"After many years in commercial real estate, I embarked on a career of passion.
I returned to university, completed a degree in design and never looked back. I have been fortunate to work with lovely residential clients, primarily in the kitchen/bath space as I have a knack for space planning and functionality.
I also supply many vendors in town with paint consultations. I value simplicity, practicality, and elegance. I find most of my clients want simple elegance over clutter. I have also been fortunate to have worked on commercial office installations, custom furniture building, and historic renovations and will begin working on the renovation of a cotton mill into apartments in the near future.
All of this translates into a good understanding of the products available, the vendors who provide quality at substantial savings, and installers that are quality oriented.
The difference in hiring a designer instead of a decorator or DYI is in the absolute attention to detail and attention to functionality and durability.
I love problem solving for functionality and movement. So many spaces are not designed for actual usage. Function is first. Then I concentrate on the aesthetics.
I love when my clients say, "How did you think of or see that?" It's experience, listening to the words and the habits of the client and a good understanding of the products available.
While space is almost intuitive to me, I truly enjoy color. I love color consulting to paint companies and builders, especially when they go from "Are you sure?" to "I cannot believe this!"
Working in this arena extensively, I have a wide palette of go-to colors that I can put on walls/ceilings/floors and know they will present beautifully.
My favorite client moment thus far was a simple color consult with a couple that had just returned from a 19-year stint in Italy. We spend the better part of a day picking colors of Sienna and Tuscany. The choices were bold and vibrant, even a stretch for my safe zone.
When the painter finished, the couple threw a cocktail party for the entire neighborhood to show their masterpiece. When I walked in, I was utterly speechless. The client greeted me with a hug and tears in her eyes. Together, we had made her builder house her true home."
