Pete contacted me right away and set up an appointment. He was courteous and professional. He provided the service requested, troubleshot another issue and was able to fix the problem right then and only charged me for the additional part, and he gave me a discount! No additional service fees! I recommend this company highly and will call them again for any work needed for heat and air conditioning.

The job was to replace my AC unit because it hadn't been working for a while. Mike actually told me it didn't need to be replaced and just needed a good repair. he fixed it and saved me throusands. It was really nice of him and there's no other company in Austin that I would rather deal with. I would definitely like to work with him again and will recommend him to all those who need good and efficient work done when it comes to air conditioning.

Mark was at my house within an hour on a Saturday, diagnosed the problem within a few minutes, gave me options, ordered parts, and completed the job two days later. I’ve had several HVAC companies come out to try and address my issue and they were either unsure or unresponsive. Super happy I got in touch with Mark. HIGHLY recommend these guys!!

Working with Saunders Heating and Air was a great experience. We worked with Jason. He was very quick to answer all of our questions and concerns, and very quick to actually get out to our house to assess the situation and repair it. Jason and team were very professional to work with. Our AC is working better than ever and we are happy. Thanks again!

Brian helped me understand my air conditioning options and gave me a great quote. I've got the info I need to get a system in a few months. He was very helpful. I had an extra vent added and some insulation to try and quiet my system down and make it more comfortable in the house. The tech came right when promised, got the work done, then cleaned everything up.

The great experience with Professional AC & Heating started from the jump. Domingo was the first to respond to my request. Susie answered my phone call when I called to schedule a visit. She had Domingo out to my house in an hour after I posted to Thumbtack. While at my house he did a great job troubleshooting the issue. Domingo also took the time to thoroughly explain to me my options for fixing my AC, from part replacement to full system replacement. He explained the pros and cons of each approach so I could make an educated decision. He wasn't pushy, simply laying the facts and appreciating the many aspects of this decision I had to weigh. Domingo went above and beyond by also showing me how I could help myself save some money by doing some basic work myself around the house that had very little to do with the job I was hiring him for. After shopping around, I found that I had also received the most competitive, fair price for a new AC unit and coil. At this point it was a no brainer. Angel and I believe Luke did my install. Angel was just as patient with my questions as Domingo was and happily explained everything they were doing so I could better manage my systems moving forward. The install was quick - just a few hours -professional, and clean. Everyone I worked with at this company was top notch and I would happily hire them again and recommend them to my neighbors (which I already have).

Luke showed up on time and very well prepared and obviously very experienced in the HVAC trade.I called for an AC tune-up and check what I got was an education that will potentially save us thousands going forward! Our unit is 20 years old and he showed me the wear and tear on it as well as the parts that were still working well. He took the time and carefully explained and showed me the parts how they worked. The preventative maintenance tutorial alone was worth the inspection cost! Give Luke a call as a second opinion before someone tries to jam you with a unit replacement, he'll give it to you straight.

Showed up on time and described our options for keeping our current A/C system running well or what it would cost to replace the entire unit. He explained the pros and cons of both and let us decide without pressuring us either way. Will definitely use Air Repair Co. again when it is time to replace the unit.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How often should you get your air ducts cleaned?

How often you should clean your air ducts depends on your situation. If you or someone in the home has asthma or is acutely allergic to certain airborne materials or pollen, regular duct cleaning may be helpful. The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t have an official position on the necessity of air duct cleaning unless the ducts have been contaminated by rodents, insects or mold, or you are aware of particles blowing out through the vents. The EPA recommends you have your air ducts cleaned on an as-needed basis. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) suggests having air ducts cleaned every three to five years.

Be cautious with companies that offer “whole house air duct cleaning,” urges the NADCA. The company may be using unscrupulous tactics to upsell you once they get started. Before any work begins, always clarify in writing what the job entails and what the cost will be. To protect yourself against fraud, read customer reviews and verify that your HVAC cleaning service has applicable licenses and certifications.

    What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

Do you need to clean your air ducts?

Air duct cleaning is done by heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) professionals. The pros use industrial-strength, truck-mounted vacuums and powerful brushes and hoses to clean inside the metal ducts that make up your forced air heating and cooling system. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends duct cleaning if there is “substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface ducts, ducts that are infested with vermin such as rodents or insects, or ducts that are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles are actually released into the home from your supply registers.”

You should also have air ducts cleaned after recent water contamination or water damage to prevent mold; after renovations or remodeling to ensure debris and dust didn’t settle in the vents and ducts; if you are having problems with allergies or asthma; or when you are moving into a newly purchased home, especially if the previous owners smoked or had pets. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends getting your air ducts cleaned every three to five years, or every two to three years in regions where homeowners use their air conditioning and heater for many months of the year, while the EPA suggests homeowners have duct cleaning done as needed.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

    • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
    • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
    • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
    • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
      • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
    • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
      • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
    • Your home has humidity problems.
    • Your home has excessive dust.
      • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
    • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
      • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
    • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
      • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.
