Charles was fantastic! He did a great job of getting the pictures I wanted to represent my business. Not even being familiar with the work I do, he was able to make suggestions to get the photos to really tell the story for me. He accomodated my hectic schedule and I got my pictures back faster than I had even hoped. He was friendly and professional and very reasonably priced. I will definitely book with him again for future projects! Thank you Charles!

"I took the tutoring sessions online. It was really easy to register and helped improve my SAT score. The tutoring sessions are comprehensive and helpful information for the SAT is given to you as homework as well. The study books provided all of the extensive information required to perform sufficiently on the SAT exam. I am planning on taking the test in a couple of months and hoping my scores go up a lot."

Joel designed a book cover for our current writing project, including the full jacket and interior design. What has impressed us most is his eye for cutting-edge, yet simple, design, and his ear to hear what we think we want and interpret that to the page. He is not a design-snob. You'll find Joel to be very talented, yet easy to work with, professional, and timely.

I have worked with Phat Armadillo numerous times over the years. Clinton is a master of his craft. A true "Go Getter". Clinton did my first music video in 2002. After that I did all my business with Phat Armadillo. If it was a music videos, commercials, promo spots, industrial films, editing, post production, v/o work or political campaigns that I enjoyed working on was with Phat Armadillo productions. Phat Armadillo Productions is always my first choice for every one of my media productions and I have introduced many others to Phat Armadillo like George Clinton and The All Funk Radio show as well as many others. All who have reported to me that Phat Armadillo always did an amazing job.

Debbie was very professional in her approach to handling my book. She also provided a soothing voice which is helpful since this was my first book. She was prompt with her responses and got my material back to me in a timely manner. This is what an editor should be.

About

I mentor writers at any age: new writers developing their craft, and writers who have completed a book and could use ongoing advice on the business side of being an author, and finding the proper channels to publish and market your book. As a self-publisher, I wrote and published an award-winning novel, Shadows in the Mist, that won a gold medal in the 2007 IPPY Awards. I later sold that book to a NY publisher and a German publisher. I recently negotiated a book deal for my second novel, Dead of Winter (due out October 2011). I am currently at work on two books, my third novel, Skinners, and a non-fiction historical book that I am ghostwriting for a client. For anyone interested in working with me over several sessions to improve your book and your career as an author, contact me and we can discuss a rate. To contact me today.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

  • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
  • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
  • Expertise in your target area.
  • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

  • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
  • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
