How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire an electrician when social distancing?

If you decide to hire an electrician, choose virtual platforms for consultations like calling or video chats. Avoid any physical contact with the electrician, wave instead of shaking hands, stay 6 feet away, sanitize shared surfaces and use digital payment apps instead of cash.

Can I use digital payments to pay for electrical and wiring repair?

These days, many electricians will accept digital payments for electrical work and wiring repair instead of traditional cash or check. The COVID-19 pandemic has helped speed up the adoption of platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and others as a means of complying with social distancing guidelines.

As you search for electricians online, ask whether they’ll accept digital payment and set up a strategy for staying safe.

I'm very satisfied with the job that quality electric did for me. He installed a nema 14-50 outlet to charge my tesla. He even came back to make sure that the plug and everything fit well in the outlet that he installed! Will definitely use again for any electrician needs that I have and recommend him to anyone else looking for electrician work

Great electrician, communicated promptly, looked at job and quoted what it would be, he was affordable and did the work within an hour. Would hire again.

I was in need of an electrician due to lights, circuit breaker tripping. Mr. Ben was responsive spent a great amount of time evaluating the situation, very knowledgeable and informed me of my options in a way that was understandable and made sense. He will return to complete work needed and agreed on. I was impressed. Highly recommended.

Jake is a very polite guy, and professiona tool. I look forward to working with him on all of my future projects. He knows his job, he takes the time to explain to you about what he's doing. If he discovered any issue, he will tell you what's he going to do to fix. I can say that he is highly reliable. If you are looking for an honest electrician to work for you, hire Jake.

Franco is the only electrician who responded to my work request. He was very quick to respond and despite of the complex work he took the job. Scheduling with me was somewhat a work as well due to condo management restrictions but he was very flexible. It’s a difficult work and he did an excellent job. Made sure the wiring are placed perfectly and holes are patched really well. I already have new projects in line for him once my renovation is complete. You won’t regret having him work for you. Five stars!

Edison is the best person I have ever worked with. We have done multiple renovations to our house so have worked with a lot of people and he was the BEST. Only complaint is I wish he did more than electric and could have done the whole renovation because he was the only person I liked working with! You will not be disappointed. He is the hardest worker and so kind and trustworthy. I would give 10 stars if I could! I wish I found him sooner because I have wasted so much time and money with other electricians.

Left after 1.5 hours of starting the job. Truck wouldn’t make it up the driveway and went over the curb. Stated there was an emergency and would reschedule but never reached back out. Would not recommend. Also upon, consulting with another Electrican found out he was overcharging for recessed ceiling lighting (and I already had the holes in the ceiling from previous lights and also electricity and switching). Wanted $150 a light and the electrician I ended up finding on hood not only used a better company recessed lighting instead of the cheap one rayc was using was $75 cheaper PER LIGHT! Do you research !

Needed a few light switches and an outlet wired and installed in a 200 year old house with plaster and lath walls. Not a huge job but not a simple one either. Edison responded within 10 minutes of my request, was at my house giving me a quote within an hour and finished the work over the next two hours. His rates are very reasonable and less than I expected to pay. He was up front about cost and difficulty, he was quick to offer solutions and suggestions well within my budget and his initial quote, and ultimately explained his work in a straightforward way. He’s also very friendly and punctual, kept the work area clean and was careful and considerate of my space. The experience couldn’t have gone better. I absolutely will contact him again for future electrician needs.
