We needed paint colors for an entire older house we just moved our family into. I have 2 kids and work full time so my time is extremely limited. I can not express the value I found in hiring Laura. Her knowledge, professionalism and expertise were incredible. She honed in on my personal style, likes and dislikes and found colors to match the unique character of hour house. It was worth every penny and and saved me an indescribable amount of time and money trying to pick out colors, then re-paint when they didn't look right. I would hire Laura again in a heartbeat and would recommend her to anyone needing an interior designer. We will work with her again when it is time to redo our kitchen and bathroom.

Elizabeth came to my home for a consultation for rearranging things in my home as I approach the "empty nest" and wish to make my home more focused on myself, rather than teenagers. I had never hired an interior designer before and was a bit nervous. Elizabeth immediately made me feel comfortable, and was both very professional, as well as personable, She was able to get a good sense of my lifestyle, and kept her suggestions very well tailored to my needs and my budget, even considering my pets in her design plan. She gave me great ideas to make use of things I already had in my home with some slight changes, to create new space suited to what I am looking for. Her consultation turned this project into something that I look forward to as easy, affordable, and fun!! and I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for an interior designer.

Kim helped me design our open family room/dining room/eat in kitchen and paint colors for the entire first floor of our 1960's home during renovations. She provided me with multiple different layouts for furniture placement and options for keeping existing furniture, new colors for paint for the newly open floor plan, as well as electrical placement, and suggestions to improve the overall use of the space. She was very mindful to stay in budget, and her consultations were incredibly helpful to figure out exactly how to best use the new space with our 4 young children. I definitely recommend Brick + Beam for design and color planning.

Vicki is the best of the best. We have utilized interior designers before, all with good results, but Vicki is in a class by herself. Her personality, tireless worth ethic, eye for detail, wonderful sense of taste, and her commitment to complete the project that matches your vision to the highest of expectations are all core values of both her personal and professional principles. Vicki gets our highest of recommendations.

We hired Juliana, owner of Creative Interiors, on the recommendation from a person that we worked with. This person contracted with Juliana to redecorate the bedroom and living room in their home. They were thrilled with the results, and commented that Juliana did an exceptionally great job. When we renovated our home, Juliana and I went shopping for fabrics for new drapes for the house; new bed comforters; and fabrics for sofas and chairs that we wanted recovered. She is a wealth of information about decorating, and she brought us to shops that we would not have been familiar with without Juliana's help. We also went to an art gallery with her, and we bought a couple of prints and had them framed. Juliana was amazing with the help she gave us choosing frames that looked the best with the prints we chose. She put 100% into helping us redecorate our house. She came to our house and helped us hang the framed prints , explaining the lighting in the rooms and the pros and cons of putting the prints on certain walls. The results were beautiful because of Juliana. Another thing that we really appreciated about her is that she taught us so much about decorating. She explained everything to us as we shopped. No matter how many questions we had, Juliana always had the answers. Juliana is a kind and caring person. She is very easy to work with. She has unending amounts of patience, and accommodated all of our needs. Juliana never cancelled an appointment with us, she was always on time, and her help was invaluable. The characteristic in Juliana that we appreciate so much is her honesty. She never tried to persuade us to purchase anything we did not like. She insisted that we make the final decisions on all purchases. Juliana's words to us were: "At the end of the day, you live in the house and you have to be happy with it." We were happy when it was completed and we still are grateful that we met and worked with Creative Interiors.

recently purchased a high rise condo downtown in the city of Boston. Knowing nothing of the interior design world, I decided I needed help. I turned to Pam and explained that I wanted a contemporary look. Pam picked out a three tone color scheme for the living room walls, a chic tile backsplash for the kitchen and artwork throughout the condo. Everyone who visits my home compliments me on the decorating…but I probably shouldn’t take ALL the credit. Thanks Pam!!!!——Matt P.

Teresa assisted my wife Tracey and I with our 1st floor renovation which included a kitchen, bathroom, laundry room, and family room. Her ability to listen, present us multiple options for each and every decision, and then collaborate on making the best decision for our family was impressive and made the design process very enjoyable. Teresa also worked very closely with our contractor and took great care in making sure the final outcome was exactly how she and we envisioned it. We are already planning on working with Teresa again on multiple future projects!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
