Upon arriving at my mother's house on a Saturday I was alarmed to see the spigot on the outside front was "spewing" water. My mom has been widowed & living alone in her home for more than 15 years. She's never been satisfied with the different odd repairs and exterior painting jobs she's hired thru word of mouth & was none too excited to consider finding a plumber. Sunday mornin I checked the spigot and the amount of water flowing was alarming so I typed "plumbers in Charleston, SC" into my browser bar and of course found many names, some with reviews thru yellow pages, Google etc. Then there was 3 responses thru thumbtack.com. I read each and every review to my mom with virtually no response from her. There was a tremendous amount of water being wasted thru that spigot. Monday mornin I took the biggest cooking pot in her house, a ginormous crab pot holds at least 4 gallons. I placed it under the spigot at 8:00am & @9:00am took pix and videos of the overflowing pot. It was unusually cold in Charleston that day. After showing her the pix I voiced that this is an emergency & gave her my opinion of exactly who I thought she should hire, which was Robert Jenkins, one of the thumbtack.com responders. I liked that he had (18) 5 star reviews & felt his response showed great understanding and the quote, though not the least expensive, was most realistic. I emailed Robert at 11:00am & he called me within 10 minutes. After working in Mt Pleasant all day, Robert rushed over arriving about 4:00pm. He located and turned the water off at the main then carefully removed the very old existing spigot. "I'll be back in 10-20 minutes" he told me. Literally 10 minutes later he was back with a new spigot. Mom's neighbor had wondered over and I was impressed how young Robert was able to do his work while pleasantly conversing with the 75 year man. I consider the job done expertly, by a very polite, respectful young man. I felt the price was fair.

I can't say enough good things about this company. We lost our 18 year old water heater and wanted to upgrade to a tankless model, and Wesley absolutely went above and beyond to help us make it happen. He came out within a few hours of our request, fully explained our options, and stayed until all of our questions were completely answered and made sure we made an informed decision. He was personally responsive to all of my phone calls. Three days after the initial request, our new water heater is installed and working perfectly. He was professional, worked efficiently, and cleaned up after he was done. He absolutely treated our repair like I'm sure he would his own home. Thank you again from our entire family. We will, without a doubt, be using your company again for future work and can wholeheartedly recommend your services.

I highly recommend Michael because he completes plumbing jobs at a fair and reasonable price. He just installed my bathroom sink and both toilets. ( I am a repeat customer.) In addition, he has installed my hot water heater, kitchen sink, dishwasher, and water line for my ice maker. I have been very pleased anytime I have used his plumbing service. Dennis and his crew responded quickly (fully licensed, insured and bonded) to our needs twice, they installed a sump pump, moved plumbing for sink and 2 runoff pipes, one from under house to ditch and another from water pump-filter well to forest. They also responded quickly to fix a backed up septic problem, and fixed the water heater pressure tank left off by the previous plumber. We will definitely use them again.

This company is top notch from beginning (quote) to end (my beautiful new tankless water heater). I had a 1998 (yikes!) gas hot water heater that needed to be replaced. John thoroughly inspected the situation, and even though I had complications with my existing gas line, he was able to offer me a very creative option that saved me greatly! They worked me into their schedule quickly and the installation crew was professional and meticulous. Highly recommended!

I hired Kent to check my tankless water heater as it was taking a long time for the water to travel upstairs. He was in the area so stopped by and checked it the same day. His diagnosis was accurate and he was very competent and knowledgeable. I would definitely hire him again.

Tom is great! I bought a house just over a year ago. He has basically redone my house. He has always been friendly, on-time, cost conscious with materials, and has competitive prices for a professional of his experience. I have always felt safe around him and am comfortable with him in my house even if I can't be there. I would recommend him to anyone! If you are interested in the work he has done for me, see below. Electrical: all fixtures, replaced all outlets and switches, installed additional outlets and cable jacks, rerouted switches, garage door opener. Walls/Ceilings: scraped popcorn and refinished ceilings, major wallpaper removal, repaired holes (big) in walls and ceiling, retaped and finished broken seams, fresh paint throughout (the best painting I have ever seen). Flooring: removed carpet, installed hardwoods, installed travertine tile, repaired subfloor water damage. Plumbing: replaced various water lines, replaced broken water heater, installed new toilets. Misc: removed all old appliances and installed new appliances including a built in microwave, repaired rotted wood on exterior trim, painted exterior door/trim, pressure washed driveway, trimmed tree limbs back from house, installed new towel bars/tp holders, removed plate mirrors and installed medicine cabinets, refinished some cabinets, changed all the cabinet hardware, replaced all door hinges and knobs. Just too many little miscellaneous things to mention!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

When is it time to replace a water heater?

Although regular water heater maintenance and water heater repair may extend the life of your hot water heater, it won’t last forever. Most water heaters have a life expectancy of about 10 years. Many water heaters need to be replaced when they’re 8-12 years old — that’s when they start to show signs of fatal wear, such as leaking around the base of the tank. A water heater should be replaced when it fails to sufficiently heat water for the home; if your heater is operating erratically, check first for a blown fuse or a tripped breaker to make sure an electrical issue isn’t causing the problem. Another time to replace a water heater is when you want to upgrade to either a larger model or a more energy-efficient one.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

Who can fix a water heater?

When a water heater stops running effectively, it’s best to hire a water heater repair professional to troubleshoot the problem. Whether it’s a plumbing company that offers water heater repair services or a provider specializing in water heater repair and maintenance, most repair companies offer same-day service as well as weekend and after-hours emergency calls. Usually, water heater repair professionals are experts in both electric and gas systems, as well as tank and tankless heaters, and can repair any kind of unit.

Why is my hot water not working?

The most common complaint among homeowners is that their hot water isn’t working — and the water heater is generally the culprit. Typically, it isn’t making the water as hot as you’d like it to be. When the water isn’t hot enough — or isn’t hot at all — run through this troubleshooting checklist for basic water heater repair tasks:

  • Make sure the power is connected to the heater, then reset the thermostat.
  • If it’s a gas water heater, make sure the pilot light is lit.
  • Raise the temperature setting on the thermostat.

If these stops don’t lead to hot water, it’s time to either check the heating element in an electric water heater or the burner unit and gas control valve in a gas-powered heater. A water heater repair and maintenance company can handle these repair jobs. However, if your hot water heater is eight years or older, it may be time to replace the water heater instead of repairing it.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
