Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to get the outside of your house painted?

You can expect to pay around $2,535 to get the outside of your house painted, though this cost will increase with larger house sizes (and decrease with smaller ones). The average hourly rate for exterior painters is $45 and ranges from $25-$75.

Wood, brick, stucco, vinyl, aluminum and stone each have their own set of demands. Contact exterior painters near you to get a detailed cost estimate for your house.

What colors should I paint my house exterior?

You have many options when it comes to paint colors. For example, an off-white creates a traditional look, and it looks great with a bright door to contrast it. Yellow is a happy color that, while light blue is reminiscent of an oceanfront style. Gray houses are also on trend, providing a classy and neutral tone that remains warm and inviting.

How often should you paint your house's exterior?

Expert opinion is mixed, but the general range is five to 10 years. However, this depends on many factors. Houses in harsh climates with extreme temperatures, lots of dust or ice or intense sunlight may need more frequent paint jobs than those in temperate climates. Also, wood houses will need new paint more often due to the changes within the wood itself. You should also consider painting the outside of your house if you plan to sell it.

What is the best exterior house paint?

Acrylic paints are generally considered good options for today’s home exterior paint jobs. You can also choose an oil-based or latex (water-based) paint. Also, look into specialty paints for your doors, roof, gutters, siding and other exterior surfaces.

How many coats of paint does the exterior of a house need?

Your house’s exterior will likely need two coats of paint. With two coats, your house will look more even and solid in color and will be better protected from moisture and the elements. The painting should always occur over a primed and well-prepared surface.

What should I look for when choosing a painter?

When choosing a painter, pay attention to online reviews and ratings. Reviews with pictures are especially valuable, as these showcase the painter’s work. It’s also important to check whether your state requires licenses for painters — if it’s required, your contractor should be able to present their license.

Finally, compare estimates and quotes from multiple painters near you. Take into consideration what each one guarantees with the job, including factors like higher-quality paint, extensive preparation and a good warranty.

Does a painter need to enter my home?

If you’re hiring an exterior painter, the painter will likely not need to enter your home. But for interior paint jobs, the painter will need to enter your home.

When talking to potential painters, discuss a strategy to make sure you and the painter(s) stay safe while they’re completing the job in your home. Or, you might want to discuss scheduling the paint job at a later date.

What should I expect from a painting contractor?

You should expect an estimate based on an actual examination of the house, as well as a plan for exactly what the painter will do. During the job, the painters should behave professionally while working as efficiently as possible to complete the job in a reasonable timeframe. Afterward, the only evidence of the paint job should be the paint itself — a professional contractor will clean up thoroughly once a job is done.

Should I pressure wash my house before painting?

Pressure washing your siding before painting is an efficient way to clean your house in preparation for receiving new paint. However, it must be done correctly to avoid causing water damage or damaging the siding itself.

Depending on the PSI rating of your washer, you should stand far away enough from your house to avoid removing paint or etching into the siding itself. Also avoid injecting water behind the siding, which typically occurs when spraying upwards at a low angle.

When in doubt, consider hiring a pressure washer near you before your painter paints your home’s exterior. Or, contact the best painters near you to see if they offer pressure washing services as well.

Is it worth it to hire a painter to paint my house's exterior?

It is nearly always worth it to hire a painter to paint your home’s exterior. While you may feel comfortable painting a small, one-story home, anything with multiple stories, dormers or other complexities are best left to a pro.

Additionally, it’s best to let the pros handle older homes. Any time extensive prep work is needed — such as repairing chipping, bubbling, cracking or peeling paint, or fixing caulking and substrate issues — a pro can  handle it.

Kyle and the Pro Painting team did a great job painting our freshly built wood pergola white. The paint crew was professional and polite and were extremely careful to cover our house siding, plants, and surrounding items outside so that no paint spray damaged them. They completed the job in one day for a reasonable price, and the pergola looks fantastic. We will be calling Kyle and his crew again to paint the exterior of our house in the future. Thanks Pro Painting!

Korey is extremely friendly, professional, customer-focused and a joy to work with. I can always expect him to have everything buttoned-up and provide quick answers to my questions. And, importantly, the work his team provides is high quality. We originally hired his company for an exterior paint job and have also hired him and his company for 2 additional interior paint jobs. Highly recommend Korey and 360 Painting!

Uri did an excellent job painting the entire exterior of my house. He was meticulous in preparing everything, painting separate colors on the walls and trim, and then cleaning up when everything was done. He also took the extra step of painting some sample colors so I could be more certain of my selection before he began. He was also great about working around my timing, meeting me before or after work when necessary. Would highly recommend him for any paint project.

I want to thank USA painting for doing a great job. It took several months to coordinate, because of my own project delays. Rene was kind and patient with me. He followed up, was sincere and told me that he really wanted to do a great job! His crew did an amazing job painting the exterior of the house. The crew was really patient with me too. They listened to my concerns and addressed them. I rarely write reviews and only when they are well deserved. I will be contacting USA Painting again for some other painting that I need at the house. Thanks again for everything Rene!!!

Jesus did a great job on our house! Prices were reasonable and whole team was professional. With expertise and friendliness, Jesus worked with us on identifying colors we wanted and he sent us pictures of the exterior job as they were painting throughout the whole week. We ended up needing some carpentry work done on the house before they could paint. So Jesus set up some contractors to take care of that for us as well. Overall we are SO happy with the work that was done and no detail was left out. Great job!

I hired JPC Painting & Remodeling to help me refresh my home. José answered my request for quote quickly and was on the job site that same day. José walked the property with me inside and outside. As I pointed out what needed to be done, José made notes and commented on how his team would work and what was needed. I had a complete and thorough estimate the next day. After receiving four bids, it was clear JPC Painting & Remodeling was the best for the job. JCP arrived the next day and put down heavy duty paper on my hardwood floors. JCP then performed the following work: * Painted the whole house inside and out to include repair of rotted areas in the exterior trim. Thorough preparation was done to include scraping, caulking, and priming before two coats of paint. * Removed old cast iron plumbing pipes under the house and replaced with PVC. The complete system was redone and properly sloped. * Replaced three exterior doors. * Installed some kitchen cabinets, primed and painted all of the cabinets. * Retiled the kitchen floor using the proper backer board. He finished today after spending two weeks on the job site. His team showed up every day on time and worked the whole day. Truly remarkable to find such a reliable crew. The quality of work is exceptional. José's attention to detail is impeccable. I look forward to using JCP Painting & Remodeling for future work. Thank you José!

Edgar and his crew are fantastic! They showed up when they said they would, this did an excellent paint job. They kept the job site clean, and removed all the trash. The replaced one exterior wall with Hardy Board and it looks great! Everyone was very nice and respectful. They did what they promised for the price quoted. I would hire them again and feel confident in recommending them.

USA Painting did an absolutely fantastic job painting the exterior of my house! I am very detail oriented, and I knew that no matter who I hired, the job wouldn't be perfect. I am thrilled to say I couldn't have been more wrong. Their paint job was FLAWLESS!! I got quotes for the job from three separate painters. Rene at USA Painting quoted me almost half of the other two painters saying my house only needed one coat of paint (2 days of work) when the other painters said I would need it primed with two coats of paint (4-5 days of work). I was skeptical of one coat, but at that price, I thought it was worth trying. I'm so happy I went with Rene and USA Painting. It's so refreshing to have found an honest business person who quoted what I actually needed and not what he thought I would pay. In addition, his crew was very respectful of my property. They made sure to clean-up after themselves, close the gate, and store their items out of the way. They even moved my patio furniture/grill/etc back to the exact same place it had been before the job started. Please hire these guys! They were great!

Korey and his team fully exceeded all of my requirements and expectations. I have been remodeling my home from top to bottom over the last 2 years. I am finally getting ready to put it on the market, but needed to have the entire exterior painted. I had a very tight window to get the work done and Korey made it happen. From a quick and accurate quoting process to working long days and juggling around the weather. I can easily say of the half dozen contractors I have used in the Dallas area Korey and 360 Painting are by far the best communicators and most efficient. What a breath of fresh air!

This company’s bid was $2,000 higher than the next bid to paint my house. I made the decision to go with this firm because they were so nice at the walkthrough and I was very busy and decided to treat myself with a turn key painter. The result was horrific. They did a nice job spraying latex paint on a back structure. But I do not recommend hiring the firm for any job requiring exterior brushwork with wood prep. My historic house had brand new cypress horizontal lap siding on the rear which the carpenter had back primed leaving a thin ridge of dried primer drip on the front of many of the boards. When PRO Painting came on my property to bid the job, I showed the owner one board that I had hand-sanded with a sanding block to remove the paint ridges and to smooth lifted wood grain. He smiled and said absolutely they could do that. When I signed the contract online, that day I also emailed the owner a list of the prep to review what we had talked about in person. The job began and the crew came and I noticed that they were cursorily sanding but definitely not smoothing the grain or removing the paint ridges. I told the project manager and I received an email saying that they would keep my deposit and the job was ended— after one coat of paint. No personal call, just an email. I called the owner and we agreed to continue. Yesterday at the end of the job, after I had emailed a punch list, the owner told me that my first email from the beginning of the project was not part of the contract and had no bearing on this house. The house now has two coats of paint on fresh wood siding that still has lifted grain and edge drips. The owner also told me that the messy brushwork and lack of sanding on the sash window casings was because he hadn’t realized that the windows had so many detail areas. Really? After 19 years in the painting business? This company humored me as a customer and took my job on false premises. I paid in full to be able to go away. The owner took a $300 window off the bill to prevent “sour” relations. Meanwhile, I will now hire a new painter to come and sand off the ridges and the most egregious areas of lifted grain and then paint one last coat. I think the firm is a glad handler who specializes in spraying paint rather than brushing. It was the owner’s comments at the end that made me realize that a handshake doesn’t work here— I made the mistake of not creating an addendum to the contract with my specific prep requests as legally binding.
