We hired Brad for installing both a water heater and pressure-reducing valve in our condo. There was limited space within the closet where the water heater had to be installed, so the existing pipes were in a complicated setup. Brad took on this job which other plumbers either did not think was possible to complete or wanted to charge twice as much for. He came by the same evening that we hired him, did an excellent job, was very personable, and charged a reasonable price. Could not be happier with the job he did!

Great experience with Jeff. He was prompt, courteous, and resolved our air conditioning problem. Ours was a simple fix and although I believe he would have not charged anything, we did pay him a nominal amount for his time. He also gave great info on our water heaters and we will absolutely call Jeff again when we get ready to replace those. Thank you, Jeff!

Adam was great. We had a water heater blow out the day before overnight guests were coming and he was able to work me into his schedule the very next day. He was able to work around the awkward space our heater is in and knock it out quickly and professionally. I did have to re-seat the vent hood after he left but no biggie. Would definitely recommend!

Steve Communicated with me promptly and was able to provide service the next day. My water heater had been out for five days so he was a godsend! He was flexible and able to pick up my water heater for me and install it within a couple of hours. He was very gracious despite a challenging entry way to my basement. I now have hot water and couldn't be more pleased. His work was incredibly reasonable as well! Thank you Steve!

OMG!! A professional that listened. Mr. Fix It allowed me to describe the problem to him and acted upon the given information. He diagnosed the problem and the repair was completed in no time. I had been w/o water for 6 days due to a busted refrigerator water line ( diagnosed by him). He was very much concerned with restoring the water to my home. He is simply the best! Economically priced. I will call him again, if he'll come back, very old house.

I hired Andrew for installation of a new gas hot water heater. His price was extremely fair, he communicated with me prior to the job and was available for questions. He showed up on time, was polite and professional, and got the job done as promised. I am comfortable recommending Andrew based on my experience, and I will use him for future home projects.

My nine-year-old hot water heater went out all of a sudden. They responded within 15 minutes of my request. Sutter was out the very next day and changed out my hot water heater and also had picked it up from Home Depot for me. The price was fair and the service was outstanding, I will definitely use them again.

Timely, professional, had to go to several places before he was able to find the right part. He fixed our hot water heater and then even went into the crawl space and improved our water pressure.

Allen and his team did an outstanding job. Hot water Heater and AC went out on Sunday night and Allen was diagnosing the issue with me that evening. He and the team came first thing the next morning and had all my issues fixed in one day. They cleaned up everything like they'd never even been there and were extremely polite the entire time. He even inspected and fixed a few common things that homeowners sometimes forget. I'll be calling Allen from now on.

Adam was very helpful, he knows his business, was very knowledgeable and gave me information on how to save some money on some minor maintenance to help my water heater last a lot longer. He was a great conversationalist, easy to talk to and really gave the impression that he cared about my problem. Especially after such short notice because my other plumber from another source was the COMPLETE opposite!

My gas water heater wasn't working well. Jason stated it could be 2 things needed replacing and the approximate price vs a new one. He also told me about code updates and my present heat would not pass this. I got the new one and he got me to code for when i sell my house. Very nice and very professional. Enjoyable experience.

Jason did a great job repairing damage caused by a leaking urinal in my warehouse facility. He was extremely professional, courteous and did an exceptional job repairing the holes and water damage. He made three separate trips to ensure the dry-wall was repaired properly and charged a fair rate. I will use him here at work and personally going forward.

We recently had Wizard Plumbing install a tankless water heater in our home. The owner, Ray, went above and beyond to help us through the entire process. He explained the pros and cons of each unit and guided us towards purchasing the best unit for our needs. In no time he installed and programmed our unit. We were completely satisfied, and have already recommended Wizard Plumbing to our neighbors.

Right before going out of town, our water heater went out. Holt Plumbing worked with our schedule to get it replaced. While our of town our neighbor let us know an outside faucet was running. When I called Holt they suggested they stopped the leak, but not do any major repairs until we returned home. I was so impressed with they way they handled the situation. Responses like these are only part of the reason we only use Holt Plumbing!

This small water leak turned into a week long job. There was rotted wood & mold underneath the flooring that had to be removed & replaced. David & his crew did an outstanding job with the repair. We would hire him again & refer him to other customers.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

When is it time to replace a water heater?

Although regular water heater maintenance and water heater repair may extend the life of your hot water heater, it won’t last forever. Most water heaters have a life expectancy of about 10 years. Many water heaters need to be replaced when they’re 8-12 years old — that’s when they start to show signs of fatal wear, such as leaking around the base of the tank. A water heater should be replaced when it fails to sufficiently heat water for the home; if your heater is operating erratically, check first for a blown fuse or a tripped breaker to make sure an electrical issue isn’t causing the problem. Another time to replace a water heater is when you want to upgrade to either a larger model or a more energy-efficient one.

Why is my hot water not working?

The most common complaint among homeowners is that their hot water isn’t working — and the water heater is generally the culprit. Typically, it isn’t making the water as hot as you’d like it to be. When the water isn’t hot enough — or isn’t hot at all — run through this troubleshooting checklist for basic water heater repair tasks:

  • Make sure the power is connected to the heater, then reset the thermostat.
  • If it’s a gas water heater, make sure the pilot light is lit.
  • Raise the temperature setting on the thermostat.

If these stops don’t lead to hot water, it’s time to either check the heating element in an electric water heater or the burner unit and gas control valve in a gas-powered heater. A water heater repair and maintenance company can handle these repair jobs. However, if your hot water heater is eight years or older, it may be time to replace the water heater instead of repairing it.

Who can fix a water heater?

When a water heater stops running effectively, it’s best to hire a water heater repair professional to troubleshoot the problem. Whether it’s a plumbing company that offers water heater repair services or a provider specializing in water heater repair and maintenance, most repair companies offer same-day service as well as weekend and after-hours emergency calls. Usually, water heater repair professionals are experts in both electric and gas systems, as well as tank and tankless heaters, and can repair any kind of unit.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.
