I was contact by Marcial from Medina Construction & Roofing and two other contractors within 10 minutes after I posted on Thumbtack that I needed a Reroof on my house, the next day he did an inspection on my roof and provided me with a detail estimate for the job and included reference from BBB and Thumbtack, plus a certificate of liability insurance. After reading some reviews and getting two other estimates, I decided to go with Medina Const. for the best price. The job was schedule whitin one week and the work was done in a full day and a half on the entire roof. Marcial is the "man" he is hands on with his crew, he actually is part of the crew, clean job from start to finish, no problem adding extra work for the terrace, and upgrading to 30 year shingle. I would definitely recommend Medina Const. for any roofing project.

Ezequiel Gonzalez did a great job on the masonry/concrete project on my patio. He was extremely fast in response to take the job and answer all questions. He was on time for the estimate and job. My only issue was that he was $50 over budget, as he told me $300 and invoiced me $350, but not a deal breaker. Ezequiel is a true professional. Highly recommended!

Mr. Pichardo and his team did a fantastic job. From removing old siding, installing new siding, frame repair, sealing the perimeter of a garage that leaks, painting, sheetrock, gutters, complex pllumbing work (running new lines-pvc/copper, valves, etc). He is good at finding solutions when there is not always an easy fix. I've dealt with quite a few construction related contractors over the years and I would recommend him to anyone, without hesitation. He also plays guitar and sings very well. Five stars all day.

Langi Concrete and Masonry installed a concrete slab in my back yard. Mr. Langi was professional and courteous, took the time to understand my needs. The team was quick to respond and did a good job. I had a change order that was responded to quickly and they cleaned up the work area as expected. I will definitely use the company again should the need arise.

Frank's work was incredible. I had absolutely the best experience that I've ever had with a contractor with 380 flooring. The process was seamless, all my questions were answered quickly and thoroughly, and I didn't have any "surprises" come up that would have launched my estimate price higher than it actually was. I am so pleased and will be recommending Frank and his team to all of my friends and family.

Keith and his crew were wonderful. They were on time, very courteous and even fixed little cosmetic issues they notices while replacing the roof. They handled all the insurance communication post job for filing receipts for depreciation recovery, all I had to do was open the door. They even went and got paint and mixed it so I didn't have an unfinished repair. They replaced my roof and windows and did things I have never seen contractors do. They swept leaves by the front door, put the couch and curtains back (in the past I have had to clean up behind contractors and put furniture back). They were very nice and treated me, my kids and even my pets like family. If I ever need anything done in the future they will be my 1st phone call. I don't think anyone else could compare to the guys at B&K.

These guys did an awesome job on our rehab house. They widened a doorway, expanded the hot water heater closet so we could put a door on it, added a sub-floor in the bathroom, and sheetrock textured and painted the ceiling in several rooms. They were fast and efficient. Will definitely call them in the future with any of our needs.

Used MGC for several small projects, including a metal storage building, an aquaponics greenhouse, and a mobil poultry coop. Admittedly not large projects but I am very pleased with the design and workmanship of each one. No project is too large or too small and I wouldn't hesitate to use MGC again.

Tim worked on two projects for me. The first was repairing and painting the ceiling of a large 2nd story game room that suffered water damage from a faulty AC unit. He was very meticulous with the repair and was even able to match the 15 year old paint. The repair is unnoticeable now. The 2nd project was the re-framing of the midsection of a 2nd level balcony. The balcony is over 600 sq ft it was leaking and the joists in the middle were rotten. Tim replaced the supports, sub flooring and the ceiling of the covered patio below. It was a very difficult job. Tim's depth of experience showed in the excellent job he did. Tim's always had an outstanding attitude. He was more concerned about the quality of work then he was about the speed of the job. I would highly recommend him for your next project.

I am a commercial flooring contractor in Austin with over 15 years experience. I found Brian and Aisha on thumbtack. They executed an excellent installation at my Mother In-laws house in McKinney. They installed a superior product and provided greater service for about the same cost of big box stores. If you are on the fence or being told different information, you should highly consider using them for your project.

They fixed a lot of holes in drywall with texturing and repairing the door frame/jamb in the hall bathroom. They've done a great job! Even with us and the kids being in the way all day in such a small house. They contacted us on the first day and came out the next day to give a better estimate and we scheduled them for 2 days later. They were prompt and affordable! Would definitely recommend.

How lucky are my wife and I to have found Cesar. We have many good things to say about Cesar beginning with he is an expert craftsman and a perfectionist. We were looking for a contractor to remodel our master bathroom, which included extensive demolition, moving the shower, installing a larger bathtub, rerouting the plumbing under the concrete slab, all new marble tile (floor and walls), new marble counter tops, a new bath cabinet, texturing walls, installing a frame less glass shower enclosure, painting (he had to paint the bathroom twice because of a poor color choice). During the process of doing the above remodel, we decided that 2 upstairs bathrooms needed new floor tile which Cesar also did for us. Additionally, we had new granite installed in our kitchen and we asked Cesar to install the limestone backsplash for us. Cesar contracted for us to have a spice cabinet built to enclose the exposed side of the refrigerator, which turned out spectacular. I cannot say enough good about Cesar and his work ethic. He is extremely honest, very thorough, extremely respectful of you and your property. Cesar knows what he is doing and he does not take shortcuts to get the job done, you can be sure that he will do the job the right way. During the time he spent in our home, Cesar and his great colleague Ozzie (Oswaldo) became part of the family. When the job was done we felt like he was moving out. Sort of sad to see them go. Cesar and Ozzie will do well because they make a great team, they are very honest, and they have a superior work ethic, and a talent for remodeling. Above it all, we found Cesar to price his labor very reasonably. For our job, he presented us with the actual invoices for all materials without markup. Rest assured that should we need work done around our new home, we will be calling Cesar and Ozzie back again. Good luck to you Cesar and Ozzie. You deserve all the best!

Hire this company! Edwin is very professional and he and his team were great to work with and always communicative and prompt. Their work was great quality. I hired him for a number of various jobs and each were completed with precision. He installed a built in mud room, a new cabinet coffee bar for our kitchen, installed a vent-a-hood, put a granite countertop in 1 bathroom and built an in closure for our cat box. We have slowly remodeled our home over the last 5 years and worked with a number of contractors and Edwin and his team are by far the best!

I am the General Manager of a Self Storage facility in Allen TX. Mine is a 'mature' business and thus the property requires occasional tweaking as in repairs or larger than usual up-keep projects. I am fortunate to have enlisted Richard Maytan of SpecTech to aid me in meeting some of these demands at least 3 years ago, and since then SpecTech has been my 'go-to' solution every time work is necessary and I have never had reason to regret Richard's efforts. I have been at times, both amazed at, and thankful for, the broad scope of his knowledge and abilities. Over time, I have had reason to become aware of his skills in carpentry & finish work, welding, metal framing, roofing, masonry & electrical matters just to name a few, as well as extensive abilities in all facets of treework & landscaping to include tree removal or stockade type fencing etc. His knowledge of 'plumbing' also 'saved the day' at my home when a SERIOUS plumbing emergency developed that probably would have been beyond the abilities of some of today's plumbers who only want to install new faucets and clean drain traps. In summary, probably the best way to say I recommend SpecTech / Mr. Maytan is to point out that I have his contact number on my speed dial for both my business and my home.

I recently decided to contract for a covering for my patio so the family can enjoy BBQ and relax outside year around. I searched the Internet for contractors and then requested bids from a handful. After talking with reps from several companies I settled on Cuttwood Construction. I enjoyed meeting Curtis Sharp and was most happy he shared my vision for style and quality. Cuttwood wasn’t the lowest or highest bidder, but I felt the best value and quality. I should note that other contractors wanted anywhere from 30 to 90 days to begin construction. Since it was already late May I wanted to have the project done before the 4th of July or it could wait until next year! Curtis was able to make it happen! The project was started and completed in six days! Since the project was in my backyard Curtis had one of his crew haul the lumber from the delivery point in my driveway to the building site immediately after delivery. David (with some assistance) actually performed the majority of the construction from framing to roofing and to the finish work. I was amazed at how fast they performed the demolition where the new cover joined my house, and then had the framing and roof sheathing all done the first day! I must note that David takes great pride in his workmanship—he is a real craftsman! The finished project included wiring and installation of a ceiling fan, and the addition looks just like it was original to construction of the house. The crew did an excellent job of cleaning up the site and removing debris upon completion. Curtis came to inspect the progress on a daily basis and sometimes multiple times as the project neared completion. He was responsive to my questions, suggestions, and concerns, and I am completely satisfied with the final product. I would hire Cuttwood for future projects with complete confidence.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do construction project managers do?

Construction project managers help in all stages of your construction project, starting from the very first step. Typically paid a percentage of a total project cost, they are part of the design and planning process and help ensure seamless communication between the design parties and the construction team. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, their scope of work includes preparing cost estimates, budgets and work timetables; interpreting and explaining contracts and technical information to other professionals; reporting work progress and budget to clients; collaborating with architects, engineers and other construction pros; selecting subcontractors and scheduling and coordinating their tasks; responding to work delays, emergencies and other problems; and ensuring compliance with legal requirements, building and safety codes, and other regulations.

The work of construction project managers may seem very similar to that of general contractors, but there are some critical differences. One difference is that, unlike most general contractors, project managers are not engaged in the actual construction — they are onsite overseeing the work of subcontractors. Another key difference is that project managers are hired during the design phase, while general contractors are hired after plans have been made. The project manager is generally paid a percentage of the total project cost, while the general contractor is more typically paid according to the bid they gave to build your project.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do I find out if a contractor is licensed?

It’s important to know if your project requires work by a licensed professional, as licensing laws can vary by state, locality, and job details. You can find general licensing information online at the government websites that handle occupational licensing for a given profession in your state or location. Some states designate a project cost over which you have to hire a licensed contractor. To find qualified licensed contractors, search your state’s licensing board. For example, in California, the Department of Consumer Affairs operates a searchable database through the Contractors State License Board. In some states, contracting licenses are provided at a regional level. You can find links to specific databases on BRB Publications’ Occupational Licensing page. Red flags that a contractor may not be licensed or may be providing an expired or false license number are unreasonably low bids or a request for complete payment upfront. How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

How much does a project manager charge per hour?

You may choose to hire a construction project manager for your residential or commercial project. For the hands-on homeowner who wants to be involved in home construction but isn’t comfortable hiring subcontractors, a construction project manager can oversee these relationships and supervise labor. Typically, construction project managers charge a fee that is a flat percentage of the total construction project cost. This may range from 10 percent to 15 percent, depending on the company and the services they provide. This means a $30,000 home remodel project would have a construction project management fee of $3,000-$4,500. Hiring a construction project manager generally precludes the markup on subcontractor labor charged by a general contractor. The drawback to this choice is that, unlike a general contractor, the construction project manager won’t be financially responsible for the work of the subcontractors. For larger projects, you may hire a construction project manager who will also hire a general contractor. This provides the benefits of the general contractor along with the management services of the project manager, who will be on board from the beginning. The construction project manager will be involved in the design phase and work with the architects and the building crew, facilitating a smoother overall process.
