Chris is a friendly and great guy to work with. He is very flexible and is an all-in-one stop for your needs! He was able to take care of all of our low-voltage wiring along with power outlets and painting in our office. He has a lot of know how and offers a very competitive price. We will definitely use Chris for future work in our office and would definitely recommend to others!

I hired Nick to come hang a TV and a floating shelf. Gary showed up Saturday morning and went straight to work. He made the wires disappear and I am thrilled with how the TV looks on the wall. I will definitely use these guys again. Corey

Cy installed wiring for under-cabinet lights in our house. He was easy to coordinate with and the wiring and lights look great! Because I wanted them all connected to one, new switch, he had to run wiring through the upper cabinets and soffit. He installed the wires in a way that aren't very noticeable. Overall I would definitely use him again!

Donnie was very thorough in originally coming out and measuring for the fence and explaining all the options and features that would/could come with the fence. Once we made the decision to move forward he was good at communicating next steps and checking up on everything to make sure things were in order. His crew was very efficient and did excellent work - they even came back to install some wire at the bottom of a section of our fence where our dog had managed to wiggle underneath. Donnie came by after the installation a couple of times to make sure everything was going well, and replaced some of the boards he wasn't happy with after walking the fence. Definitely a pleasure to work with and was happy to recommend him to neighbors and friends.

Bruce was friendly, courteous, very thorough, and did a great job. He worked in my house for 2 1/2 days, with no one home, running wire in the ceiling to install ceiling fans in the room ceiling centers, in rooms where there were no ceiling light fixtures. He repaired the Sheetrock where he had to cut into the ceiling in such good fashion that at this point I don't even need to paint. It was a pleasure doing business with someone so competent and trustworthy. I'd recommend him to anyone.

Cannot recommend Ruben enough. He showed up with a crew on time and tackled my electrical project (removing old light fixtures and fans and replacing them) very fast and efficiently. Hired him again for a much more complicated lighting install and he and his crew again were extremely efficient and professional. Will be using him for all my electrical needs in the future.

Jay was awesome with his work which shows how professional he is. I was not sure about what could be done to get a Ethernet port where it was tough to run wires. Jay was knowledgeable enough to help and suggest what would be the best and finished work in 15 mins. I would recommend him to any wiring issues.

He knows what he is doing and does it excellently with passion. Has great attention to details. Other contractors may have rushed through to get the job done and be out on New Years Eve but he worked till late on 31st Dec until he was satisfied to call it complete! We had a complex design in mind for our kitchen backsplash with a mix of natural stones, fabricated pencil tiles and small accent tiles. He suggested alternate, more appealing design idea to our own and in the end it looks great! Thanks to his great vision. I wish I could take a picture to show the excellent work he has done along with some super precision cutting of hard to cut tiles to go around the corners and power sockets. But will sure do once the grout is dry. Our tiles came in a day late, so for the scheduled time he also helped wall mount TV's in our garage and our loft - Perfect alignment and looks clean with the cables concealed. I found his communication crisp and clear. Me and my wife have lot of home improvement/re-design ideas in mind and definitely going to keep him busy this year.

I hired Rick to paint the exterior of 2,400 square foot and repair damage to external siding. I also had him paint two interior rooms, paint kitchen cabinets, stain bathroom cabinets, wire two bedrooms for over head lighting and convert stairs that were carpeted to hardwood stairs and stain. Everything looks great and Rick was very reasonable with his price. He is responsive to whatever you ask and he always professional.

Jeremy & Dennis had fixed and replaced several parts of my fence. As well as pressure wash and apply paint and sealant. They trimmed up a piece of my counter top in the kitchen, removed a cable wire from the roof and pressure washed the side of my house to remove some algae or mold (or something). The price they quoted was spot on and the job was perfect. My fence looks brand new and I couldn't be happier with all of their work. I have other projects around the house that I will need help with. Once I am ready to work on those, I will only look for help from Jeremy and Dennis. Thank you both for the outstanding job.

EXCELLENT! Requested wire fence replacement on split rail fence ASAP due to escaping dog, then cancelled when husband was going to DIY. Dog escaped again after first phase of DIY so quickly reached out to Mike who was able to provide quote and start the work within hours of receiving my call for help. He did excellent job and also provided suggestions on DIY for our concern of dog possible escaping wooden gates and some other items that came up (as my husband was in the yard working on some other tasks). He communicated up front of possible addl cost if any posts or split rail needing replacement. Stellar!!!

David put up a ranch style 3 rail fence with wiring for us. It's a difficult job because our backyard has a rather steep incline with roots here and there. He did a great job at a very reasonable price. Our dog loves it and we feel more comfortable letting him out now. Will definitely consider him for future projects and recommend him to others.

The owner (Jorge) came out promptly to give an estimate and was very professional, insightul, and knowledgeable. He was able to deliver a contract and start the work quickly. The crew showed up on the day the work was supposed to begin and on-time. The crew was polite, personable, respectful, and also very knowledgeable. For each day of the project, they showed up when they said they would and worked very hard. There were several issues they ran into during the construction due to the way the house was built. The owner was very responsive in telling me about the issues and offering solutions. Even though the issues they encountered were not their fault, they took ownership of them and gave me the best possible advice and options with miniminal cost increase. These were complex problems such as bad electical wiring but they handled the construction and the issues in a timely manner. Overall, the job went very well only because of the Jorge and his crew. He was always available to talk, as well as always courteous, informative and helpful. There is nothing more important than trust when you're handing over thousands of dollars and have people working in your home. Jorge earned my trust and confidence. I will be using him again for a project in the upcoming weeks and would highly recommend his company.

I am very happy with the work Mr. John Baile @GreatAmericanHandyman did for me. He came in after someone else didn't finish a job. He gave me fair & accurate pricing. He or his crew were on-site consistently and for consecutive days. The work was done in a timely manner. The other people I hired would disappear for weeks on end without any idea when they would return and it was such a relief not to have that type of stress with Mr. Baile. He and his team were friendly, professional and everything that they worked on for me was done well and correctly. He always touched base with me about when they were coming and going, what they were doing, how they were doing it and making sure that I was satisfied throughout the process. They painted my house which was interior walls and ceilings and exterior painting of my brick home & trim, tiled my bathroom shower, finished trim work and corrected things left undone by the other people, installed ceiling fans in all of my rooms and added wiring & switches in the bathrooms and wired and installed outdoor lighting. I absolutely recommend him and his team and will work with him again (hopefully in the near future!)

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much is a redwood fence per foot?

A redwood fence is a long-lasting home investment that can add beauty and major curb appeal to your home. Redwood fence installation costs are higher than those for pressure-treated pine or cedar, due to the relative scarcity of the wood. Pricing can vary for redwood fence installation costs based on regional labor rates, current prices of redwood planks, the height and linear feet of the fence, and any custom designs or features. Redwood fences, in addition to being beautiful, are naturally more resistant against bugs and rot than less hardy or dense woods. Redwood fences also generally fare well in wet or humid climates due to their natural oils — which also make them easier to maintain. Materials costs per linear foot for redwood planks can range anywhere from $6 to $20 or more, depending on grade, quality and height.

How much does it cost to put up a chain-link fence?

Chain-link fence is one of the most affordable options for adding safety and value to your home or business. The national average chain-link fence installation cost is $2,750. Chain-link fences are relatively simple for the pros to install; a fence of less than 150 linear feet can often be put up in under one day. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional workday for each additional 100 linear feet of fence to be installed.

Chain-link fence installation costs are affected by the fluctuating cost of steel, regional labor rates, the height of fence you select, and the features you select, such as a powder-coated finish. The industry standard is galvanized steel, which is rust- and corrosion-resistant. Galvanized chain-link fence installation cost, including labor and materials, is typically $12 per linear foot. For a more contemporary and elegant option, black powder-coated galvanized chain-link fence might cost approximately $15 per linear foot on average, including materials and labor. For industrial sites or businesses, 10-foot-high galvanized chain-link fences may provide additional security, but also have an added cost. A 10-foot-high chain-link fence could cost $17-$18 per linear foot, including labor and materials.

How much does it cost to install a vinyl fence?

A new fence can mean added home value, increased curb appeal, and improved home security. The national average vinyl fence installation cost is $4,600. Vinyl fences have a number of appealing qualities such as their durability, their lasting good looks (they don’t weather like wood does), their versatility, and the fact that they require little to no maintenance such as staining. Fencing companies typically charge per linear foot for vinyl fence installation. They calculate their estimates based on materials to be used, height of fence, linear feet of the proposed fence, and the accessibility of the terrain. If the workers need to level the land before work begins, your vinyl fence installation costs will probably increase. Vinyl fences are typically more expensive than wood or chain-link. For example, one company might charge $19-$22 per linear foot for a basic 6-foot vinyl privacy fence. Another company might charge $25-$35 per linear foot for standard vinyl fencing, while decorative fencing with custom detail could increase that cost to $50 per linear foot. For a 6-foot-high white vinyl privacy fence with two walk-through gates (plus demolition and disposal of the old fence), the cost of the total project could run $8,000. A 4-foot-high, 36-linear-foot white picket vinyl fence with one gate could cost $2,600.

How much does it cost to install a wood fence?

Help define your property line, protect your home and yard, and boost your curb appeal with a new wood fence. The national average for wood fence installation cost is $3,250. Wood fence installation costs will vary based on your geographic location, the type of wood you select, the height and style of wood fence you desire, and the condition of your property. Pressure-treated pine is a common and attractive choice that is usually resilient against rot and bugs. Cedar is another budget-friendly option that, although more expensive than pressure-treated pine, can be more affordable than redwood or teak. A wood fence requires maintenance to ensure its long-term health and beauty, so keep future staining and painting costs in mind when you’re calculating fence installation costs. Here are some examples of how height and material affect the approximate cost of wood fences:

    • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $15-$17 per linear foot.
    • 4-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $13-$20 per linear foot.
    • Cedar fence: $18-$25 per linear foot.
    • 6-foot-high, double-sided (meaning both sides are uniform), pressure-treated pine fence with 6x6 posts: $25 per linear foot.
    • 12-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with custom detailing: $75 per linear foot.
    • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with a custom lattice top: $30-$50 per linear foot.

How much does it cost to install a fence gate?

Adding a gate to your fence can be a practical way to provide access to a yard, work area or outdoor living space while ensuring safety and privacy. Gate installation costs will vary based on the gate material you select, the size of your gate, whether you install a fence at the same time, and any special features you’d like to add. Standard opening size for a single-wide gate is 4 feet; a double-wide gate is 8 feet. A small gate may be for decoration; a double-wide gate can be mounted on a rolling caster system to allow access for cars or wide loads. Here are some examples of average fence gate installation costs:

    • 4-foot, single-swing chain-link gate: $100 for materials and installation costs.
    • 28-foot wheeled chain-link gate on a caster system: $800-$1,000 for materials and installation costs.
    • 4-foot, single-swing wood gate: $75.
    • 8-foot double-wide wood gate: $150.
    • 4-foot white vinyl walk-through gate: $300–$400 for materials and installation costs.
    • 8-foot, double-wide white vinyl gate: about $800 for materials and installation costs.
    • White vinyl gate fence more than 8 feet wide: $1,200-$1,500 for materials and installation.
    • Arched black powder-coated aluminum pool gates: $175-$200 per gate.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
