From the first lesson on, we will work on proper hand technique and body mechanics, so that you can build strength/endurance/speed and avoid injury. I will open your ears to all the different sounds the drums and cymbals can make. We will explore great books, songs, and videos from amazing drummers, and if you have a piece of music you want to learn, I will help with that as well. Hi! I'm Matt. I offer drum and beginner piano lessons in the Austin area. For drum lessons, all ages are welcome at any experience level. For piano lessons, all ages are welcome. These lessons are geared towards beginners. My teaching methods come from the accumulation of 2 decades of performing, recording, studying, and teaching music professionally. My focus for all my students is applying the skills we learn on the instrument directly and playing along with music. This makes learning more enjoyable, and the skills become internalized more efficiently. Please check out my website for more details, or you can call or text to set up a lesson. Thanks! Matt Danko

  • Drum Lessons Austin

    (3 reviews)

Welcome to Drum Lessons Austin! Emphasis is on playing, not talking your ear off. Instructor Pedro Horta accompanies you on piano (or drums for piano students), so you get used to how to "play in a band." It's a lot of fun and hones your ability to listen and keep a steady time while rockin' out with other musicians. Pedro has a wide range of students, including children with learning disabilities. He has a B.A. in music from Amherst College, MA and over 10 years of teaching experience. With each individual student, Pedro offers exercises, songs, and techniques to practice that will help you begin seeing positive results immediately. Drum lessons are tailored to your musical tastes and level of commitment. Never fear! Much of what is thought of as difficult to play or understand in music is only mysterious until it is explained and practiced. In addition to learning by ear, all of Pedro's students learn how to read and eventually write out their own drum and piano compositions. Just wait; you'll be groovin' and sight reading by the end of the first lesson! Lessons are for all ages and levels right here in Austin, TX. Pedro has a full studio complement of amps, keyboard, and recording gears. Starting a band? Invite your friends and family over for a 'band practice.' For reviews, bio, location, and rates, please visit the site above. Thanks!

  • Learning Guitar the Fun Way!

    (2 reviews)

Hello! Thank you for looking at my bio! I have been playing guitar and performing for over 11 years now, and teaching for over 6 years. I have developed a method of learning guitar that is fun, easy, and will work for you! I have an infinite knowledge about technique, tone, and music theory to teach, however my mission is to get you to the point where you are able to write your own music! I have taught beginners, intermediate and even advanced students in the past. I have also taught many classes over the years. My lessons consist of learning proper acoustic and electric techniques along with ear training. Also, a portion of the lesson will be devoted to learning songs of the students choice. **these lessons are purely supposed to be fun and enjoyable! I read music and study theory, but these topics will be reserved for more advanced students that choose to study these topics. Breakdown of lesson: 5-10 minutes of listening to music (that we both choose in order to discuss) 10 minutes of warm up exercises 20 minutes of technique study (proper chords, scales, foundations) 10 minutes of ear training (basic theory: why a chord is major/minor, etc) Remainder (30min) devoted to working on a song from this week or the previous week. (For more advanced students, gear talk will be included. I have studied all of the variables to a good sound for years and love sharing my knowledge) You are the boss! Pick and choose what you would like to learn, these are just guidelines that have worked for me in the past. If you decide you would like continue with me, I'll bring you a nice organizer to keep all of your music in! Guitar changed my life! I want to bring the gift of music to as many folks as possible. Let's play together!

  • Austin Drum Lessons with Kirk

Beginner, intermediate and advanced students are welcome. I have a studio in South Austin. Since the age of 15, I have been performing. I have played in rock, jazz, pop, Zydeco, cover, funk and experimental projects. As a top drummer for hire in town, I'm the guy you call on short notice when your drummer can't make it for some reason or quits. I also play in a classic rock band and in a variety band. I have extensive stage experience as well as studio experience. I am specifically interested in students who are prepared to take their abilities and stage dynamics to the next level. I teach from the perspective that some musicians have a lot to say (dynamics and phrasing) and some musicians have a large vocabulary (many chops). We will work on what you have to express and say and how to say it through the most passionate and powerful of instruments. Also, I have worked for a Fortune 500 company and have been in the business world for numerous years as a headhunter and consultant. You can rely on a conscientious and professional experience. I also have numerous years of experience as an adult educator and a coach. Rates are $35 per hour at my studio near Riverside Dr. and Pleasant Valley. I love drums, and I love teaching. Call me! Let's set your free first lesson.

About me, the teacher: I, Michael F, a native Texan, am a recent graduate of the University of Texas College of Fine Arts with a concentration in audio recording, piano performance, education and percussion. I have a deep set musical ability and love for music and have been playing passionately since a very young age. I am relaxed, fun, patient, and enjoy sharing my knowledge to spread the joy of what has kept me so very happy. I hope to give my students the same joy to keep their view of life optimistic and continue to see the beauty that the world has to offer through music. I have taken piano lessons for 14 years and studied with world renowned performer and teacher, Dr. Nancy Burton Garrett, for 3 years at UT. I've taken drum lessons for 11 years and studied with Thad Anderson, the previous drum director for the UT Drum Line, and Tony Edwards, principal percussionist for the Austin Symphony Orchestra. I was a finalist in the Butler School of Music's Nilsson Solo Piano Competition, performing a repertoire ranging from early classical to modern music. I have worked as an instructor in the Totally Cool Totally Arts program with the City of Austin with children and youth, teaching hand drums classes and general music skills, including recording and drum making. In addition, I am a local composer and a member of the Austin Civic Orchestra. I also helped start local Austin bands named "Cactus Peach", "Thanks Light", & "Miclaw", playing drum set and keyboard with an Indie Rock influence, all original songs of which I wrote my own parts for and have also written songs myself. We have toured and performed shows in the hundreds at various venues all around Texas. We have released many albums on which I collaborated to record, mix and publish with some engineers we've worked with, such as Steve Krause, Travis Bonner, and myself as well. My pedagogy skills include creative approaches, motivation toward high standards, and piano guild completion for confidence and refining musical details in artistic performance.

I am a member of the Vic Firth Education team and I tailor each individual lesson to fit the needs of my students and work very hard to make the lessons both educational and fun. I believe that it is very important to have a teacher that is passionate about the music and about education. I work on all aspects of music and focus on achieving goals that I set with the students. I teach how to read music and rhythms and work on the technical aspect of the music. I also have students play along to music that they enjoy and teach them the skills to be able to improvise and create drum grooves, melodies, and rhythms of their own. I have the tools needed to teach the students what they want to learn and teach proper techniques and motions to ensure that no one gets hurt!

What do you love about your job?

I love to play drums and create music with other people. My co-workers push me to do my absolute best and keep me grounded. My students keep me humble and remind me that I will always be a student of music too. All I want from my career is to share the sensation of pure enchantment and resonance that I have experienced while discovering music. That to me is the priceless reason for my existence. I do what I love and I love what I do!

What or who inspired you to start your own business?

My mother, Michael Jordan, Buddy Rich as well as all of my music mentors and professors inspired me to start my own business.
