I had a WONDERFUL experience working with DJ Mark and Party Makers. I was a real difficult client! I insisted on making the play list and not straying from it. Mark totally listened to me but used his creativity in mixing the tunes. Now that I know him, I'd be a lot more flexible. Mark has great taste in music! I asked him not to speak much, which he followed. But when he spoke, he was funny! His equipment was great, he was extremely professional. Mark arrived on time, set up quickly, broke down quickly. Consummate professional. My husband has another July 4th birthday next year, I'd LOVE to hire DJ Mark again!!! I've received SO MANY compliments on the DJ from my guests. Everyone asked where I found him! Thank you Thumbtack!!!

We feel so very lucky to have Kris's talents available to us. Where else could you find someone who has toured and played with well-known drummers and bands so close to home? Our son has taken his playing to the next level with Kris and learned new skills and gotten familiar with the different styles of drumming. Kris also passes along his extensive technical knowledge so that students learn to maintain their sets themselves. Besides being a true professional, Kris is a wonderful person whose teaching style and over-all personality makes learning from him both fun and enjoyable. He loves what he does and it shows!

I'm an adult student. David has been working with me since 2009. He's amazing. He has me playing songs I never thought I'd be able to play. He has a real knack for getting to the heart of the matter when it comes to musical expression on the guitar. He's great. Hire him!

I have been taking advance piano lessons from Christie for about five years. I had completed a music education program before meeting Christie and then had a long break from music. Christie took my piano playing from a hobby to a profession. She had challenged and inspired me in many ways - from believing I could learn and perform advanced classical pieces to letting me perform with a professional jazz band. Christie motivated me to learn musical theory on a deeper level, prepare for rigorous Royal Conservatory examinations, explore voice lessons, and most importantly inspired me to teach music as well. It was Christie's belief in my abilities that helped me become an educator myself. I am now teaching piano to almost 30 students, and find that I often think of "how Christie would do this" when I teach. She is an inspiration.

In my role at Berklee College of Music, I see/hear a lot of music. I happened to check out The New Review this week -- this band is the straight-up, no B.S., *real deal,* hands down. Nine-piece mad-tight band. Great musicians and excellent vocalists making a completely fun atmosphere. Nothing at all against DJs, but there's something hella-special about singers and players who love what they're doing to make your body move, and this band does it like few others. They packed the place, and even people with too little room to dance couldn't help bopping their heads. If you're looking for a band that feels the joy of playing and gives it to a whole crowd, The New Review is it. Absolutely "pure funk, uncut funk, the bomb."

Felix is a great guitar instructor! He has the knowledge, skills, and sensitivity to teach students of all ages and levels. Personable and enthusiastic, Felix communicates concepts and techniques very well. He is an amazing and inspiring guitarist who teaches the fundamentals while, at the same time, encourages exploration and personal expression. I have been taking private lessons from Felix for a number of years and I know first-hand of his ability and willingness to provide exceptional instruction in a wide range of musical styles and genres tailored to the individual student’s interest. In my case, due to having an eclectic musical taste, Felix tutors me in various categories which include: folk, blues, jazz, country, bluegrass, reggae, both classic and contemporary rock, and even some classical. I learn from him using both acoustic and electric guitar. Very soon after first taking lessons from Felix he began teaching me soloing techniques right alongside strumming rhythms. Felix, a Berklee School of Music alum, is an incredibly talented and passionate guitarist held in high regard among his peers. He is a natural teacher capable of effectively instructing the beginner, intermediate, and advanced level student in equal measure. With his vast knowledge Felix offers informed instruction on reading and transcribing music, theory, and composition for those students who wish to delve that deep in their study. Felix is patient, thorough, and encouraging in his teaching approach. As a long-term pupil of Felix’ I give him my highest recommendation.

My son and I have been taking lessons with Lynn for 5 or 6 years now. She is very patient with younger students (& older students having "senior moments"). She is also flexible in her lessons in that if we want to work on theory, jazz, rock, blues, she will cater to our requests.

After taking piano lessons from a traditional piano teacher for 6 years, I needed a change. Steve was the perfect choice. He played at a local piano bar at the time, and I wanted to hone my skills so I could play in bands, too. I assumed he would teach me the ins and outs of chords and then send me off to conquer the music scene, but it turned out he had a real mastery of musical theory, and he held it to a very high importance. He began each of our lessons with music theory - all the basics that make a solid foundation for any musician. Then, he introduced a new concept to something I had been doing all along. He gave me sheet music to learn - tough teaching songs - then after a time, began blocking my view of my hands with paper while playing. Eventually, he'd block my hands and take away the music, teaching me a very important part of playing anything in front of people. You have to know the music inside and out. You can't rely on the sheets in front of you. That's the only way you can truly immerse yourself in the song and let your fingers do the playing. His fees were reasonable and the time was very well-spent. You have to do the work between lessons to get the most out of them. Steve has a true mastery of live performance on every level, and it would behoove any musician, young or old, beginner or skilled, to spend a year in his teaching. We can all benefit from it. I certainly did. I've been in various bands, ever since, and I haven't looked back except to remember who helped me get here.

As a composer, collaborating with Dennis Shafer continues to be a great opportunity to work with an incredibly well-rounded, sophisticated, and poetic musician. After soliciting my musical intentions, such an impeccably pictorial and wonderfully sincere performance of my music could only have arisen from someone so wholly invested not only in his craft, but in a greater concept of what music can mean. I am eager to be again composing music for Dennis to perform. In the spirit of his teaching philosophy, he’s opened my eyes to the thrill of collaborative work. Composers can be recluses, and I needed that eye-opener. His availability, willingness, and capacity to clarify the challenges of writing well for the saxophone makes me a better composer. A chance to work or study with Dennis in any capacity should not be passed up. He is a renaissance man and a worldbeater.

I picked Steve to give lessons to my 14-year-old daughter after having a quick chat with him. He informed me that he instructs differently depending on what the student wants to achieve which I liked since it shows a student focus approach. Since my daughter has never played before, I was nervous about picking someone off of the internet but it has been a very good experience. I do not have any music ability so I can only review Steve as a parent of a student. Steve has a great demeanor which is perfect for working with kids. He is very encouraging and appears to very knowledgeable. He uses his experience and knowledge of bands and drummers as well as song bites as examples which easily keeps my daughter’s attention. I have learned a lot just by listening in. By the second class, he had my daughter playing along with a Beetles song while explaining how to keep tempo and to make the different drumming sounds which she really enjoyed. Steve is also very good at writing down homework assignments that she understands and can easily follow which I like. I have not yet invested in a drum set at home until my daughter shows a long-term commitment and this is not just another fad. Steve has her practicing nightly using the pillows which is working out so far. However, given how well this is going, I can see a drum set in the not too distant future. This is in no small part due to Steve and his efforts.

Java Jive is the band you MUST hire for your wedding or other event. They are extremely professional and incredibly easy to deal with - available quickly and easily by phone and email. Don was a pleasure to work with, and his experience shows through his careful attention to detail in how you want your event to go. The band is AMAZING, and your guests will want to dance and do anything except sit down!! Their repertoire is impressively extensive, and they can learn anything. We absolutely loved them at our wedding, as did our guests, young and old. We had the pleasure of hearing them perform and two prior non-wedding events, and every time, guests have left saying, "wow that band was amazing!" You simply must hire them - they did a fantastic job!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

    • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
    • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
    • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
