Brandon was referred to me by a friend and I have found him to be not only knowledgeable in sharing information about what is needed but also reasonable in his pricing. He has gone above and beyond to correct problems discovered by previous HVAC technicians. Most technicians only fix the bare minimum, Brandon has lived up to his company name by demonstrating Integrity in my numerous encounters with him. He is prompt for appointments and has helped me on a least two emergency calls without extra "trip" charges. I recommend him without reservation. As a property manager dealing with many AC problems, he is a breath of fresh air. Tracey

I worked with CJ and he was very professional, prompt, responsive and very knowledgeable. The prices they charge for repairs is higher than other HVAC contractors but he does quality work and explained everything including how other contractors will charge less because they take short cuts which can lead to issues and more costs down the road. In our case that's what happened with some of the repairs we previously had on the AC condenser that we ended up having to have CJ replace. Overall, I am satisfied with the work they did and would consider using again.

Art told me Sundays are good days for him. I lucked out as he was on the way to another location. He was able to swing by and made a fairly quick diagnosis. He was full of info re HVAC's and volunteered several helpful comments about my two systems. Even though he cleaned out one of my HVAC unit's drain, mainly to confirm it was not the source of a leak nearby at the dining room ceiling, he did not charge for that service. He stuck with his $60 quote for the diagnosis. Thanks to him I now realize I have a plumbing issue not related to the HVAC. I strongly recommend him!

Central unit was getting frozen sometimes. And needed clean the coil. With the location of the closet it was hard to get to the coil. But he managed to clean with the small space given. He had to remove the vent which caused him extra work to go to attic and put back the vent tube. He did it all. Other companies refused to do the cleaning due to the location and extra labor to get the job done. But Roberto did it. And did a good job. He knows what he is doing and very knowledgeable. He also helped with other very hopeful information for my unique situation with my ac. Now I have access blowing well! I would definitely consider hiring him again when I have issues with my hvac. And would recommend to my friends to give him a chance.

Gary Hagen, his son, and another helper installed a mini-split system in my master bedroom. Gary came by one week beforehand to view the area we wanted it to be installed. He suggested a different spot than our initial pick due to the electrical box being too close to the original area. He gave us a variety of sizes and brands to choose from, but explained why he would go with a particular brand. He was never pushy. His price was also excellent. On the day of install, they arrived promptly at the agreed upon time. They laid down cardboard and plastic to protect the floor of my bedroom. They worked steadily, and the work quality was excellent. They used levels to make sure the system was level. I chose the spot and height of the install and I absolutely love the quiet performance of the mini-split! Wish I'd done it sooner as that bedroom never got nearly as cold as the rest of the house. Additionally, he took a look at my other a/c systems and gave me an honest appraisal of what they needed. The overall experience leaves me with the impression that Hagen will be servicing our hvac systems for years to come. A great find!

Amazing experience. Red Star was incredible. I found them through Thumbtack and they were fantastic. They offered to work around my schedule and did everything to ensure our satisfaction. The technician (Drew) was at my home at the time agreed upon. That rarely happens nowadays. He then proceeded to listen to my concerns with my HVAC system and promptly got to work. He was professional, thorough and extremely quick. I will absolutely recommend Red Star to all my friends and family. Thank you again for a job well done!

These guys are by far the best HVAC company I have ever dealt with. As a property investor, that says a lot! Sam got to one of my rental properties and diagnosed the problem quickly, contacted me and got permission for the repair and had the system back in business within 30 minutes. I thought I was going to have to buy a complete new system that would set me back thousands and he fixed it for far less. Super happy with these guys

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How much does it cost for a new air conditioning unit?

If you’re ready for a new air conditioning unit, it’s time to start exploring HVAC prices. The price will vary depending on the type of air conditioner you buy and its cooling capacity. Window units, which require minimal installation, are one of the most affordable options on the market. If you’re purchasing from a big-box store, you can expect to pay approximately $120-$1,000 for a window unit. Window units are appealing for their quick setup and relatively low cost, but they can use more energy over time than central air and only cool the room in which they’re installed. Portable air conditioners don’t have the cooling power of a window unit, but they do have the perk of being transportable from room to room. Expect to pay between $225 and $800 for a portable air conditioner, on average. For a whole-house air conditioning system with coils, condenser and line (not including installation or ductwork), the cost from a big-box store can range from approximately $2,000 to $4,000 or more. If you don’t have (and don’t want to put in) ducts, a ductless mini-split air conditioner is a good option, although pricey up front. Pricing can range from $650 to $4,250 per unit on average; you’ll need one unit for each room in which you want temperature control.
