Santiago responded to a request that was uniquely challenging. He initially responded just to remove tiling enclosing a 2nd fl bathtub, bc the tiles prevented a fix of a leaky faucet seeping water through below kitchen ceiling. I accepted Santiago’s offer to do the faucet repair as well bc he so clearly knew what he was talking about in plumbing repair. It ended up saving us a lot of money to have just him finish the job, bc tile repair & then 2nd trip out by a large plumbing outfit would’ve been expensive. Santiago did the job for such an INCREDIBLY good price that we paid him more & will be contacting this highly skilled “generalist” (also does dry wall, painting, etc.) very soon.

Justin just completed painting my kitchen cabinets. My kitchen has been transformed from builder blah to fabulous. What a pleasure it has been working with such a professional and ethical contractor. Justin is an excellent communicator. He always let me know when he would be arriving, and what he planned to do the following day. It was a great experience working with Justin. I will definitely call him for other projects.

I have only the most positive things to say about Travis and his work, and I would recommend him to anyone. We moved out of a rental house and needed someone to fill nail & screw holes and then paint those spots. Travis communicated well, sought to understand the task before beginning, and completed the job in a timely manner. I will definitely be calling him in the future for additional help around the house.

Josh, proprietor of Center Line Painting, was professional, on time and reliable. I mention these traits first because if you have tried to hire anyone for anything, these are most important. Couple that with being a protectionist and you've got an outstanding end result. Josh could have named his company Perfect Paining. He lives up to it! I highly recommend Josh, and neighbors that have seen his work do too.

Sufficient home improvement came out and did some work for me. The details include pressure washing my home and deck. Replacing so rotted boards, and some minor repair work around my house. They were prompt, very professional, and completed each detail I requested. Justin was very reasonable with his prices as well. I will use him for any future projects, and highly recommend him to anyone.

Steven was right on time (about 5 minutes early actually), super easy to communicate with, and did awesome work. He did a variety of different things around my house, and with each one, listened to what I wanted and provided suggestions that I was free to take, or not, and the work was done better than I expected. He also automatically cleaned up after himself and left no trace of having done work, which I have to say, I've never experienced before. Super happy!!

Vision Painting called right back, showed up on time and asked me what I wanted and was willing to accommodate. They were knowledgeable and worked until the job was done. When doing the walk through they were willing to do what ever it took to make me happy - although there was nothing that was needed, they did an awesome job.

I hired Bobby to paint our master bedroom and bathroom a few months ago. The rooms have high ceilings which made it something i put off doing myself for a long time. But it was time to get rid of the drab beige that was there when we bought the house and add some color. Bobby did a fantastic job. I've had some bad experiences in the past with painters who do a quick and sloppy job, but Bobby was skilled and proficient. He protected the floors and furniture, hand cut the trim and corners, and worked around my awful popcorn ceilings with ease. He was pleasant and professional to interact with. I was really happy with the price, especially given the quality of work. I'm having him come back to tackle my stairs, hallways, ceilings and closets to spruce the place up for spring. I've also been considering painting our cabinets and feel comfortable that he has the attention to detail that it takes to do that kind of job right. I appreciate that I now have a go to person for quality, affordable painting.

I recently used AVL Prime Painting to change the color of my living room from brown to white and everything about the experience was excellent! Jason's attention to detail is rivaled only by his quality of work. Communication was prompt and the project was completed on schedule. My experience was beyond exceptional. I am happy to say my family members are planning two more projects with Jason. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend AVL Prime Painting to anyone looking for quality, honest-priced work.

Morgan and her team were very professional, knowledgeable, thorough and sincere in their work painting my 100 year old west asheville bungalow. They were kind and patient with me as I fret over deciding a color combo. They offered their professional and personal opinions which helped greatly in my decision making. The house is unrecognizable from how it was before. Total transformation! Thank you Morgan and co. I am extremely grateful

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do painters cost?

The national average cost for an interior painter ranges between $450 and $900. Interior painters can tackle everything from complete color makeovers in each of your rooms to touching up an accent wall to painting pieces of furniture. The square footage and complexity of the project, along with the materials needed, are the main factors that will affect cost. Other factors include whether you supply the paint yourself or want the painter to do so, whether you move the furniture and do the prep work or ask them to do it, and whether any repair work is needed on the walls. Painting the ceiling and the trim will also have an effect on cost. The type of paint you choose can also raise or lower your house painting cost. A gallon of paint may range from $20 to over $100, depending on quality and brand. Ask your painter if they charge per hour or per square foot, and how much you can save by doing prep work (moving furniture, etc.) yourself.

How much does it cost to paint the interior of a house?

Interior house painting costs are calculated on a few key factors. Nationally, interior house painting projects range from $200 to $2,500. The wide price range indicates how much square footage, paint selection and labor can affect cost. One pro uses a laser to measure each room, subtracting the size of the doors and windows, and then bases the quote on the square footage of the actual surfaces to be painted. Painters may provide you with savings if you opt to paint your entire home rather than just having one room or an accent wall painted. For example, the average house painting cost for an 8x12 room with 8-foot ceilings is roughly $200, when contractor-grade paint is used. Painting ceilings, baseboards and frames can also affect cost. Pros may charge per linear foot to smooth and paint baseboards. In one area pros might charge 50 cents per linear foot to paint baseboards, while pros in another part of the country could charge $1.50 per linear foot for the same task. Painters may charge flat rates for painting door and window frames, with one charging $20-$25 and another $60 per door. Geography and regional costs to do business play a major role in the cost of interior painting. The same painter in a rural region has less to pay in taxes, transportation, insurance and overhead than they would in a major city like New York.

How much does a painter charge per room?

The cost to paint a room will vary based on the size of the room, the type of paint you select, any ceiling or trim work needed, and any repairs needed. If no repairs or other additional work is needed, painting a room with contractor-grade paint could range from $1 to $2 per square foot, including materials. Selecting a luxury paint (some cost more than $100 per gallon) will certainly increase your house painting costs. Here are some additional examples of average house painting costs, per room:

  • 12x12 room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $125
  • 12x12 room with an 8-foot ceiling: about $100
  • 14x16 master bedroom with a 9-foot ceiling: about $150
  • 14x16 master bedroom with an 8-foot ceiling: about $125
  • 16x16 living room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $175
  • 16x16 living room with a 20-foot ceiling: starting at $225
