When my scheduled movers did not show after several hours of "we are on the way' back and forth, I sent out a desperate plea on a Saturday night looking for someone early on Sunday morning. Wilson offered a flat rate for my 3rd floor unloading job. Wilson and Anthony did a phenomenal job of unloading my truck that had a lot more heavy boxes of books than most people would dream of moving. They ran up and down the stairs for over 2 hours with a smile on their face. Although my original plan of having all day Sunday to unpack and organize before work on Monday did not work out as intended, Wilson and Anthony were able to help out during an potentially extremely stressful time. I'd recommend their moving services wholeheartedly.

Great overall experience! Movers were very professional, nice, and helpful throughout the process. Plus great before service on setting up time/logistics. Would use them again next time I'm moving between apartments. Pricing competitive with others, and helped make my move easier. No complaints.

I used Graceful Moves when moving apartments and I can't say enough great things about them! They showed up on time, wrapped up the furniture, and moved quickly. I've had movers work slowly before, trying to drag out the time, but not these guys! Despite their speed, nothing was broken or damaged. They were very professional and I highly recommend them.

Took great care in moving fragiles even though it added more time than expected. Originally quoted rate was upheld and we appreciated the extra effort and care to ensure not just the safety of our belongings but also to not scratch our walls and floors. Overall excellent service

This was my first experience hiring movers and after reading numerous reviews from several different companies, I was really apprehensive about hiring a moving service altogether. I must say though, that using Galactic Movers was a truly great experience from beginning to end. They were responsive to all of my questions prior to me scheduling my move and reassured me that they would do a great job and they did. My moving team was Felipe, George and Alex and they have to be some of the best movers in the city. They worked fast, they were accommodating, and were professional. They had to move all of my things down 3 flights of stairs to load into the truck and then up a staircase into the new place and they did so quickly without damaging anything. There were even a few pieces of furniture that had to be taken apart to fit through a narrow doorway of one of the bedrooms. And again they did so quickly and without damaging anything. I have already referred them to a friend moving soon and will definitely refer them every chance I get.

Very satisfied -- the two men were extremely fast, the trailer pulled by a truck was more than large enough, and they drove the 200 miles to my new home very carefully in some horrendous weather. I would definitely recommend their moving services as fast, economical, honest, and friendly.

I was looking for a handyman to help me move a 1 BR apt on Jul 28, 2018. Brady responded to my request with his quote. Then, I sent him pics of the furniture to moved, and a week before the move day, we talked over telephone. At that time, given his amazing reviews, he was first choice as a handyman to help me move. As the move day drew closer, for a couple of days, Brady stopped responding. This seemed to be strange as he had been very fast in responding to my text messages beforehand. So, I thought he was no longer interested and started looking for someone else. Then, a day before the move, he responded that he had been out of town. Given his amazing past reviews, as I needed a second handyman to help me move, I hired him as well. On the move day, he arrived on time and moved things cautiously yet efficiently. Regrettably, in our conversation, while he had indicated he had a moving Dolley and moving blankets, on the move day, he did not bring them. All the same, throughout the move, our interactions were pleasant and very friendly. Overall, I appreciated his work ethic and punctuality. Had Brady not have stopped responding to the texts while traveling and brought the moving Dolley and moving blankets, I would have totally given him 5 stars. All the same, moving is always a stressful experience but I was glad to have Brady by my side.

Our moving experience with Uriel Movers was excellent. They arrived on time, actually too early [1 hr earlier than the scheduled time] but they agreed to wait for us at no charge and worked with us till we were all done which consist of moving across town, loading and unloading 100 or so moving boxes and dissemble and assemble furniture between 2 stories. Our 3-men crew did a great job! - Thank you!

Two man crew that worked incredibly hard to get the job done. Very fair price. The apartment I was moving into was pretty complicated. The unloading spot was really inconvenient and involved an elevator ride plus a really long hallway. Neither of the guys complained, they just hustled even harder to get the job finished. Very very impressed.

Super nice people. I hired them to help load a u-haul as we were moving out of town. We should have had a slightly bigger truck but hard to know at the time. You always have more than you think you do. They did a great job getting as much stuff as possible into the truck. Only one negative and that is that they should have put sheets/blankets around the wood furniture (I did provide some). A few nicks and scratches but no major damage and so far I haven't found anything that was broken. They were very respectful of boxes I'd marked fragile which I greatly appreciated. I would hire again.

Mr. Betton and his crew were very polite, knowledgeable, hard-working, and above all, honest and professional. They arrived on time (a little early, actually), moved everything efficiently, didn't damage a single item, and completed the whole process in a timely manner. I was so impressed that I used Betton Moving for a second move, am about to hire them for a third (without even shopping the competition, because I know I'll get a fair quote and top-notch service), and I've referred them to all of my friends and relatives. This company truly deserves a 5-star rating.

I have seen the best and the worst in the moving business. After relocating 4 times in my life, my opinion is somewhat of an expertise. There are so many moving companies who do the job poorly. But there is one company who is at the other end of the spectrum. I have hired Pick Up Movers. They have always performed exceedingly well. I just want to say that I am vouching for the potency of this company and recommending everyone to hire this great moving service.

Moving across the country is stressful. Great Nation made things so much better. I read horror story after horror story about every moving company, scary. Finally, I just went with my gut, which was guiding me to Great Nation. I was afraid of standard things like items breaking or being charged way more than expected, but mostly I was nervous about my things arriving in a timely fashion so I could begin my new job and feel organized. I was picked up and delivered 3 days later. It was super fast and I was almost afraid they would get to New York before me. I would not hesitate to hire this company. My contract was spot on and I had zero issues, no damage, no scratches, no breaks! They take extreme care with wrapping all my furniture so I was very happy to see everything arrive in perfect condition

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
