Mr. Guyton and his team are a rare gift, and 5 stars are not enough!!! Seldom (if ever) have I met such an outstanding, honest and professional company, and you can't go wrong with hiring them!!! First, I'd like to say that this was an exceptional experience from beginning to end, and words cannot express my gratitude to Guyton Roofing! After a damaging storm, I had actually contacted several roofers, and Mr. Guyton replied right away. The interesting thing is that another company had committed to an appointment, and even though Mr. Guyton knew that, he was kind enough to contact me and assure me that if there were any problems at all with the other roofers showing up, he would be there to do whatever was necessary to secure my roof, do the repair and protect my home. As it turned out, the other roofers missed the appointment, and Dustin went out of his way to get to my house and repair what he could of my battered roof. After I contacted my insurance company, they absolutely commended Dustin's actions and his fast response, and because of the extent of the damage, my roof had to be completely replaced. I felt extremely secure in giving Guyton Roofing the job, and he and his team did not disappoint. They went out of their way to complete the job (even over the Christmas Holiday), and I have NEVER received such immediate, professional and reliable service! Guyton Roofing guided me through the technical process of replacing the roof; Mr. Guyton was completely forthright with pricing and the completion date of the project, and HE WENT ABOVE AND BEYOND to ensure that the experience was as seamless as possible. To say that this is a man of integrity is an understatement!!! He cares about what he is doing to help others, and this guides his actions. One other note here is that as soon as the job was finished, the property cleanup was immediate and thorough. It was impossible to tell that I had my roof replaced just a few days prior to the cleanup! Outstanding! Genuine! Honest! Real! Great job by Guyton Roofing!!!

Met with Brian Duke for an estimate. He was extremely knowledgeable, honest, and someone I will work with in the future. Based from his honesty I didn't need work at this time. An honest Contractor means allot! I asked him about future prevention though and what he presented was extremely helpful in something I will do in the future. He was completely reasonable too! I will definitely be recommending him to others as well!

I found the contractor on another site, not here on Thumbtack. I had 5 bids from different contractors. My wife and I reviewed every bid even discussed project scopes with every one of them. We chose Chris based on his professionalism, knowledge of the construction industry as well as checking referrals that he provided to us. They all checked out and we were excited to text him and offered him the job. His responsiveness was very punctual. The project took 6 weeks. It was a kitchen remodel he and the crew completed. What stood him out than the other contractors was that he could measure the kitchen cabinets, made 3D drawings from his office, ordered cabinets as a dealer also installed our beautiful cabinets himself. We got all of these services in 1 package. Something you don't see much anywhere. We met with few kitchen designers (not his) and they had subcontractors that perform the work. That's extra mark-ups we didn't wish to pay for so Chris' price was within few other cabinet quotes we received elsewhere and we knew it was a huge steal of a deal. His professionalism and demeanors were top-notch. He communicated and kept us in the loop of the project daily. We were very pleased with his forthcomings. At the end of the project, he gave us a punch list and asked us to put any blue tape that we see that need to be corrected or touched up. This is exactly how we envisioned when working with a contractor. Our kitchen turned out very beautiful. One thing when we received bids, his estimate was broken down into itemized estimate, outlining every work and cost. We wanted to see exactly where our money was being spent on. If you need a contractor, I would recommend Chris. He's also a very nice gentleman, very understanding of our concerns or requests. We got along very well and ended up becoming friends afterward, something that doesn't happen often anywhere. Happy Customers Bryson & Wendy

Tom is a kind, hardworking, thorough contractor. He helped us turn our once weird, shed roof porch into an amazing screened room that we will use throughout the year. He noticeably put a lot of thought and effort into making our porch better than I could have imagined. I would recommend Tom to anyone and hope to use him for future projects.

I had these guys bail me out of a jam I had gotten myself into with some electrical work. I had one contractor leave me hanging for weeks (6 weeks to be exact). Found these guys called them, they came, they saw, they did. What set MCH apart for me is that they did what they said they were going to do and did it when they said they were going to do it. Its amazing that this is still not the norm for contractors these days. But MCH Restored my confidence, at least for the time being.

I used this contractor for air/heat units replacement and repair at my multiple properties. Their price was the lowest I could find. On one occasion they worked during freezing weather conditions. However quality of work was always excellent.

Michael Bush is a competent carpenter, knows how to do work right, and generally pursues the work in a workmanlike fashion. Overall I was satisfied with his work, the progression of it to completion, and his employees are also competent and loyal to him. I furnished the materials, he furnished the labor, and he did the work as I asked. He will quote the job as a total price or as he did with me. I plan to have him back on an hourly basis for other work, and I recommend him. If both of you have a clear understanding of the work and the costs of it with him, along with how and when it will be done and completed, you should be happy with his work for you. Good individual workers and contractors are hard to find. Tony Miller - http://www.books-n-sundries.com

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

What do construction project managers do?

Construction project managers help in all stages of your construction project, starting from the very first step. Typically paid a percentage of a total project cost, they are part of the design and planning process and help ensure seamless communication between the design parties and the construction team. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, their scope of work includes preparing cost estimates, budgets and work timetables; interpreting and explaining contracts and technical information to other professionals; reporting work progress and budget to clients; collaborating with architects, engineers and other construction pros; selecting subcontractors and scheduling and coordinating their tasks; responding to work delays, emergencies and other problems; and ensuring compliance with legal requirements, building and safety codes, and other regulations.

The work of construction project managers may seem very similar to that of general contractors, but there are some critical differences. One difference is that, unlike most general contractors, project managers are not engaged in the actual construction — they are onsite overseeing the work of subcontractors. Another key difference is that project managers are hired during the design phase, while general contractors are hired after plans have been made. The project manager is generally paid a percentage of the total project cost, while the general contractor is more typically paid according to the bid they gave to build your project.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do I find out if a contractor is licensed?

It’s important to know if your project requires work by a licensed professional, as licensing laws can vary by state, locality, and job details. You can find general licensing information online at the government websites that handle occupational licensing for a given profession in your state or location. Some states designate a project cost over which you have to hire a licensed contractor. To find qualified licensed contractors, search your state’s licensing board. For example, in California, the Department of Consumer Affairs operates a searchable database through the Contractors State License Board. In some states, contracting licenses are provided at a regional level. You can find links to specific databases on BRB Publications’ Occupational Licensing page. Red flags that a contractor may not be licensed or may be providing an expired or false license number are unreasonably low bids or a request for complete payment upfront. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
