Craig installed a ceiling fan and fixed a door that wouldn't stay shut. Craig arrived on time, did the install, fixed the door and charged what he had quoted. I am very satisfied and will use Craig for my Handyman needs in the future!

Don was a great help! He showed up early and didn't stop working until the job was done. We had him install 5 fans in our new house and 3 pendant lights and ALL look amazing! We're having him come back to do more this weekend. I am so glad I found Don to do the handyman work around the house that we can't get to. He's definitely someone we will continue to call and rely on to help with household stuff.

I had the pleasure in meeting with Adam to hang two oversized décor pieces. The initial contact in regard to the service performed was handled very professionally. Adam presented an offer and also disclosed that he was insured for unexpected liabilities which was very important to me due to previous experiences. Adam was EXTREMELY knowledgeable about how a wall art piece should be displayed based on eye level and balance. He did not push his ideas on where to hang my décor pieces but simply made suggestions based on his professional background. I have Adam free reign and the job turned out beautifully! I will be using this company in the near future and I would recommend to anyone looking for handyman services to contact Perfect Frames. Pictures attached for reference.

Great with communication and punctuality. We had a move out clean done, so unfortunately, I was not able to see the after. But the staff was very friendly and helpful.

I recently bought a fan for my master bedroom to replace my old one. My husband has been super busy, so I wanted to just have it installed and move on. I posted the job this morning at 7:15am and at 7:17am Harold responded!!! I didn't get any other bids for like 45min. They are ON IT. They were friendly, FAST and took care of everything. I literally did not even have the box opened. He said, "no problem" and I let him do his thing. I tell you what.... having two small children, a super busy husband and a house to keep up with, it sure is nice to count on a reputable handyman! Thank you G S Maintenance!

I've hired Michael twice to assemble furniture. The second time was to put together an Ikea cabinet. Ikea stuff looks simple but it's not - especially cabinets with drawers. They are complicated and its takes patience to get them right so that the drawers open and close properly. I'm happy to say the cabinet he put together for us works perfectly. Michael is great to work with, friendly professional and helpful. I had a couple of extra things he helped me with while he was there. I really appreciate Michael - he is my go to handyman.

Taking it Outdoors/ Andy is great! The first time I have ever found a wonderful handyman. He is reliable, does great work, makes suggestions when needed, friendly, easy to communicate with, very responsive. He works very hard. I had a hard deadline to get some things done before an event I was hosting and he went above and beyond. He has already been out twice and we will have him back in the next couple weeks to do more work. I highly reminded him!! My kids that he is "cool"!

I have used The Fence Rescuer on several occasions and I will never have to look up another handyman/fix it service ever again. The first time was actually a complete face-lift inside my home before we moved in. Frank and his crew worked on several different aspects of my home, from building me a new gate to enclose my backyard, to sealing our attic, and even re-plumbing the back bathroom so it could accommodate my washer and dryer, and on top of it all they even finished the job early. The best part about the experience was the customer service, it was just my mother and I moving into the home, and all of the guys on the crew were not only polite but respectful, and that made us both feel very comfortable. It is truly hard to find trustworthy people that also do such quality work, I know this is a phone number I will be holding onto for sure!!

Jesus was wonderful! My daughter is a college student and was moving into her first apartment off campus. We live out of state and had all the furniture delivered, we just needed someone to help us assemble the pieces. Jesus actually picked us up from the airport and when we got to her apartment not all the furniture was there!! He helped us with our bags, up three floors and put together what little we had. He was kind and most professional even though his job was cut in half! I HGHLY recommend Jesus!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.
