Can’t recommend WM Mivers enough. They’re communication is excellent and prompt, they were running late due to another job but called well in advance to let me know and continued to update me throughout the wait time. Really amazing scheduling- my other movers cancelled and I was stressed about finding something last minute but they squeezed me in with less than 24 hours notice! Really amazing guys and excellent customer service. They are transparent about their fees and there were no surprises when it was time to pay. Super competitive prices without sacrificing quality and customer care. Will absolutely use them again and refer them to all my friends!

Overall, they did the job. However, there were some issues: 1. They were 30 min late. Came after the half hour, yet said the time started at the half hour. Funny timekeeping! 2. Didn't assemble the table properly and wasted valuable time taking it apart then making it properly. Just read the instructions! 3. Above issues are whatever, but key issue is that it smelled like one or both of the movers smoked before they came into my place, and now my furniture has a smoke smell. Ridiculous! Overall, they did the job so 3 stars. But unsatisfied - especially with this smoke smell in my furniture.

These two were so great! Prompt, easy to communicate with, and just overall pleasant to be around ! I highly recommend. It was less for me to expensive to use them, even after tip, than to rent a moving truck to move a couch. They made the whole process so easy, and it was the cherry on top to have movers who were so kind to both me and each other.

Sara and her wonderful crew at Ashford Home Services were the best. We hired them to pack and move our 83 year old parents who had not moved in over 25 years. The Ashford movers were prompt, very hard working, polite, patient and understanding. Sara is very skilled in working with the special needs of seniors. I highly recommend Ashford Home Services.

Spotted Frog went above and beyond my expectations. Jason was the first response I received and was the best value. The rate was very good and no nickel and diming. Many of the other outfits I contacted charged extra any opportunity they could find. I checked other local movers through Yelp, GotMovers, and recommendations through friends, but decided to give Spotted Frog a try. We had a rain delay and mechanical delay, but Jason called the day before to advise they might start an hour later. Jason called ahead and arrived with two other movers (Zach and Alex). They loaded up the ~24 foot trailer and heavy duty truck in about 2 hours. This was an across town move (+20 miles). They finished in about 4 hours all together (2 hours under estimate) and charged exactly the time it took. I was so impressed, I gave them most of the estimated hours back as tip. Not only did they move my 4 bedroom / 3 bath household quickly, they made sure it got there safe. Everything was wrapped tight with moving blankets and anchored down pretty well. I had most items boxed, but I have a big 70" tv, two couches, a futon, 3 beds (king, 2 queen, full headboard and rails), a crib, 2 large dressers, entertainment center, large speaker towers, smoker, 2 bikes, 100 lb kicking bag and full-size stand, desk, dining table, several chairs, lounge chairs, maybe 30 boxes, plus other items. Most of the items were also on the 2nd floor. I don't even remember these guys taking a water break. They were polite and professional as well. I'm sure there are many good movers in Austin, but I wouldn't recommend anyone other than Spotted Frog. Thanks again!

Good price, quick response, movers required oversight and do not show up with their own tools, so it's more like hiring a couple of college kids to come to your house than hiring a "mover".

Todd and Josh were outstanding in helping me solve a problem moving a couch upstairs. Previous movers had been unable to accomplish this. My staircase is small and the second floor ceiling is low. Todd and Josh were able to hoist the couch over the second floor balcony, then maneuver it past a challenging set of doors to the location I wanted it. This involved temporarily removing two heavy wood doors. I recommend them both.

Caleb and his coworker were PHENOMENAL. Not only were they extremely professional and fair, they were also kind and respectful guys to work with. They were able to move furniture for me on a 2 HOUR NOTICE and then went above and beyond to help me move a few extra pieces that I originally said I would move myself but they they ended up having room for on the truck. These guys certainly go the extra mile for all of your moving needs. For anyone moving in the Austin area, I would highly recommend Right Choice Movers! They were by far the best movers I have ever done business with and made moving a painless (and dare I say fun) experience!

Outstanding job. Professional workers, punctual, careful with the furniture. When moving in even suggested layouts in the new property and helped place everything. Also helped me dispose of some bulky items. I moved many times while in the military, and often had the grab-and-dump type movers, or the big companies who damage your stuff in the warehouse rather than during the move. These guys definitely are neither. I highly recommend!

Big fan of One World Van Lines!! I was moving a full 4 bedroom house due to a new job opportunity in California. Getting bombarded with calls and emails was overwhelming (big mistake). A quick search in Austin, TX showed One World Van Lines. My representative, Philip, offered an onsite visual which made everything so much easier. He took his time to walk me through of what to expect and what to do to save money on my end. I chose One World Van Lines based on my agents customer service, attention to detail, and me feel comfortable from day one. Once the movers showed up, they didnt wait or slack off, they got straight to work which finished up pretty quickly for a full house pack. Having expensive decor, collections, and antique furniture made me feel very uneasy at first, however, they were not only careful, they made sure everything was itemized and at the end, NOTHING was missing!! My agent got a great price and quick turn around on delivery! I will recommend One World Van Lines to my family and friends!!!

Easy. Happy. Everything from the word go was 5-Star. I had never used Thumbtack before and was extremely pleased to find Tammy and the team at Greater Austin Moving. Tammy took great care and really listened to my specific moving needs, rather than trying to fit me in to what their moving packages were. Then on moving day, the movers were early (with a courtesy call, of course), efficient, friendly and had just the right tools based on my setup call. 5-Stars across the board. I will use them in the future and recommend them to friends and family. They even took my afternoon, small-window arrival request. THANK YOU!! - Thomas K.

My movers just left and requested a review as quickly as possible. I assured them that I would provide then with a 10 out of 5 star rating. Most importantly, the young men were respectful to my husband and I. I am 67 years old so I was on the young men from start to finish - making sure they were respectful of my belongings and home. They wrapped all of my furniture and assisting with packing items that were not packed upon their arrival. I did notice a small hole in the wall at the pick up address. Tight corners so I did not complain. But I did want them to know that I noticed. Other than that, my belongings arrived in great shape. I will recommend to my friend Margaret who will be moving in about 2 weeks. I informed her to request Mark and Stephen. Thanks again for your hard work. Spend your tip wisely.

I had furniture delivered, but t, they would not move the old furniture upstairs. I called Isaac Galloway at Freedom Movers around 4:00 p.m. to see if they could do the job. He called his men and they readily agreed. They were in Houston and I am I. Baytown. They started my job at 6:48 p.m. and finished before 8:00. I had furniture moved from downstairs (heavy leather) to upstairs, and then furniture from upstairs to downstairs (again, heavy furniture). The service that we received was very professional, and they did a great job. They were very hard workers, and did not stop until the work was done. They also took extra care in not damaging the furniture. Would definitely use them again.

I hired Done.com to move me from an apartment downtown to a house on the Eastside. I HATE moving and always seem to have the worst experiences (one time a mover went to the bathroom in my master bathroom and clogged the toilet!) This was my first pleasant moving experience. The two movers showed up on time and moved me in less than four hours (I thought it was going to take at least six - I have a lot of furniture). They were really polite and handled all my boxes with care. They even brought me water! I hope I don't have to move again anytime soon but when i do I'm calling these guys.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

      • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
      • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
      • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
      • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
      • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
