They tiled multiple areas(including kitchen back-splash), installed hardwood flooring, painted kitchen cabinets, including new doors. They also painted rooms, shutters and exterior door and installed a window. These jobs were done with the utmost professionalism and work quality. Robert and Brandy did a beautiful job installing the laminate flooring I had pre-purchased on sale at Lowes for our new thetransferlab.com office in Brentwood. Within seconds of their arrival Robert discussed the plan for installation while Brandy scoped out what needed to be done to remove the old carpet. Not only did they do a great job on the new installation, but they also went the extra mile running to the store to get trim pieces i had forgotten to purchase. One other happy story ... During their installation I returned unannounced to check on their progress and discovered Brandy repairing a problem on a previously installed floor done by someone else. There was a large gap in the boards. I didn't ask them to fix it, yet they took the time to repair it perfectly. It's the extra little things like this that impess me. I must admit, I hired Robert because he had the best bid. I'm vey happy to say, he did a 1st class job. The floor looks fantastic! Ron Royer, Owner The Transfer Lab http://www.thetransferlab.com

Chris did a phenomenal job with my laundry room update. He completed all aspects of the job (repaired the subfloor and wall paneling, corrected the dryer vent to the exterior of the house, tiled the floor and replaced my water heater) but he also completed the job in time for my vacation and did everything to make that timeline. Including returning to the job late in the evening to maintain the schedule. Chris obviously knows what he's doing and I would definitely hire him again. He did not veer from the orginal quote. It was the best experience with a contractor that I've ever had.

I had other flooring contractors come over but hands down Michael was the best. He was honest, fair in price, and professional. His family and employees we're all so nice when I had to discuss things via phone, email, or in person during the job. The workmanship by Micheal and his employee's was awesome. The installed engineered hardwood floors came out great! Michael is great at what he does and when he told me that he is 3rd or 4th generation in his family to be in flooring it showed! For example, we had an issue with two rooms that joined one another. He customed made me two 6 ft reducers out of a rough piece of natural oak to make this transition between the two rooms look awesome. It came out unbelievable! Very rarely do I offer comments. In the case, he deserves positive feedback. Micheal has a nice family flooring business.

I've had Stevan of SD Construction assist me in 2 major home remodeling needs. He has remodeled 2 kitchens, created large additions, customized 5 showers/baths, replaced tile/carpet/vinyl to hard-wood/laminate flooring, made multiple built ins, and much more with high end but cost efficient materials. Stevan's service is truly the best I have ever experienced-detailed, efficient, creative, trustworthy, courteous and with integrity. He offers good advice and will not cut corners for the sake of time/money. Thank you so much, Stevan.

I recently bought new tile flooring for my new home. It is not often I write letters about my service, but when someone, Johny McQuiston of McQuiston Flooring goes above and beyond, I feel it's necessary to share. From the moment I met Johnny, he was extremely kind, professional and really "knew his stuff". Everything was right on target from the start date to finish date. I couldn't be more excited about the end result of my new tiled kitchen floor - it's absolutely beautiful!! Johnny's service, professionalism, knowledge expertise & kindness meant alot to me. A huge THANK YOU goes out to McQuiston Flooring. They were AWESOME!! In closing, I highly recommend McQuiston Flooring for your new flooring project - I give them 10 stars!!!!!! Very satisfied with his work. Not only he did an excellent work with the kitchen backslash tile installation, but he also fixed/repaired a couple of other things (oven light, wood floor repair, etc.) . Very easy to communicate with. It didn't take him long to finish, and he was fast and flexible. I strongly recommend him.

In January 2014 we had a water leak in our laundry room (up stairs). We had both floor and ceiling damage on both floors. Bryan repaired our ceiling, replaced the flooring in the laundry and sealed it so that we feel confident that the same thing could not happen again. He also refinished our wood floor downstairs perfectly, built an entertainment shelf, painted and trimmed our den. His work is excellent and fast. We had waited weeks for help. He came when he said he would and finished quickly.

Chadd’s work is top notch!!!! He showed up on time, finished the job quickly, and kept the work site very clean! It only took a few hours for him to rip up our nasty carpet, and install perfect hardwood! His pricing is very reasonable, especially considering the professionalism and quality of his work. We couldn’t be happier with our new floors!!!

Edanielwell Miller is a wonderful guy. He and his son (who has the same great attitude as his father) laid a laminate floor on our second story. The price was the best, they showed up when they said they would and they were more than accommodating. The floor, shoe molding and stair nose looks wonderful. He was even game to take on the additional task of covering a big "box" in the room with the laminate. This necessitated some fairly intricate finishing work that proved to be a bit beyond his experience level, but nothing we can't live with. I would (and probably will) call him in a minute if I have more work to be done.

It's so nice that I hired recom LLC to help me finish the replacement for the hardwood floor. I was hesitating to decide on the laminated floor or an engineered hardwood floor. Mr. Amin is so patient and professional for answering all of my questions. The installers were so hard working with high efficiency. They finished the project within one day! The most important thing is they offered me the cheapest price! I am so happy to have them!

One of our bathrooms was in need of an overhaul and updating, I contacted Jonn from Cumberland Carpentry to stop out for an estimate to remove the old flooring, put in new vinyl plank flooring, install a new vanity and a new toilet. His estimate was within our budget and we contracted him to complete the job. Our bathroom look gorgeous , the higher vanity and toilet certainly improved the look, the flooring install is perfect and it was completed in record timing. I am very happy with the work he performed, he was so neat and tidy and truly respected my home. thanks again for a job well done

Wayne recently replaced a bedroom floor, installed new windows and did a bathroom remodel for us, with a new tile floor, refurbishing cabinets, changing out the fixtures and adding a beadboard to the lower halves of the walls. He had great suggestions for ways to improve the look of the bathroom. The hardwood floors look terrific and Wayne went above and beyond when he found a way to get a large closet done with the available materials, (which had not been computed to include the closet.) The windows look great and no more leaks.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

    • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
    • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
      • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
    • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
    • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
      • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
    • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
      • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
      • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
      • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
        • Includes removal of the dura rock.
    • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

    • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
      • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
    • 620 square feet of maple floor:
      • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
      • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
        • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
