Instagram: @ferryviolinstudio Facebook: Ferry Violin Studio FVS INSTRUCTOR, DOUGLAS FERRY Douglas Benson Ferry of Corinne, Utah, began his violin studies at the early age of three-years-old with the renowned pedagogue, Deborah Moench. From ages fourteen to eighteen, he studied with Ralph Matson, former Concertmaster of the Utah Symphony. Currently, he is a candidate for the Bachelor of Arts degree with an emphasis on music from Brigham Young University (BYU) where he has been under the instruction of Associate Professor, Monte Belknap. He has been a member of the BYU Philharmonic where he has served as principle second violinist and a member of the first violin section. He is a certified violin instructor through the Suzuki Association of Utah and has over ten years of teaching experience. Douglas is an award-winning violinist on the international and state levels. Prior to his collegiate music career, Douglas’ chamber group, the “Jade Quartet” was awarded first place at the 2011 University of Utah Chamber Music Competition. In 2011, he also won the “Best Bach” award at the American String Teachers Association Festival hosted at Weber State. From 2011-2012, Douglas served as the Concertmaster of the Utah Youth Symphony conducted by Barbara Scowcroft, a group in which he played for two years. As a junior in high school, he was featured on the Utah Symphony’s annual “Salute to Youth” concert with three additional performances in Abravanel Hall with the Utah Symphony for over 7,500 Wasatch Front 5th graders as part of an educational outreach program. Furthermore, in 2009, Douglas performed on a live performance on Christopher O’Riley’s National Public Radio program, “From the Top” as Concertmaster of the Gifted Music School Orchestra under conductor Eugene Watnabe. Douglas has been a three-time winner of the State Fair Classical Music Competition, a five-time finalist of the Utah Symphony’s “Salute to Youth” competition, and a three-time member of the UMEA All-State Orchestra. He received superior ratings at the High School State Solo and Ensemble Festival on violin for four consecutive years. Finally, he is a Gold Cup recipient from the National Federation of Music Clubs Festival with eleven superior ratings on violin and eight on piano. In addition to his love for performing and teaching the violin, Douglas possesses a unique interest in academics and animals; he is a student in the Honors Program at BYU and is completing the necessary prerequisite coursework to attend veterinarian school upon graduation. He also likes to run, serve others, and spend time with his family members and friends. As a private violin instructor, Douglas finds fulfillment in helping others achieve musical excellence. He understands that each student is unique and requires specific, personalized instruction to help he or she become their very best. One student at a time, it is his joy to bless the world with the gift of music. FVS INSTRUCTOR, KAREN FERRY Karen Lela Ferry is a sophomore at the Cleveland Institute of Music and studies with Jan Sloman and Stephen Rose. Her previous teachers include Ralph Matson, former concertmaster of the Utah Symphony and Deborah Moench of Salt Lake City. Karen made her solo orchestral debut at age 7 with the Utah Philharmonic Orchestra and in 2014, was a featured soloist with the Utah Symphony on its annual “Salute to Youth” concert. Karen soloed with the Utah Symphony three times on its 2017-2018 season, once as the “All Star Evening” competition winner and twice as a paid guest artist. As a full-scholarship student of the Gifted Music School, Karen performed with world-renowned artists Roberto Diaz, Leon Fleisher, Andres Cardenes, Joseph Silverstein, and Bill McLauglin and was featured on NPR’s, “From the Top.” Karen has been coached in masterclasses by Robert Lipsett, Paul Kantor, Jaime Laredo, Stefan Jackiw, Henryk Kowalski, Laurie Smukler, Ilya Kaler and by members of the Miro, Guarneri, Dover, Ébène, and Jupiter String Quartets.Karen has twice attended the ENCORE Chamber Music Festival where she studied with Jinjoo Cho and the Cavani String Quartet and the Indiana String Academy studying with Grigory Kalinovsky. Karen maintains a 4.0 GPA at CIM, was selected to participate in the Intensive Duo Program and serves in Student Government. Karen also enjoys running, singing, tap dancing, and visiting her family in Corinne, Utah on their cattle ranch.

My experience with ferry was excellent! The teacher was well prepared and on time to my trial lesson. He immediately recognized the areas I need work and helped me develope a strategy to improve in those areas. Overall I'm very happy with my experience, and plan on continuing my instruction with them.
