Tom has done extensive work outside and inside my home including adding rails to the front porch, repairing brickwork and banisters on a side porch, building a covered walkway, extending a fence and adding a gate, installing an ice maker, hanging a chandelier, building a closet, and hanging screen doors. He is a skilled craftsman, professional, and dependable. He comes when he says he will and stays until the job is complete.

Sam did a great job putting down a porch floor and replacing trim wood on my shed. He showed up when he said he would, cleaned up after himself and did a little extra job of removing hardware from manure rakes so I could reuse them instead of throwing them away. He worked within my budget and was open to ideas on what would be the least expensive way to do things but still provide a finished product I was happy with. I will recommend Sam to others and use him for future work.

Harris Contractors installed new vinyl soffits, guttering and down spouts, and re-shingled our back screened porch, on our home. The work was professionally completed in a timely manner and all the workers were pleasant and polite. We would hire again

Had a porch built on to an entry area of house and screen in an existing porch. I felt the quoted price was reasonable and he stayed with in the quoted price. Felt they were efficient & pleased with finished product. I asked re another project which they were able to add to original job &stay within the same time frame. If I have any other work that I find I need done, this will be my go-to contractor!

I was very pleased with the work Brandon and Derek did on my porch. It was in sad shape and needed new tile. They were professional and courteous. Communication was excellent. I will definitely go to them for my future projects.

They were the most reasonable quote which often brings concern of quality but Michael and his crew were fabulous! They tore down my old porch and built a new one twice the size with a shingled awning. It is so sturdy and absolutely beautiful. I am so impressed and highly recommend him to everyone. All the neighbors are envious. I will definitely hire him again. And they complete the job in 10 days. Amazing.

Believe it or not we just bought a house where the guest bedroom was without a window, even though there was a dormer on the outside. We hired Michael to connect the two and he did an amazing job. Since then he has replaced the carpet in my office with hardwood, replaced two doors in the family room, replace the decking on the side covered porch, installed 4 ceiling fans and we just keep finding more and more for him to do.

Allan came to replace a light and fixture on my porch. Troubleshot the issue, located it and replaced it and for a lot cheaper than I expected on spending as well! Great job very happy. 4 star only because his schedule is so limited, otherwise everything was great experience!!!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

    Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
