Lee was on time and charged much less for mounting my TV than past contractors and free quotes that I received. He was a joy to talk with and taught me a few things while he was here. Would definitely contact him again for future AV work.

Brentt and his team did an exceptional job on our new deck. My wife and I could not be more pleased with every aspect of the project. Brentt made it a point to discuss with us every detail through the process and handled the deck like it was his own. By far the best contractor we have ever worked with and I would highly recommend them.

I met with 7 different local contractors to remodel our home in Charleston and no one even came close. These guys work well together and are EXTREMELY meticulous. Not only did they give me the best quote, they started the project the very next day! I HIGHLY recommend this crew without any reservation. These guys are passionate about what they do and it translates directly into the quality of their work.

I hired Shawn to do my bathroom remodel which was a complete gut job. It was a detailed project that took quite a bit of time due to extenuating circumstances. Overall Shawn did a superb job from start to finish. He planned, organized and executed in a flawless manner. He always went the extra mile and was always available to help. His attention to detail was beyond reproach. He is a meticulous craftsman who understands what customers expect, and he delivers on those expectations. I was so impressed with his work that I also hired him to do my kitchen backsplash. Once again, Shawn exceeded expectations by going above and beyond what your typical contractor would do. Five stars are not enough to characterize him.. Shawn’s work deserves a 10. He will ensure that as a customer you get what you pay for. I would never hire anyone else to do this kind of work. Thank you Shawn we couldn’t be happier with our kitchen and Bathroom transformation. We truely llove what you did for us.

First of all this was a big project, it is a 24x14ft screened in porch and another 24x10ft of decking. The whole construction is connected to our house. We had several contractors looking at the job and went through multiple architectural alternatives. Josh contacted me very quickly after my post and we went through a transparent and fair design discussion and negotiation phase. I liked the transparency where Josh showed me a list of all materials (broken down to the nuts and bolts) and labor. We decided to work with Josh and Kevin and do not regret it! Obviously this was a huge project for us and for them and we could not cover all items upfront, so it took longer than we originally anticipated; But we also asked for changes during the project which caused additional delays. For us it was more important to have a result we really like, than to be picky about the timeline. Kevin has excellent carpentry skills and the final result is sturdy and and visually outstanding. We have only received compliments from visitors and passed on their contact details to our friends. I feel we have built up a good relationship with Kevin and Josh and I am looking forward to the next job and the next beer and conversation with "Schreinermeister Kevin" :) Enjoy the pictures of the project...

I highly recommend Scot for any drywall/paint work you may need. I had delt with 4 prior contractors, who either came out to my uncle's house or asked me for pics to review because "they could tell by the pics what the estimate would be," and NONE OF THEM BOTHERED TO CALL OR EMAIL BACK TO SAY YES OR NO! I had almost given up when I tried this site and Scot reached out to me quickly, ready to go the home, and called right back with estimates on repair of two ceilings with holes due to water damage in the old family home my recently passed father and his surviving brother grew up in. Scot was personable, knowledgeable, efficient, and reasonably priced. He did exactly as he stated he would and for the quoted price AND the quoted time. We will definitely be using him again if needed, and possibly on our own home. It still pays to do right by people and treat each other kindly. To those other "Top 10 contractors" I would highly disagree with that list and remove three of them who left me hanging without a word. God worked it out in the end because MANNERS WILL ALWAYS TAKE YOU WHERE MONEY WON'T!

Anthony and his crew worked diligently, to complete the Hurricane damage repairs on my home. He is a very busy man and I understand why. He is a very honest and hardworking individual. Once we got together and discussed what would have to be done to make the repairs he was off and running. He stayed in constant contact keeping me updated on progress of the repairs. I am glad that we found Anthony. The repairs were accomplished in a timely manner and everything looked great when they finished. I am definitely keeping his number handy in case I need any other future repairs to be done and would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a good general contractor.

I have worked with many contractors before but these guys are absolutely the best. They work hard, do a fantastic job and come up with great solutions to problems that we have run into along the way of the renovation of my 1974 house. If you want a job done well and want it done right, these are the guys to do it.

It has been a wonderful experience with Bobby McClellan and his team and we recommend him highly. There has been a complicated water leak into our living room. We ask for help from five contractors hoping to give us suggestions to what should be done. Two never got back to us and two others recommended the same solution but it didn't make sense to us. Bobby McClellan came up with a brilliant but simple idea which not only fixed our problem but added a great look to our room. Bobby and his team where professional, caring and definitely perfectionists. They came at the same time daily, worked continuously put up protective plastic to safeguard wall hangings and furniture and left every evening having the areas clean and orderly.. Not only did they do a fabulous job on our living room they fixed my kitchen sink dis-function which a previous plumber was incapable of mending.

Avi does beautiful work! He did exactly what he said he was going to do in the time he said he would do it at the price he quoted. I know we as consumers SHOULD expect nothing less; however, I have recently had a string of bad experiences with contractors, and Avi was a welcome change. Oh, and did I mention he's just an all around nice guy? Bonus! I'm looking forward to working with Avi on my next project!

We hired this company to do a whole house renovation for us. We could not be happier that we actually found a contractor that is honest and up front every step of the way. He was willing to meet with us before we purchased the property to walk through and help us design and know what our bottom dollar would be. As with any big project there were bumps in the road but Trey was the first one to call and meet with us to come up with a solution. His attention to detail, structural knowledge and honesty was refreshing. Communication is key to me and I have to say that is what impressed me the most. A lot of contractors disappear for days or weeks at a time but every phone call was answered promptly. He made sure we knew exactly what was going on every step of the way. This has been our easiest reno to date and I look forward to doing business with King Construction in the future.

Wade and his team are awesome. They really focus on customer service. Throughout our conversations the theme was "you are the customer and we want to make you happy." I heard this not only from Wade but from all of his team members. Each member of this team was a pleasure to talk to and they did good work for a good price. Any concerns were quickly remedied in a friendly manner. Finding a contractor that is easy to talk to, gets the work done on time, shows up on time, and isn't trying to rip you off is hard! Wade and his team are great. Highly recommended!

As a contracting company, I am constantly on the lookout for motivated, qualified and responsible contractors to add to my team. This can be a very dicey proposition as it is my reputation that I put on the line when I choose provide work to other contracting companies. Unique siding was referred to me by one of my major supply vendors as somebody that I could trust, did quality work and was capable of handling some substantially large jobs. I have to say that nothing in life goes exactly as planned or 100% smoothly but these guys come pretty close. The quality of the work notwithstanding, there is not a price tag you can put on peace of mind knowing that the job you worked so hard to get is in capable hands and being represented well! A four-star rating, in my experience, has only been achieved by couple of other companies I have worked with. Five stars is unrealistic in my line of work, four stars is top-notch and believable when 85% of the contractors I've done checks on would have a hard time crawling above a two or three! They never set foot on one of my projects whereas unique gained and has been for a wile. A unique circumstance if you will!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.
