Impressive! Bridgid and a rockabilly guitarist played at our wedding: prelude, ceremony and dinner reception. They were FABULOUS. Coming from a family of musicians, music was really important to us, and we were all blown away by the quality of the performance and by their ability to move between the beautiful classical music that we chose for the ceremony, into the country western and swing music that we requested during the reception. I got so many compliments on how good they were and how much everyone enjoyed their songs. Five stars music, and five stars service. Arranging the performance through Thumbtack and with Bridgid's assistant was so painless. They were both a pleasure to work with. Communication was prompt and clear. I just want to keep going on and on about how great they were but hopefully I've convinced you by now that Bridgid can play whatever you request beautifully and with a level of professionalism that will make your wedding planning easier.

Working with Micah was amazing! I gained confidence in my piano playing and I learned various styles of jazz and music theory. He was very accommodating to my busy school schedule and he's friendly and fun to work with. I like that he customizes your lessons according to your skill and your preference of how fast you want to learn the material. He is definitely great at teaching as he knows how to explain things really well. I would highly recommend him to anyone!

Matt Thomas is the best!! He has been the DJ for two events, one being my best friend's wedding and the other my own. He's great at reading the crowd and keeping the energy up, and he knows the exact song to play to get people out of their seats! I would definitely recommend him for your event. He may even jam along on guitar to some tunes if you're lucky.

I came to Jacob with some very basic knowledge of the guitar – blues scales, open chords, barre chords. Within a year, I've started playing jazz charts, improvising over backing tracks, and overall I feel much more comfortable with my playing. Jacob has a fantastic background in jazz and classical – and is pretty much capable of breaking down the nuts and bolts of any type of music. He's easy-going and a good communicator. I'm looking forward to another year of lessons!

Amy is an award winning artist that has completed 2 projects for me. The first consisted of several paintings on the wall of my sustainable clay-sand-straw cottage, which she skillfully executed in the exact style I'd requested... that of an artist we both loved and admired. The second project was a strikingly beautiful medical illustration on a mannequin. Her next project for me will be painting the details on a 61/2 foot tall sculpture of a unicorn! She is super responsive and super fast, too!!

Christopher Rains can do it all! He has done several jobs for me both ergonomic and artistic and in all has succeeded my expectations beyond belief. He has built custom bathroom shelves, bedroom closet shelves, and an entertainment center. He made my Texas History classroom the envy of campus with a large globe wall mural, Texas map complete with regions and vegetation, and a Texas themed hand painted broom and dust pan to match. He even took an old guitar and painted it to look like a Texas flag. He also painted my front door in to a lovely, welcoming chalk board. He even designed a remote pulley system so that my remote hangs from a pulley on the ceiling. I have not lost my remote since. If you have a job to do, Chris Rains is your man!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

      • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
      • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
      • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
