Mike did a terrific job of communicating his availability. The price quoted was exactly what he charged me, even though it took longer than originally anticipated. The two new chair height toilets are a dramatic improvement over the low seat height models previously installed. The new kitchen faucet looks great and works very well. All of the work was done with minimal mess and disruption. The cleanup after the work was completed was also appropriate. I would recommend Mike for this type of handyman work and will certainly consider using him in the future for other types of projects.

Craig was great and very knowledgable. He opened up my oven door to clean the layers of glass that had grease stains. He even helped out with an extra task at no additional cost. I'll definitely be calling him again.

Dan did a great job installing two outdoor faucets for me as well as a new bathroom faucet. Very professional and trustworthy. The job was a little more involved than we originally thought, but he did not charge for the additional labor. Will certainly use him again for plumbing repairs.

Joel did great work. He cute tile in our shower for a valve install and did a facet swap in the bathroom. He was great to communicate with and made sure we were comfortable with everything throughout the process. I am going to have him back out next month to do a drywall repair as well.

Expert work on tile grout and will be back to place new shower head and knobs. Only thing I can say is that he poured used water out and accidently hit the bushes, but I suppose that will wash out. Great Service!

I have been looking for someone like Juan to help with some things around my house for a while and I'm so glad I found him. He just finished an install on a new exterior door an did a wonderful job and didn't finish the job until it was hung absolutely perfect! He is going to help with my kitchen remodeling soon too. I would definitely recommend Juan to anyone for home improvement, he does a great job at very reasonable prices and is a very nice man as well! Thanks again!!

Lowell did a great job installing laminate flooring on a rental home I bought. I needed the laminate floors installed but the flooring company who supplied the materials did not have a crew immediately available. Lowell essentially matched the flooring company's pricing and did a better job than the flooring company who did work for me before. He leveled off the uneven floor spots where foundation repair was done, avoided using T-moldings on the transition to the bedroom door, indented the laminate floors under the stone fireplace and the living room baseboards. Although it is not part of the install service, he volunteered to lend me his hand truck to move out a large freezer out of the house which made moving it much easier. He is a very trustworthy person I would not hesitate recommending and hiring him again!

Frank and his son installed a bathroom vanity, shower faucets, and lighting fixtures for us. After our previous handyman left our bathroom projects unfinished, we were a little wary of hiring a new one. Frank had such outstanding reviews that we felt safe trying him. His reviews are spot on! Frank has such a genuine, friendly personality. We were pleased with his work, positive attitude, and helpfulness. We are also hiring Frank to install our new garage door opener and future projects! Hire this handyman & you won't regret it!

The job was to texture our remodeled master bathroom. Great care taken to ensure that all existing cabinets, shower, tub, toilet and floor was covered and protected. Since the job was required as soon as possible, DJ's offered to do the job on a Sunday which was above and beyond what was expected. I was also pleased with the cost of the project which was very reasonable. I will be recommending others to DJ's Construction Company for their professional services.

CJ and his team were great to work with. After receiving estimates from 4 different people, we contracted with Carsa Construction to remodel our master bathroom. Their price was very competitive. The bathroom is small but it was a big job. We removed the garden tub, relocated the shower and extended the closet where the shower once was. Our master bathroom went from an average builder's bathroom to an inviting, comfortable and spacious retreat.

We had to "fire" a contractor who inappropriately installed a door, wood trim and created other mishaps. I found Chuck through Thumbtack to finish the work and I appreciated his positive attitude and how he assured us that he could fix the problems and he did! He did an excellent job and did it below his initial quote. I definitely hope we can have him do more work for us in the future!

Miguel and Carlos were wonderful. Like any remodeling project with an old house, there were several large "hiccups" that needed solving. Some of them much more work than the two of them thought but they plowed through and found solutions. The tile in the bathroom and shower look fantastic. We will be calling on them again for more jobs.

I hired Theo to renovate an entire house. He painted the entire house, installed and repaired drywalls where needed, installed new tiles in both bathroom shower and tub surroundings, installed new pre-hung doors, new baseboards and trims, and other miscellenous job around the house. I am overall very satisified with Theo's job. He's friendly, flexible, and a very nice guy. He does the job done with a smile on his face. I look forward to working with him in the near future and would highly recommend him.

How lucky are my wife and I to have found Cesar. We have many good things to say about Cesar beginning with he is an expert craftsman and a perfectionist. We were looking for a contractor to remodel our master bathroom, which included extensive demolition, moving the shower, installing a larger bathtub, rerouting the plumbing under the concrete slab, all new marble tile (floor and walls), new marble counter tops, a new bath cabinet, texturing walls, installing a frame less glass shower enclosure, painting (he had to paint the bathroom twice because of a poor color choice). During the process of doing the above remodel, we decided that 2 upstairs bathrooms needed new floor tile which Cesar also did for us. Additionally, we had new granite installed in our kitchen and we asked Cesar to install the limestone backsplash for us. Cesar contracted for us to have a spice cabinet built to enclose the exposed side of the refrigerator, which turned out spectacular. I cannot say enough good about Cesar and his work ethic. He is extremely honest, very thorough, extremely respectful of you and your property. Cesar knows what he is doing and he does not take shortcuts to get the job done, you can be sure that he will do the job the right way. During the time he spent in our home, Cesar and his great colleague Ozzie (Oswaldo) became part of the family. When the job was done we felt like he was moving out. Sort of sad to see them go. Cesar and Ozzie will do well because they make a great team, they are very honest, and they have a superior work ethic, and a talent for remodeling. Above it all, we found Cesar to price his labor very reasonably. For our job, he presented us with the actual invoices for all materials without markup. Rest assured that should we need work done around our new home, we will be calling Cesar and Ozzie back again. Good luck to you Cesar and Ozzie. You deserve all the best!

The quality of the work is good. They worked quickly, but as time passed once they were done I started to notice maybe they worked too quickly. Not bad things, but small like the precision of cuts for T-molding around fireplace and baseboards uneven, not something to see on a quick first glance. When moving items around the house, they made small scuffed a few items. Also, I understand they arent a cleaning company but cleaning after yourself is a big thing. I had paint on the kitchen floor and table when no work was done on the kitchen, wood chippings or something in the blinds and window seal. Probably would be 5 stars if not for those things.

Hire this company! Edwin is very professional and he and his team were great to work with and always communicative and prompt. Their work was great quality. I hired him for a number of various jobs and each were completed with precision. He installed a built in mud room, a new cabinet coffee bar for our kitchen, installed a vent-a-hood, put a granite countertop in 1 bathroom and built an in closure for our cat box. We have slowly remodeled our home over the last 5 years and worked with a number of contractors and Edwin and his team are by far the best!

I had an excellent experience with Sami and his crew from The Flooring Shop. Having been through another home improvement that was disastrous, I was very skeptical but they delivered with flying colors. Sami was the only person I got an estimate from that actually followed up with me and was responsive to my emails/texts. Before, during, and after the process, he would always be available to help even after hours and on weekends. They remodeled 2 baths for me installing tile for floor and walls on shower/tub plus a frameless shower. I was very impressed how fast they got the job done and sometimes were working until late. They did quality work at a fair price and I would definitely recommend. Thanks guys!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How do I remodel my bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling is made up of three general phases. The first phase is the planning and permitting phase, in which you determine exactly what you want, what materials and finishes will be used, and what the end product will look like. If you’re competent with design you can handle the planning yourself, or you may hire an interior designer to guide you. During this phase you’ll also hire a general contractor who can help execute your remodel vision, coordinating and overseeing all the subcontractors required to do the bathroom remodeling (plumbers, flooring pros, etc.). When your plan is finalized, your contractor should obtain permits for the work you want done. During this time you’ll work together to order all the materials so they’ll be ready and waiting when it’s time to start construction.

The second phase is construction. Bathroom remodeling typically starts with demolition, removing the old floors, shower and vanity to make way for the new. Delays in delivery of materials, or changing your mind and ordering different materials halfway into the project, will mean that construction has to pause until the new materials arrive. Each subcontractor is dependent on the next to do their work, and the general contractor should keep things moving along at the proper timeline, ensuring that the right materials are available and dealing promptly with any unexpected repairs, such as damage discovered behind the walls or under the floor. The general contractor will also coordinate inspections from the necessary officials if you’ve moved load-bearing walls or done electrical or plumbing work. After construction is complete, the final phase of bathroom remodeling is addressing your punch list. These are all the items that need to be corrected before final payment is handed over to the contractor.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.
