I hired Charlestowne workshop to replace the crown and floor moulding in my home, and to repair an area of my front porch that had buckling floor joists. They finished the job on time and within my budget, and I couldn't be happier with the results. They are highly professional and apply attention to detail to every step of the project. If I have similar projects to complete in the future I will be contacting them.

Hired two others to repair deck thru Thumbtack. Both men left the job half done. Took one more chance with Salvatore's. Mr. Frank advised me to tear it down and rebuild from ground up. He quoted me a very fair price. When I told him about my prior experiences, he apologized and felt truly sorry for me. I am elderly and live alone in a rural area. Mr. Frank told me he could be on the job in a week, and he wanted no monies til the job is completed. 10 minutes after he left, Mr. Frank called to tell me he was building my porch for FREE. No cell phone reception or I would proudly display a picture. I highly recommend Mr. Frank as a great professional porch builder and a true gentleman.

Mr. Boling provided a reasonable estimate, some excellent recommendations and a superb job in a very professional manner. He has a dedicated crew and backs up his work, going above and beyond to satisfy even the most picky of customers (us!). Anthony answered all my questions and explained every step that was performed in detail. Our brick home needed external wood repair in areas and all wood prepped and painted to include shutters, doors (2 single and 2 double), trim, gable, and the entire area around the roof an d porch. They performed a quality job in a timely manner, even with our Summerville, SC unstable weather conditions and storms rolling in. The communication was excellent. We picked a quality team and will definately contact them again, for our next job. It will be inside work which I mentioned to him and he again provided some excellent suggestions towards that job. We highly recommend Anthony Boling and Tri Square Construction, LLC.

We couldn't be more pleased with the results. The entire house looks amazing, thank you for such beautiful job. They painted the interior and exterior of my house, removed the popcorn ceiling and stained the porches. This quality level is hard to find in Charleston.

Brian was very professional in communicating with me. He was prompt with his responses to my questions and prepared a quote the same day we started talking. I had several small jobs that needed completed and Bob was assigned to do the work. We had a bathroom vinyl floor replaced, a tub re-grouted, a manufactured wood floor repaired, and a screened porch re-screened. It was all completed in two days. All of the jobs were expertly completed. The work site was left in spotless condition. Bob was very friendly and kept us informed of everything he was doing each step of the way. He was very considerate of the effect he and his work had on the household and cleaned up all of the debris. I will contact Brian Elliott again when I have a need for any household repair.

I needed someone to paint my home office, screened in porch & back yard fence. Not having anyone that could provide a referral, I took a chance and searched the web for a painter. Jessica's link came up and I was impressed with how she was a female business owner in a male dominated profession. On top of it, she had her mission statement and a good description of her services on her website. I took a chance and called and am so glad that I did. Jessica was very professional. She offered very good rates for her work and also provided receipts for her expenses. On top of that she did an excellent job. The quality of her work was exceptional. Her staff was also very professional and friendly. I can't say enough good things about my experience with Jessica. She did what she said she was going to do and when she said she would do it. I highly recommend Jessica and would definitely hire her again.

My wife and I decided we wanted to paint the interior of our home so I got on thumbtack and put out a request. Adam replied and I contacted him for more info. He offered to come out on a Saturday to do a walk-thru with us. We liked him and decided we would go with his Company to do the work.First of all he takes pride in his work and is very knowledgeable .You definitely can tell by watching him and talking to him for a short period of time.He goes the extra mile to cover everything and his attention to detail is superb. He started on Monday am and by Wednesday afternoon was done, walls painted (2 coats) and all trim done. I HIGHLY recommend Adam! We are VERY happy with the finished product and will be having him back out to do our front porch. I have all ready recommended him to my neighbor and a few other friends. I can honestly say you would be making a bad decision if you do not call Adam first.

Professional, reasonable, but most importantly - high quality work. He is first building a 10 x 12 shed for us, followed by renovating a screen porch to an enclosed sunroom. The shed is beautifully built; he pays attention to details and reinforces where needed. I highly recommend John. can't wait for our sunroom to begin

All work was done in a timely fashion and Nick follows up on all work to make sure everything is done to his satisfaction and mine. I am quite satisfied with East Coast Doctors and will continue to utilize this company for future needs.

I had a problem with a sagging beam on the front porch and had no idea who to hire to fix it. Fortunately, I called CH&H Renovations. Greg came out and accessed the situation and provided the solution. The beam was replaced, columns and handrail were added. They truly transformed an average looking porch into a beautiful one. I found CH&H to be prompt, courteous and very professional. Price was fair and workmanship outstanding. I absolutely would not hesitate to hire them again. Also had them replace my roof and it looks fantastic.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
