We had a drainage issue with runoff pooling around the back of the house and in the back yard. We talked to several contractors and thought Mike had the best idea to solve the problem. His crew put in a French drain across the back yard and around the house to catch the run off. The soil around the back of the house was lightly regraded for drainage, then covered with river rock with a flagstone pathway. We also had them extend our existing retaining wall, rework the steps that were blocking water flow, and then add a layer of rock to improve appearance and redirect water into the drains. We are very pleased with how it turned out. My only criticism is that I would have liked to have had some finishing detail around the drains behind the retaining wall which I didn't realize was not in the bid. But it is something we can easily fix ourselves, so not a big deal.

We are very happy with Scotty. We had high water pressure, and we thought we did not have regulator. He came and dig it up and told me that we had one. He replaced the regulator and psi drops to 60. Will contact him again if we have another plumbing project.

Quality: The finish they did was great! Matched other rooms very well. Getting a good texture match was important to me. Professionalism: Team was polite and courteous. Responsiveness: Joel always responded via Thumbtack quickly. I always knew the status of the work and when he thought they would be finished. Value: His bid was not the cheapest nor the most expensive. I find you get what you pay for -- and for the quality of work, what he bid was very reasonable. Punctuality: In general, very punctual. Our first day the team was a little late (got hung up at the supply store), but they hustled over as fast as they could. Otherwise, they finished when I expected they would. Other remarks: Popcorn removal is a messy process -- this case was no exception. While they did an admirable job covering the floors, and trying to minimize the impact, dust still got everywhere - even in parts of the house where they weren't working. There was also texture splatter here and there, but they cleaned it up without complaint. Expect that this process will require you paint your walls in the rooms where it is done. The ceiling will look so much nicer it will make your walls look awful. If you plan to paint your walls, wait and do popcorn removal first. :D They also were game to take on a little extra item here and there (we negotiated $$ as we went). Saved me from having to hire separate contractors later -- so that was a bonus. Having worked with a lot of sub-contractors and home improvement projects, the work was done very well. The dust / mess I can clean-up (and frankly, it was expected). Solid A overall.

Fina Ross guided us through a major remodel of our master bath, giving us the unique, old world style retreat that we always wanted. We love it every day. We have even had visitors who come back to our house with friends just to show them our bathroom. Other contractors lacked the vision, creativity, artistry and know how help us, and Fina Ross stood out right away as a contractor willing to go the extra mile and bring ingenuity, craftsmanship, and cost-consciousness to a big project. She spent hours walking us through choices and drawing sketches until we had exactly the look we wanted. She wraps design skills into every step of her projects at no extra charge, and that alone puts her head and shoulders above the rest. Additionally, she is relentlessly committed to customer satisfaction. She took every one of our phone calls, responded ot all emails, made herself available for meetings at any time that was convenient for us, AND applied the same level of service to the few minor issues we had after the job was finished and after she and been fully paid.

We wanted glass tile installed on 9'x5' wall in our half-bath. Humberto did an amazing job installing the tile. Humberto was on time, the tile installation quality was incredible, and the value was awesome as well. My wife loves the tile and we are already thinking of other jobs for Humberto. Highly recommended.

Felipe and Jacob were great guys. They were easy to work with and met all my needs. They did an excellent job for the most part. The only thing I would say is that the tile work could have been a tad bit better.

I also ask each contractor to provide phone number of references before I hire them and did this with David. The first lady I talked with was an elderly lady and she spoke so highly of David that I wanted to ask her to confirm she wasn't his grandmother! After hearing similar good things from others I hired David to do tile work for my bathroom and stone work for the shower. The quality of the work was superb. David is one of those guys who has great skill and the commitment to do the job right. Because I wasn't exactly sure how I wanted to finish the rock shower, David and I agreed on a hourly fee so I could make any changes as we went. I was very impressed when I saw on one invoice that he didn't charge me the whole time he was working one day because he felt like he had made a mistake that caused extra time and didn't feel that I should have to pay for him to fix it. Overall I was extremely pleased with his work. He does a great job and is honest in the process.

Chris did a great job removing the popcorn in on of our bedrooms. We didn't want to pay what the larger painting contractors wanted to charge and we didn't want to do it ourself so Chris was the perfect choice. He showed up when planned and finished in the expected time. Finished product looks great.

Chris’s team of Alex and a few other guys did an amazing job. The lines are really clean, when a tile wasn’t right, they fixed it, and they cleaned up well after themselves. Alex was very responsive working with me to be extra tile when needed, text me back when asked for ETAs and worked around me not being home and having a busy schedule. I would hire them again.

Lance remodeled our staircase. From a carpet staircase with half-walls, we knocked down the half-walls and upgraded to a hardwood staircase with metal balusters. The job required the demo of the existing stairs and carpet, dry wall remodeling and painting, staining and finishing of the new hardwood treads, risers and handrails, installing the treads, risers, balusters, handrails and the new trims. It is a complex job and Lance finished it in the most professional way possible. The final product met or exceeded our expectations. He is a skilled and intelligent worker. If he is faced with a new challenge, he starts by researching it and comes up with a solid solution. I liked the fact that, unlike many contractors that I had to deal with, his working day always started early (like 8:30AM or so) and always kept us informed in advance about his next day schedule. His quote was very reasonable, easy to read and understand. He kept a clean workspace inside the house and did all the painting, staining and finishing outside, such that there was no smell in the house. I really appreciated this, because all other contractors that bid for this same job, could not provide a smell free environment and asked to do the staining and finishing inside the house. He is a very reasonable and trustworthy person, accommodating our gap in schedule (we had to leave town for almost four weeks) and our proposed payment schedule. I’m recommending him without any reservation. I’d hire him again for any other job I‘d have. Thank you, Lance!

I've heard horror stories of hiring contractors without knowing them but I am totally pleased with Kyle and his crew. They completed a fence project faster than predicted and they do quality work for a fair price. I recommend them without hesitation.

I had a sudden water leakage from my bathroom faucet, which destroyed the ceiling of the unit below. Also, it turned out that there has been a gradual water leakage which significantly damaged the wooden subfloor structure. I interviewed three contractors including Ken (MD Contracting). One of them could not do it because the scale of the job was beyond his capacity and another one wanted to do a $1500-demolition just to give me a precise estimate. My neighbor found him through his employee who had a very positive experience with Ken. Ken ended up doing my bathroom and the unit below and he gave us reasonable quotes. He is professional and responded to my questions promptly (This was important because I live in NY, and he worked on my investment property in Austin, TX). I strongly recommend Ken as a general contractor, and I will contact him again if I ever need home improvement projects.

Arron and Keith did a fantastic job replacing our dated backsplash with subway tile and transforming our "builder beige" walls into a modern white. I was really impressed with how some damage we had from a dog gate was repaired - it's now like new ad you'd never know there were holes there prior! As par-for-the-course with subway tiling, there were a couple of inconsistencies once finished that the guys pointed out to me to ensure I was aware of. Nothing major, but things I'm OCD about, which they totally understood, and are coming out to fix when we start our next project in January. Arron and Keith strive to blow you away and it shows. They're more than friendly, quite fast, and absolutely reliable. Looking forward to working with them again on the next project!

Truly couldn't be happier with this contractor. They came out and assessed the damage, accurately predicted the reason for the shower leak, worked up several quotes for me, and were extremely patient while I dealt with my insurance company. Not only is Nick knowledgeable about typical builder shortcuts that he's had to fix in the past, he and his team are true artists who take pride in their work. My shower is big, full of angles and was a bugger bear to deal with. He and his team worked magic in not only rebuilding and waterproofing the damaged infrastructure but also the attention to detail and perfectionism that shows in his tile work. I truly couldn't recommend Texas Tile Works enough for their honesty and quality!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to get tiling done?

You can install tiling on your floors, walls, counters, kitchen backsplash, outdoor patio and shower — to name a few places. Tile is beautiful, easy to clean, durable, and resilient against kids and pets. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Often, tile installation specialists quote a price per square foot for installation. Costs can increase if you want the pro to supply the tile instead of ordering it yourself. Other factors that can increase cost include specialized installation with a unique design that will require more labor to install.

Prep work will also affect tile installation costs. Demolition of the existing floor, counter or backsplash takes time and energy that will be reflected in the price. Necessary repairs, such as a sub-floor that needs bolstering before tile flooring can be installed, will also increase costs. For tile showers, one example of tile installation cost may be approximately $25 per square foot including all materials and labor. Average tile installation costs for backsplashes may run anywhere from $10 to $40, depending on the materials selected and the amount of labor required. The larger the area where tile is being installed, the lower the price per square foot will likely be. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for wood-look tile installation in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet.

How much does it cost to tile a shower?

The cost of tiling a shower depends on two main factors: the size of the shower and the quality of the tiles. In general, most professional tilers charge an average of $25 per square foot of tiled area and the national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The tiles themselves are the greatest variable; the cost depends on their size, shape, pattern and manufacturer. For example, tile purchased at a volume discount from a big-box store cost far less than tiles made in small batches by an artisan ceramics shop. Prices can range from as little as $1 to $50 or more per square foot of tile. Other factors that will drive up the total tile installation cost are grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps or soap holders, and surface prep materials, especially if drywall needs to be replaced before the tile can be installed. Many tile installers will also remove and haul away any old materials from an existing shower installation.

How much does it cost to tile a bathroom?

Tile installation costs are a key part of your bathroom remodel costs. The tile you select (which can range from under $2 per square foot to $50 per square foot or more), the demolition and repair work required prior to installation, and the size of the job will all affect cost. You can install tile in the shower, on the counters, on the wall or on the floor. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Bathroom tile is easy to clean and durable for daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom tile installation costs:

  • Tile installation at $25 per square foot of tiled bathroom area.
    • A standard tub and shower combo requires tiles for approximately 60 inches of length. Calculate wall height and add 30 to 36 inches of tub width for the walls at the head and foot of the tub. If the tile walls are 6 feet to 8 feet high, in this example, the tile installation costs would run about $2,000. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with an 8-foot ceiling: $1,450. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with a 10-foot ceiling: $1,650. Price includes materials.

How much does it cost to install a ceramic tile floor?

Tile installation costs for ceramic floors depend on the type of tile you select. You can purchase tile that sells for under $2 per square foot or tile that costs $50 per square foot — or more for artisanal and hand-painted tiles. The cost of labor to install a tile floor will also depend on the tile you select. It is far less labor-intensive to install a white 12-inch by 12-inch square tile than a 2-inch by 2-inch hexagonal tile with a distinct pattern. That extra time and energy equates to a higher per-square-foot installation cost. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for labor to install wood-look tile in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet. That same pro may charge $6 or more per square foot for a more intricate pattern, or a smaller space. Some installers may charge a minimum day rate for ceramic tile floor installation, such as $340 minimum per day, to cover business expenses and employee wages. If you’re looking to reduce costs, removing your existing flooring and handling any repairs needed can help eliminate prep work costs. Prep work may be charged per hour and could cost anywhere from $25 to $80 per hour or more, depending on the region and the type of repair work necessary.

How much does it cost to install tiles in a kitchen?

One of the most common kitchen upgrades is installing decorative backsplash tiles in the space between the counters and cabinets. It’s a chance for homeowners to get creative while also protecting the kitchen walls from splashes and stains. Like all tiling projects, kitchen tile project costs depend on the tiles you choose, installation materials such as grout and mortar, and any surface materials, like replacement backer board. The national average for a tiled kitchen backsplash is $490-$750. In general, pricing averages $10-$40 per square foot for installation, not including tile. Some professional tile installers have a minimum day rate for small projects, which averages $350.
