Introduction: I tutor in test preparation for the Accuplacer/THEA/TSI, ASVAB, GED, STAAR, SAT/ACT, TExAS, NCLEX, HESI and other career exams, i.e. the police/EMT exams. I also tutor math, algebra, college remedial math, reading comprehension, phonics, and grammar. I tutor at libraries, bookstores and Starbucks or any other nearby venues seven days a week--mornings, afternoons, or early evenings. I have home-schooled and now enjoy tutoring home-schooled students.
As a retired teacher and tutor at Sylvan, I have taught/tutored all ages from young school-age children/adolescents/young adults to adults wanting to take tests for school/college/ vocation/career, or to return to school/college. My special skill is being able to break down concepts, so that each concept is easily understood. I individualize my tutoring by using many different materials and techniques to enhance my teaching.
I always emphasize from the first session on that if a student doesn't understand a concept the first time I introduce it, that it is up to me to find alternative ways to teach it. The goal is for the student to achieve complete understanding. I encourage questions and ideas from students for solving problems and coming up with their own solutions.
I am available for a meeting before the first tutoring session to see if we would be a good fit, to examine my course materials, and to answer any questions/concerns either the student himself/herself or parent(s) and their child may have.
My students like my sense of humor, love for tutoring, patience, relaxed atmosphere, and my belief that they can become proficient and like the subject(s) they are being tutored in. I enjoy helping my students succeed.
