I first engaged Dr. Lee Enright for tutoring for the GRE's math section. I had been out of school for 20 years and needed a lot of refreshing. He was very great working with me and not making me feel subconscious about my deficiencies. I have made a lot of progress and feel better about the outcome of the test ahead of me. While working with Lee, I engaged Nancy Enright to look over my resume as I needed one for school and for future employment opportunities. She listened to my work history and my goals and it was a truly collaborative exchange. The final product was a Resume that shows me as the most qualified candidate for both graduate school and future employment. I am very satisfied with their help in my new journey. Thank you.

Can't say enough good things about Gary and his program! My son had taken the ACT test multiple times with no real change in his score. We decided kind of last minute to try Socrates tutoring. After only 3 weeks of tutoring, my son raised his score by 5 points! A true testament to this program! Thank you, Gary and Pam!

The quality of the tutoring was top notch that is why we bought a few too many tutoring sessions but they immediately refunded us a couple of hours promptly, with no questions asked. I was very impressed with the service I received. I would not hesitate to recommend Arbor Tutors to all of my friends and family.

Mrs. Bolzan was very prepared. My son is an introvert in an extreme way, lol. No laughing matter. I liked her very much but wasn't sure as once again my son is very shy. By mid session he was opening up and showing himself more. He understood that she was respectful of his feelings, intelligent, kind, witty and pretty cool. They were laughing and talking by the end. He was eager to learn more with her and couldn't stop talking about the fact that Mrs. Bolzan knows Kungfu! He studies Isshinryu Karate. They have much in common. I plan to continue to have my son meet with her. He learned and had handouts to take home. She was quickly able to begin assessing his needs as his tutoring is for enrichment purposes.

"A patient, intuitive and smart tutor who really connects with me" Sandeep is an expert. He exceeded my expectations. If you want the best and if you want the best results, go with Sandeep. Sandeep is an excellent tutor. He was extremely thorough and quickly found my weaknesses. he was extremely valuable when he focused on my weak points and we worked together to improve them. He also helped me write, edit and proofread my college applications, essays, resume and cover letter. I had a wonderful experience with Sandeep. I really enjoyed my sessions with him. He is brilliant and he connected with and engaged me and truly made SAT prep fun and positive for me. I was also looking for someone to help me write my personal statement for my college apps and to polish up my cover letter and resume. I was looking for someone with excellent writing skills. Sandeep knows how to how to present my strengths in my essays and applications. I also worked with Sandeep remotely for a while (phone, emails & fax) and that saved a lot of time. Since Sandeep's rate is on the higher side, I did not work with him initially, but after working with him, I know he's totally worth it. Having worked with other tutors in the past, I can say that Sandeep is the tutor and writer you need if you are looking for the best. Don't wait.

I’ve taken my SATs a couple of times and although I am not a bad student, I just felt that I could have done better, I knew it inside, but just could not find where it was. I got the Getting Into The Ivys tutoring program and worked with a Chelsea tutor. What I really like about my tutor is that she’s a qualified teacher and is professional and knows how to actually teach concepts properly. I really did not want to take any chances. Going to university is very important to me and my family. Susan my tutor developed a special study plan just for me, which helped me focus on my key weaknesses, without feeling de-motivated, in-fact I was so enthused by her, I actually looked forward to all my sessions. She is a brilliant tutor and I am so very grateful. I was able to increase my composite core by 100. I am very pleased.

Dr. Fikar is extremely knowledgeable of the SAT and Subject tests, quite detailed with his approach and study materials, and patient with his teaching. While my son has yet to take the exam, I feel confident with Dr. Fikar guiding him toward the test date. Yes, he is expensive, but I believe the sessions will be well worth it. Highly recommended.

About

I am a certified special education teacher for grades EC-12. I have experience tutoring students from 3 years old to master's candidates. My education has taught me to break down information to any level and make it understandable. Contact me for more details. I look forward to working with you!

About

I am an experienced tutor to help middle school and high school students succeed in their Math classes and standardized tests. SAT and ACT Math prep are also available. Mathematics skills are like muscles and need exercise to improve. I strongly believe students must devote time and energy to working on problems in order to succeed in their Math classes and on standardized tests. A tutor is not a substitute for a student putting in the Math work. My role as a tutor is to present Math principles, terms and techniques then guide the student over the rocky spots.

About

3 Things That Set Miss Gabby's Private Tutoring Apart. One. Did you know that most large tutoring companies send tutors out based on capacity and availability, NOT areas of expertise? Wouldn't you feel confident in knowing that your child, struggling with fractions, is receiving tutoring from a person who majored in a math related field? I am incredibly selective with the tutors I use and hyper vigilant with where I place them. I pair my clients up according to their tailored NEEDS. Two. My clients' success is my number one priority, always. I encourage all clients to feel 100% open and honest with me. What does that mean for you? If you have any questions or concerns regarding the services you receive, please reach out to me so I can personally provide a solution for you. Three. I make it a point to keep tutoring rates affordable for everyone. Most tutoring companies in Houston easily charge upwards of $65 per hour for tutoring. Ensuring that you or your child is up to speed in class shouldn't break the bank. I'm proud to be able to provide customized tutoring at affordable rates for everyone because I believe that everyone should have a fair chance at a successful academic career. It shouldn't be determined or hindered by finances.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you study for the SAT?

Your SAT prep strategy can mean the difference between a great score and a mediocre score, as well as the difference between being accepted to or rejected by your school of choice. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is a college entrance exam that measures a student’s knowledge and understanding of what they have learned up to this point in school and what they need to succeed in college. In addition to arming students with the knowledge they need to excel in the math, reading and writing components of the test, SAT prep can help improve scores by teaching students crucial strategies for taking the test itself. Professional SAT prep tutors can work with students one-on-one or in group sessions. Typically, tutors recommend that students who are comfortable and caught up with their regular schooling begin SAT prep at least three months before the test. If you’re targeting an elite school, six months before the test is a good time to begin. Students who are behind in school are advised to start early to ensure they’re caught up and feeling confident in all the relevant subjects. Suggestions for long-term SAT prep include taking challenging high school courses, completing all homework assignments, preparing for class tests and quizzes, and participating in class by asking and answering questions. There are free SAT prep training tools online; for those who’d like a one-on-one tutor to take them to the next level, the national average rate is $70 per hour.

When should you start preparing for the SAT?

It’s never too early to start preparing for college entrance exams, but professional tutors recommend a baseline of at least three months before the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is the gold standard for college admissions, and SAT prep is important for doing well. Your child’s SAT scores will have a major effect on which colleges send acceptance letters. Professional tutors can work with your kids to coach them on how to take the SAT, as well as studying the actual academic content. Doing well on the SAT is as much about knowing the right test-taking strategies as about having a firm grasp of the subject matter.

To understand your student’s readiness for the SAT, they can take the pre-SAT (PSAT) starting in their sophomore year. SAT prep can be structured around the student’s PSAT scores, so tutors can address any challenges and weak subject areas. If your child has their sights set on an Ivy League or elite school, SAT prep with a tutor or study program should start at least six months before the test. Vocabulary is a key element of the student’s SAT preparation and success. The national average rate for SAT prep tutoring is $70 per hour.

What is in the SAT test?

As your child is preparing for the SAT, it’s helpful to know the specifics of the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is made up of three main categories and one optional essay. Students have a total of three hours to take the test, with an additional 50 minutes for the optional essay. In total, there are 154 questions. During SAT prep, it’s helpful to take timed practice exams to understand how you’ll do during the actual test. Here is a brief overview of each of the four categories:

  • Reading: 65 minutes with 52 questions. The Reading test measures command of evidence, words in context, analysis in history and social studies, and analysis in science.
  • Writing and Language: 35 minutes with 44 questions. The Writing and Language test covers the same topics as Reading, as well as expression of ideas and standard English conventions.
  • Math: 80 minutes with 58 questions. The Math test looks at the student’s understanding of algebra, problem-solving and data analysis, and advanced math in the context of fluency, conceptual understanding, and applications.
  • Essay (optional): 50 minutes with 1 essay. The essay will demonstrate the student’s competency with writing, analysis and reading.
