Mr Sosa submitted a quote after I had rang and submitted many enquiries to many contractors for work attaching new ducting to old ducting. I choose Mr Sosa because he said he would do the work today. Other contractors made undertakings later and I needed this work done to allow other works to proceed. During the day Mr Sosa made undertakings both by phone and the message system on this website he would do the work today. I waited until 10pm for him to arrive but he never did the work. From my experience I find the undertakings of doing timely results not being met. From my experience I would advise extreme caution when dealing with Mr Sosa.

Stephen did a great job cleaning out our gutters. He came as scheduled, cleaned them all out, and added elbows where needed, holding each one on with a little screw. He even cleaned the lint out of our drier vent. Before and after pictures were a great help. We had one mismatch of expectations - leaves left on the lawn (which we had just finished raking the weekend prior) when the job was done. When I called him to ask about that (ok - to complain) he came right back and put them all in one pile for us to pick up. Now that we know what to expect that won't be a problem for us in the future. All in all nice work, and we'll have him do this for us again in the future.

We hired AirSciences to remove mold in an attic space. We had to hire a contractor and get the work performed quickly, as this was required to sell our home. We did not want to just hire any one, despite the urgency of the work. One thing that stood out was the time Daryl took to educate us on mold remediation and the industry at large. He talked about types of questions to ask any mold remediation contractor, things to look for, and potential red flags. His top priority was for us to hire a contractor that met our needs and performed quality work, not necessarily to hire his company. Daryl's quote was on the higher end of the bids. We negotiated the price through changing the mold remover product. Again we stated our needs and he explained what he could do to meet our needs and maintain quality. After we compared 4 companies we decided to hire AirSciences without hesitation. Daryl is honest, reliable, provides top notch customer service and high quality work. He took time to inspect the attic in depth and identify the severity and root of the problem. He met our tight time line. His team installed vents to resolve the root of the problem as well as re-mediate the mold. The majority of the other bids only addressed resolving the mold with less optimal products, without addressing the root problem, and with much shorter warranties. AirSciences warranty is for 10 years and stays with the property, regardless of who owns the house. The other companies warranties were in the 2-5 year range. I highly recommend AirSciences and would hire them again without hesitation.

We recently bought a condo and had to replace the steam boiler because it was old, inefficient and did not heat all the radiators in the house. Out of the three plumbers who contacted us after leaving our details on Thumbtack, we chose Real Deal plumbing for the following reasons. 1) Real is ALWAYS on time. He will ring your doorbell at 6:59 for a 7:00 appointment. He will also call to let you know that he is 5 minutes away. 2) Real is very professional. He was knowledge about all aspects of the job and had great suggestions. He was not pushy and was upfront about everything he was going to do. 3) Real was the only one who ALWAYS pulled permits for the job by default. Neither of the other plumbers wanted the pull permits, but Real pulled gas and plumbing permits and had an inspector from the city checkout the installation two days later. 4) Real sent me a detailed estimate that included his license #, insurance information, cost of the boiler and cost of everything else (labor, materials, permits, new vents for all radiators, travel etc). 5) After Real was done there was no evidence he was ever in our basement except for the new steam boiler. He left the basement cleaner than he found it. 6) Real's quote was the lowest. Real is a talented plumber, a true professional and an overall nice guy. I've never had such a pleasant experience dealing with any contractor/plumber before. I intend to use him to service my new boiler every year and for all other plumbing needs. I highly recommend Real for all your plumbing needs.

We just received the Superior team, and we couldn’t be happier with their services! Our little house has 19 vents, two of which were broken. They cleaned and fixed everything quickly and efficiently. The team members were kind and very professional. I’m surprised they survived the dust buildup in my house. I highly recommend their services, and will be hiring them again in the future.

Great job! This guys know what they do. The technician took the time to explain things before getting to work. Then they cleaned every single vent in my house and got pretty much debris out of my vents. The vents are now visibly cleaner and I’ve got no more dust on furniture. Use these guys! I recommend fully.

rond company is simply a fantastic company, providing awesome service. Silas and his team replaced my old oil furnace and electric water heater with a new gas system and has water heater. His team also installed all the duct work for the new system, along with replacing all of my old copper water piping with Pex pipe to future proof the house against potential damage from freezing pipes. Last but not least, he also ran a gas line to my rear deck so I could cook on my natural gas grill without the need for propane tanks!!! The work done was absolutely fantastic and his team is well trained and very personable. He also made sure to communicate timely updates for everything going on with the work. All in all, a fantastic plumber with fair and honest pricing. He is now the family plumber!!

I needed my duct work cleaned after a restoration project. I had trouble finding someone, even after seeking recommendations from friends. I resorted to Google and found Thumbtack, which I had never heard of before. I received four quotes in short order, with Richmond's being the first and cheapest. Some of the other companies had more reviews, but most of them seemed unauthentic. I selected Richmond and made the appointment through email. Mike showed up at the exact time he said he would, was neat, polite and professional. He had all of the appropriate equipment and used protector plates to protect the paint in doorways, etc. Frankly, I rolled the dice with Thumbtack, but I couldn't be happier with the process as well as Richmond Restoration's work. We had Wickson's HVAC an American Standard air handler for out 3500 sqf house. The owner Jeremy got us a great price on the handler and his quote for installation was just as competitive, if not better than the other bids we got. Install was fast and efficient, we barely noticed he was there! In two weeks we had a fully ducted system with a brand new air handler. I would definitely recommend using Wickson's HVAC!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How often should you get your air ducts cleaned?

How often you should clean your air ducts depends on your situation. If you or someone in the home has asthma or is acutely allergic to certain airborne materials or pollen, regular duct cleaning may be helpful. The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t have an official position on the necessity of air duct cleaning unless the ducts have been contaminated by rodents, insects or mold, or you are aware of particles blowing out through the vents. The EPA recommends you have your air ducts cleaned on an as-needed basis. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) suggests having air ducts cleaned every three to five years.

Be cautious with companies that offer “whole house air duct cleaning,” urges the NADCA. The company may be using unscrupulous tactics to upsell you once they get started. Before any work begins, always clarify in writing what the job entails and what the cost will be. To protect yourself against fraud, read customer reviews and verify that your HVAC cleaning service has applicable licenses and certifications.

Do you need to clean your air ducts?

Air duct cleaning is done by heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) professionals. The pros use industrial-strength, truck-mounted vacuums and powerful brushes and hoses to clean inside the metal ducts that make up your forced air heating and cooling system. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends duct cleaning if there is “substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface ducts, ducts that are infested with vermin such as rodents or insects, or ducts that are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles are actually released into the home from your supply registers.”

You should also have air ducts cleaned after recent water contamination or water damage to prevent mold; after renovations or remodeling to ensure debris and dust didn’t settle in the vents and ducts; if you are having problems with allergies or asthma; or when you are moving into a newly purchased home, especially if the previous owners smoked or had pets. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends getting your air ducts cleaned every three to five years, or every two to three years in regions where homeowners use their air conditioning and heater for many months of the year, while the EPA suggests homeowners have duct cleaning done as needed.

How long does it take to get your ducts cleaned?

The amount of time air duct cleaning takes can depend on how extensive your duct system is, how old your air ducts are, and whether they have ever been cleaned. On average, expect a standard size home (between 2,000 and 3,000 square feet) to take 2-5 hours for one to two technicians to clean. Here are the proper protocol and equipment you should expect from a professional duct cleaning service, as recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency:

  • All doors and access ports opened to ensure the entire duct system is inspected and cleaned.
  • Thorough system inspection prior to cleaning to identify possible asbestos-containing materials. If asbestos is present, specially trained and equipped contractors must do the removal.
  • Use of approved vacuum equipment that exhausts particles outside of your house. If the vacuum exhausts inside your home, it must be HEPA equipment.
  • Furnishings and carpet covered and protected.
  • Soft-bristled brushes only on fiberglass duct board and sheet metal ducts internally lined with fiberglass.
  • Ductwork properly protected.
  • Adherence to guidelines and practices set down by the National Air Duct Cleaners Association.

How much does it cost to replace air ducts in a house?

If your air ducts have been damaged, you’ll need to replace them. The national average air duct replacement cost is $150-$280, which may not include materials. Factors such as duct material, labor, location of ducts and linear feet of ductwork will all affect your final costs. Labor costs will vary based on how accessible the ducts are and what material your ducts are made of. The least expensive duct material is a flexible, non-metallic ducting that costs approximately $1-$2 per linear foot. Flexible aluminum is generally more expensive and stronger than non-metallic ducting. Stainless steel ducting is the strongest, the least flexible (meaning installing it typically has higher labor rates), and usually the most expensive. An average price for air duct replacement could range between $35 and $55 per linear foot, including basic materials and labor. A typical single-family home has 6-10 duct runs; replacing or installing one duct run could average $150-$250 for labor.

How much does it cost to have your air ducts cleaned?

If you’re concerned about dust, allergens or mold, it may be time to have your air ducts cleaned. The national average cost for air duct cleaning ranges from $190 to $250. Air duct cleaning costs will vary based on a number of factors such as your location in the country, the age and condition of your air ducts, the number of linear feet to be cleaned, and any repairs your ducts may need. HVAC cleaning companies should clearly outline what is included in their services and at what rate, so always make sure you understand and have a written agreement before work begins. Here are some examples of average air duct cleaning costs:

  • Tiered pricing for different levels of service:
    • Standard cleaning: $100, which may include truck-mounted industrial vacuums, high-pressure air wands and air snakes to clean all supply and return vents, branch lines, and main trunk lines.
    • Advanced cleaning: $200, which may include standard cleaning services, plus rotobrush or viper clean sweep in the main trunk lines.
    • Ultimate cleaning: $400, which may include advanced cleaning, plus insertion of a viper microline into all vents to force debris down the branch lines and into the main trunk lines, to be handled by the viper clean sweep. Typically, all ductwork surface is contacted, before-and-after photos are provided, and the furnace is cleaned.
  • A flat rate for unlimited vents: $289.
  • Additional fees for larger houses: $20 for each additional 500 square feet over 2,500.
