Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Do I need to rototill before laying sod?

Whether you rototill before laying sod depends on your preference, but your ground needs to be prepared for the sod to take root in the soil. A rototiller makes it easy to till up compacted earth so that new sod can easily take hold, but there are other methods you can do. Consult with a sodding professional to discuss which preparation steps should take place before laying sod.

Who can lay sod near me?

Landscapers and sod installation specialists can lay sod. When choosing a professional to lay sod in your yard, read their ratings and reviews from customers. Also, search for photos that showcase actual work done by the pro. And always get cost estimates from several sodding professionals so you can get an idea of how much you should pay for their services.

When should you lay sod?

Sod can be laid any time of the year, though the best time to do so is in the spring or early fall. During this time, temperatures are cooler but grass is still growing.

Summer isn’t ideal for laying sod (but still possible), as the high temperatures demand extra watering that can not only drive up your water bill. It can also make conditions ideal for mold and fungi.

Can you lay sod over existing grass?

There are differing opinions about this topic, which is why you should talk to a sodding professional near you to find out if it’s possible to lay sod over your particular lawn. In some cases, it might be possible. For example, some professionals say the new sod will kill the existing grass underneath and release nutrients that will benefit the new sod.

However, others believe the old grass will disrupt the sod's ability to take root in the soil, and it will die due to a lack of nutrients.

How much does it cost to sod your yard?

If you plan on sodding your yard, expect to pay between $250 and $1,250. You can get a better idea of your own cost by requesting free estimates from sodding professionals near you and calculating the square footage of your yard. Other factors will also affect your cost, including delivery prices, any prep work that needs to be done and additional labor costs.

Do landscapers or lawn care professionals offer remote or virtual services?

Landscapers and lawn care professionals generally do not offer remote or virtual services. But if you come across a profile that states the landscaper is offering remote services, it’s best to contact them to see what type of remote work is offered.

Typically, lawn care and landscaping professionals can perform many of their duties without coming into physical contact with clients. Message local lawn mowing, landscaping, tree trimming, and lawn care companies near you to schedule a video call and inquire about remote services.

Requested a estimate for sod to be laid. Uneven backyard and all dirt. After receiving multiple quotes they seemed like the best option. All pictures and everything explained sounded like they knew what they were doing and was going to come out great. Showed up to lay sod and started great but I knew something was wrong because it was done in 2hrs and all videos I had watched on laying sod took time for my size yard. failed to even out the land properly and lay sod properly. All videos I had seen said sod needed to be staggered and wasn’t. I didn’t receive instructions on how to take care of sod until 2 days after sod was layed. I didn’t realize sod wasn’t on even land until I began watering and saw water made puddles on sod. I was instructed to continue watering sod even if turned brown. Brown still hasn’t gone away and seems dead. 3-4 weeks later nothing has changed when it should have grown a lot and been a lot better. I didn’t expect to pay for dead Sod. Seems like more of a rip off than anything. I paid $1000 for a half done job. Wouldn’t recommend if you want good quality work done.

Very satisfied! Santos and his men do great work. My new st augustine grass sod is thick, green and lush- my neighbors are so jealous! They also did a great job trimming my trees and cleaning up my flowerbeds. Santos was quick to return the next day to make adjustments to my sprinkler system. I would definitely recommend them.

Leo did a great job with my yard. I needed a tree removal, a tree trimming, and needed to lay sod. Leo and crew got everything done in a day, cleaned up everything and got my yard looking nice all for a fair price. After finishing he asked me to turn on my sprinklers so he could get make sure they were still coming up. He noticed one was broken, and he fixed it on the spot, he also noticed that one sprinkler was blocked due to the bushes being so high, so he trimmed those down without asking for more money. 10/10 would definitely hire Leo again

I chose Startex initially for not only for the reviews but because their price for sod installation was by far more competitive than others considering tree roots also required removal to make the project happen. . I was flexible with my timing but noted to them that i needed work done ASAP. Victor at Startex communicated their availability and I was able to get my project complete within 1 week of our initial conversation. As other reviewers noted, Startex followed specific instructions on the dot and ensured my sprinkler system was functioning appropriately. On the fly, they fixed 2 malfunctioning sprinkler heads right after installation. Upon completion, I received detailed instructions for caring for my new grass. Startex is hardworking, meticulous and all around fantastic.
