John installed crown molding throughout the first floor and master bedroom of my Baltimore rowhome. He also installed some missing sections of base molding and improved the appearance of the transitions from drywall to an exposed brick wall. John was well priced, worked quickly, and responded nearly immediately to all communications. I would highly recommend John and will likely have him do additional handyman and carpentry work in the future.

The team was on time and worked everyday until the job was done. The 2 workers he had working with him work as hard as I would to complete the job. When the job was finished everything was perfect and the only thing I had to remind to do when they were done was to collect the final payment I owed him. The team extended my bedroom and turned into a master bedroom by knocking down a wall and adding a walk in closet. It turned out perfect and I have no complaints. The team did an awesome job

Joel responded quickly to my request for a quote to paint the master bedroom and master bathroom. Since we were flexible with timing, he communicated often regarding his availability and anticipated start date. We were pleased with finished walls and feel that we got what we were expecting for a very reasonable rate.

Great work, fair prices, professional service! What a great experience! I had a leak in my rubber roof. They showed up for the estimate and work promptly and even when running a few minutes late, I was notified. While they were on the roof, they didn't just do the job, they looked for any other issues and made recommendations. I have already had them clean the gutters, do maintenance on my shingle roof and a small tile repair project. I will definitely use them again.

We had old wallpaper removed, nail holes repaired, ceilings and walls painted. The workmanship was excellent! The job took a tad longer than expected, however, the job was finished in a reasonable amount of time.

Jim was timely and dependable. He was more than willing to share not only his observations, but also his opinion / recommendation. His written report was thorough and definitely an asset as we prepare for the 'walk through' with the builder.

Mr. Guevara was responsive, efficient and did an excellent job with repairing my cabinet and mounting it back up against the wall! He ensured that my cabinet opened and closed properly and that it was secured flesh to the basement wall. He also made sure the door stopper secured to the bottom of the cabinet and leveled my cabinet too. I will definitely use him again for more work needed in my basement and refer him to family and friends! Thank you Mr. Guevara for your services!!!!

Frank was fast and responsive. He came out and assessed what needed to be done, offered suggestions, and provided an honest opinion on additional home projects I wanted done. The water leak that left a hole in my kitchen wall was fixed in a timely manner (Frank's team, primarily Carlos, was awesome) and the shelf that was installed at Franks' suggestion looks amazing. I also had a window that needed to be repaired and you would never know that it had an issue. I've almost forgotten! Overall, I had a great experience with A&F Construction Services and will definitely call them in the future.

The worst part about the projects we had completed with Angel are that they're over, so we don't get to see Angel on a daily basis any more. Over the span of the last several months Angel and his team have completed several projects for us, and every one has been done with extreme focus on doing things the right way and making sure we're happy with the outcome. Angel really can do it all, from plumbing to electrical to carpentry to drywall and beyond. There's nothing we've asked of him that he's not been able to excel at. The projects he's completed for us include: 1) Rewiring and replumbing our entire basement which was a mess of 60 years worth of "DIY" jobs gone wrong and old wiring that needed to be replaced. He called out a plumbing issue he saw (corroded pipes that water would fall from if they were tapped), which we hadn't originally asked him to do because we didn't know it was a problem. He quickly replaced all of the main lines coming into the house and those feeding into the first floor. 2) Replaced 6 basement windows for us that had been causing water issues. He and his team had to repair and replace a great deal of damaged concrete and framing to get the new windows in, and I can't even begin to tell you how much of a difference it's made in our basement. We had actually consulted with two other "window installers" about the job, and they both came in with ridiculous costs, and weren't even going to address the issues we raised to them. Like I said, Angel focuses on getting everything done right. 3) Our freaking awesome kitchen remodel!!! Angel and his team demoed our old kitchen, moved all of our gas, plumbing, and electrical lines (and installed new ones), moved a load baring wall, installed new flooring, built and installed our cabinets, and installed our appliances. The result is absolutely everything I dreamed. If you're looking for someone to help out with some small tasks around the house, or to do major construction for you, I simply could not recommend Angel more highly. He's honest, trustworthy, kind, and extremely talented at his trades.

John Cobb, The Master's Finish, replaced our plaster ceiling that had partially fallen down. He took the rest of it down, replaced it with drywall and painted it. He also repaired large cracks in two plaster walls and painted the entire room. It looks terrific! John is such a pleasure to work with. He has a very nice nature, shows up when he says he will, cleans up the areas completely, and sticks to the budget. I could not be happier and will have him repair more plaster for us in the near future. His painting work was exceptional as well.

I would have to rate this company & Eric as excellent. It is so difficult these days, to get companies to meet your expectations, let alone meet them but GS Flook did just that. This cabinet build was really a small project so I wasn't sure GSF would even be interested. But Eric came to the house, we discussed what I wanted in a design, & he even worked with me on material choices, to get the cost in line. The finished cabinet is beautiful, exactly what I wanted, taking an empty wall, filling the space & giving us much needed storage. Hope we can work together again, Thank you Gene Bell Camp Hill, PA

Mr. Marshall does commercial and residential jobs. I have utilized Mr. Marshall’s services for many projects including plumbing, carpentry, and heat pump problems. In my kitchen he has installed a dishwasher, stove, new sink and faucet, a water filter system, a vinyl floor and also painted and caulked the walls. He also replaced two water damaged doors with new handmade cabinet doors that matched the existing doors perfectly. In my bathroom he installed a new vanity, faucet, toilet, medicine cabinet, custom shelving, a shower rod, and done repairs to the tub and shower faucet. Other jobs he has done for me include installing a central vac which I love, replaced and relocated my water heater to a more suitable location in my home, completed a beautiful tile job in my entry way and deck repair. Mr. Marshall is skilled with his work and is a problem solver. He has been able to complete difficult jobs that other contractors weren’t willing or able to complete for me and also for friends who I referred him to. He is skilled at dealing with inspectors, permitting and is able to cut through the red tape involved in dealing with county organizations. As a single woman I trust him to do the work I need fairly and correctly and I have referred him to several friends who have also become repeat customers. He has done basement waterproofing, well/septic repairs, and ran gas lines for friends of mine. I highly recommend his services

Larry did a great job removing and replacing insulation in the attic! Hard working and professional. All-around handyman, he also tightened the handrail on a stairway, painted the grill on top of the AC unit, and replaced some vinyl in an overhang.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
