These guys are awesome. I found them on Thumbtack after a tree destroyed my garage in midtown Memphis. I called them and spoke to Langston who was at my house within an hour to give me an estimate which turned out to be very reasonable. They had a crew here by the end of the week, and they did most of the work in one day. They even came back the next day to clean up. I wouId definitely use them again.

We hired Mark and his crew to complete a garage ceiling re-frame that included raising the height of the ceiling. While there were some issues with one of his sub-contractors Mark rectified these issues and made it right in the end. The job is complete and we are content with the work performed.

I had Home Town Home Services help me with less than a 12 hour notice. I met with my realtor and she told me several things I needed to have done in order to put my home on the market. I contacted Rowdy at 5:00 pm on May 5 and he was at my house by 6:00 p.m. (yes 30 minutes later) and I needed 6 rooms painted plus the garage, I needed some shingles replaced as well as some sheetrock work done. Rowdy had a 4 man crew at the house the next morning at 8:00 am. They worked all day and came back Sunday for 4 hours and completed the job. I would highly recommend this company and would consider this company a 5 star company. Thank you for jumping in and helping me get the things that had to be done to get my house listed. The good: David Munns came to our home to review a large job. He quoted a very reasonable price. He showed up daily around 8-9 and worked till about 3-4 pm. David assured us he could get the job done right. We made sure he knew that we would supply anything he needed to get it done. He was also able to purchase paint at a great price. The Bad: David Munns suggested that we use flat paint instead of shiny because if we didnt he said that we would see every flaw in the paint. But we wanted eggshell because the paint was for kitchen and dining area and you can't wipe down flat paint if food spatter gets on it. We went with his recommendation at first before we understood this about dining areas. The flat paint did not look good though and the colors didn't look the same as the samples when applied to the walls. We purchased more paint for the second coat in eggshell. However after he painted the first coat we noticed that he had got paint all over the cabinets and our white trim, He also had assured us that he could paint over the wallpaper, had done it plenty of times before and it would look alright. He said that he and would peel back, sand and mudd the edges before painting them but he neglected to do so and it was looking pretty bad. All around our trim and the edges of the walls look terrible with the flat flaw covering paint. Also noted but not even mentioned to him cause we were trying to be easy going, was nail holes not filled in or sanded down just painted over leaving rough places and holes. Things we had agreed to be done before the job started. The terrible: I would have worked with all this but when we pointed this out and asked him about these things, he assured us he would fix it, we accepted that from him but then instead, he took offense to our having questioned his work and left without telling us that he was going. We were astonished that he would do that and it seemed very unreasonable to get so upset. After all we were paying him a lot of money for the job and just wanted to make sure it was done appropriately. He left more work to be done than when he started. David seemed personable but he didn't explain things well and took it personal when we asked him questions even though we assured him we just wanted to be on the same page and make sure the final result came out right. He seemed to want to cut corners instead of doing it right and as agreed. He blamed the builders any time we pointed out anow area saying that they had done a poor job when building our home. After Mr. Munns suprised us by leaving suddenly I tried to call and messaged him asking him to come back and tried to work things out but he didn't respond. We are very dissapointed and feel that Mr. Munns was unprofessional in his dealings with us just quitting like that. We thought we were fair with him and we also spoke calmly and nicely to him when asking him questions and pointing out what we wanted fixed. We paid a deposit and now have to dispute those charges minus paint costs and have other painters come in to finish the job and fix our cabinets. I would not recommend Liberty Painting to anyone. I didn't want to have to leave a bad review I actually hate this and wish Mr. Munns would have just stuck it out and tried to talk to us. We like to think we are on the same team and that's how it could have been. I hope he was just having a bad day but unfortunately that left us in a poor position that is gonna cost us to fix it.

Kenny Keele and his crew did an excellent job replacing my kitchen cabinets, counter tops and back splash. They removed my fur downs and moved an air vent to make room for taller cabinets. They replaced the lighting and upgraded my electrical outlets. They were respectful of my home and schedule and were overall very pleasant to work with. I look forward to working with them in the future and wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone looking to renovate their kitchen.

The siding/wall/garage was fixed at my house, as well as masonry from split bricks. I was very impressed by the work of both David and his mason. The mason work looked like there was no damage at all! Great job!

Bottom line: Amazing quality, totally professional, and we give our highest recommendation! We hired Luis to re-paint the exterior of our garage. After a day of scraping paint, he explained that the wood siding was so old and rotted, we were in need of new siding. He gave us the option of painting the old or going with the new siding, and we went with the new siding. We really appreciated the information about the state our current siding was in and the options to either replace it or paint it. Shortly after we agreed on the price, we discovered there was no plywood underneath the old siding. Luis immediately offered to put that on as well, and only charge us for the materials. That was much appreciated! Luis and his crew worked tirelessly for about five days straight to complete this job. He was always up front with what was going on and kept us updated throughout the project. We are absolutely amazed at the result. When we moved in a few years ago we thought our garage was a tear down. Now it looks like a brand new garage! We would definitely recommend Luis for any jobs and would love to have him do more work for us in the future!

My husband and I had a wonderful experience with Sykes Construction. John Sykes answered our request for some work on our patio column and also ended up doing some work on our front garage. Their work was excellent and the price they quoted was very fair and accurate. They clearly take a lot of pride in their work - even thoroughly cleaning the area after they were done. They also offered us some additional advice on a couple of other things we had going on - even though we would be doing the work ourselves. They were very pleasant, courteous, and honest and we plan on calling them in the future for other projects we have in mind. Don't hesitate to call for your project. Highly recommended!

Tim Jameson has done work for me for several years. One job was painting my house including repairing rotten wood and painting the outside of my house and workshop building. He also did a bathroom project for me which included stripping wallpaper and repair walls and replaced some plumbing and removal of carpet and installation of tile on the floor. He also painted a paneled bedroom walls and trim. He has an excellent eye for color and has been very helpful in determining paint colors for me. He is a perfectionist and pays attention to detail. I will continue to use him for anything I need done around my house. He has a outgoing personality and is a joy to work with.

R & B Custom Homes built me a new custom garage with man cave upstairs. Garage is fully insulated with custom features like alarm, laminate floors, and crown molding upstairs. Only issue was a vendor who screwed up the schedule by making a late delivery.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

    What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

    • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
    • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
    • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
    • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
