Clinton did a great job with our water leak at Branch & Dhillon, P.C., after calling out a couple of other companies to fix the leak no one was able to fix it and Clinton and his team came out and got it done for us the same day!

After about 6 months of wondering what to do with this bathroom that the insurance company wouldn't cover because the floor was damaged due to water leakage under the bathtub and the tub had overflowed a few times. I had Billy come out and look at it, had someone else come out and look at it, a friend come out and look at it, and the prices varied. After reading some of the reviews, I determined he was honest and would do a good job, especially since my wife is really picky. The job was supposed to be two weeks but it was less. Billy was nice, considerate, and not at all as described in some of the reviews. But I guess all that is just perception. He takes responsibility for his folks coming into the home and wants to make sure his guys do a good job. I've got a lot of work to do on this place and I will hire him again.

Mitchell replaced two of my bathtubs, along with the faucets, drains and shower heads. He replaced the existing Sheetrock with concrete backer board, to make sure his work would last a lifetime. Then tiled them both beautifully, and even cut a window into one. A couple saw him cutting tile out front, then stopped by a few days later asking if the house was for rent. We showed them the house and new bathrooms and they put the deposit down that day. We never even put a For Rent sign in the yard. He also finished everything in the time expected and couldn't have done a better job. Not to mention he was very nice and professional. I highly recommend him to anyone for home remodels and/or repairs.

I hired Hackett Plbg. because after having an inspection done on my home I had several plumbing issues. I had Jeff come out and find source of master bathroom leak and check all other plumbing issues. He was very friendly and professional. He ran a series of tests in my master bath to find the source of the leak, which required him to remove a wood panel on my bathtub which he patiently did so and sure enough it was literally raining in my living room. I was so glad to have had Mr. Hackett come out and find the source of my leaks and provide a price quote for the repairs.

We had Crab do several small projects before moving into our brand new house & they did an excellent job! They replaced toilets, worked in our attic to fix exhaust pipes and repaired a bathtub faucet. They were professional and were willing to go to Home Depot several times for things they needed to finish the jobs and we really appreciated that. Also, they were tidy and cleaned up any mess they left which is great. We were very happy with the work they did and we'll definitely use them again!!

How lucky are my wife and I to have found Cesar. We have many good things to say about Cesar beginning with he is an expert craftsman and a perfectionist. We were looking for a contractor to remodel our master bathroom, which included extensive demolition, moving the shower, installing a larger bathtub, rerouting the plumbing under the concrete slab, all new marble tile (floor and walls), new marble counter tops, a new bath cabinet, texturing walls, installing a frame less glass shower enclosure, painting (he had to paint the bathroom twice because of a poor color choice). During the process of doing the above remodel, we decided that 2 upstairs bathrooms needed new floor tile which Cesar also did for us. Additionally, we had new granite installed in our kitchen and we asked Cesar to install the limestone backsplash for us. Cesar contracted for us to have a spice cabinet built to enclose the exposed side of the refrigerator, which turned out spectacular. I cannot say enough good about Cesar and his work ethic. He is extremely honest, very thorough, extremely respectful of you and your property. Cesar knows what he is doing and he does not take shortcuts to get the job done, you can be sure that he will do the job the right way. During the time he spent in our home, Cesar and his great colleague Ozzie (Oswaldo) became part of the family. When the job was done we felt like he was moving out. Sort of sad to see them go. Cesar and Ozzie will do well because they make a great team, they are very honest, and they have a superior work ethic, and a talent for remodeling. Above it all, we found Cesar to price his labor very reasonably. For our job, he presented us with the actual invoices for all materials without markup. Rest assured that should we need work done around our new home, we will be calling Cesar and Ozzie back again. Good luck to you Cesar and Ozzie. You deserve all the best!

I hired Manny to do a last minute paint job on a rental property. I live in DC, so needed to give him lots of directions via telephone and text message. I originally thought it was only a touch-up job but after getting his professional opinion, I agreed to go with a full paint. There was patch-work that also needed to be done and he also suggested that he could do some bathtub work, which saved me an additional vendor call. I really appreciate the friendliness, professionalism, and timeliness of Manny and his crew. There was no last minute haggling over hidden charges. He was very upfront with his costs from the beginning. When I arrived to Dallas to inspect the work, everything was mostly great. There were a few additional touch-ups that were needed and the crew came back, before I left Dallas to finish the final touch-ups. I was able to get the place turned-over for the new tenant very quickly. I am very grateful to Manny.

My bathroom was really ugly and dysfunctional, with a big hole exposing the plumbing in the bathtub and broken vanity drawers that fell out when opened. After 31 years and being home to a family of 5, it was in dire need of a complete remodel. We had spent two years getting estimates, but they were all so high, we just couldn’t afford to have the work done. The companies we contacted offered no options and didn’t even seem interested in working on such a small project. Needless to say, I was discouraged. From the minute we walked into Watson Tile and Stone, it was different. We met Patsy and her husband and Angie and Ed. They were friendly and positive. The day, Ed came to our home to measure and give an estimate. I was embarrassed to even show him the bathroom, but he was so reassuring and gave me the opinion that my ideas were achievable and my small bathroom project was important. We found their estimate reasonable, and entered an agreement to have the work done. Two and a half weeks later, I couldn’t believe the transformation that had taken place in that bathroom. From the initial tear down, to the last screw put into place, the job was done by professional craftsmen, who took pride in their work, cared about our property and exceeded our expectations. The room is beautiful and I love it. Watson Tile and Stone and their skilled craftsmen delivered exactly what they promised and even more. They did it with the personal touch of people who care. Thank you Patsy and Angie for helping me pick colors, tile and granite and for always responding when I had questions or wanted to add something to the project. Thank you Hosea and Cirilo for the beautiful texture and paint; it really looks nice. The custom cabinets and granite are wonderful and look fantastic. I can’t even find words to thank James for all he did throughout the project and even afterwards. He is creative and skilled in so many aspects of his craft, but is outstanding in his attention to detail and customer satisfaction. He and his son, Jacob are a great team. That was last year, July 2010. In October 2011, I called Watson Tile and Stone and asked if they would be interested in doing our other bathroom. They agreed and I told Patsy I wanted it to be just like the first one with the same tile, granite, fixtures and etc. I also asked if the same craftsmen might be available to do the work. Now it’s finished and decorated and even more beautiful than our first project. No more ugly bathrooms in this house. We had the same level of support and the same professional craftsmen on our second project. We are VERY happy and appreciative customers. Thank you Watson Tile and Stone. Don’t be surprised if the phone rings again next year.

Nathan and his crew came in and floored our house with laminate. They did an outstanding job. Based on their work on the flooring, we also had them come in and re-tile our bathtub and texturize our bathroom walls. My husband and I couldn't be happier with the results, and we have received many compliments on the floor and bathtub. We will use Nathan's company again for future projects.

Collin truly saved the day here. He came out on short notice, when another guy totally failed to show without calling. My wife's wheelchair accessible shower leaked (bad tile job) into the walls and needed to be fixed. He came out (way out, we live rural), sprayed it and now I have no more worries about leaks. thanks Collin, amazing job.

Rytaki Renovations did our bathroom remodel. They did our shower, bathtub, granite counter tops and trim, they also painted. Me and my wife are more than happy! We also like the fact that it is a veteran owned business. They were very professional and clean. They would not leave their stuff laying around they picked up everyday when they were done. We almost got bite in the butt we did request others off the internet and went with them because we were in a hurry but their price changed once they came to the house and saw the project. Rytaki Renovations did ask to come to our location and get measurements before they would quote. They were very professional and had a quote to me quick and started the next day. I would highly recommend this company they do good work. I already have been quoted and ready to do my patio when I have the time and money with them. All around good people.

My husband hired Geneva through a personal reference of his to get our master bath retreat redone on a 10 year old house we'd just purchased. The bathtub was old, etc. but it was a great space in general. She came to my home and we discussed what I wanted the end result to look like. Geneva asked many questions and showed me options, we talked about the work, the family's schedule! - most of this was email, etc as requested. The soaker I originally wanted wouldn't have fit - which I didn't realize to check for! So that would've been time and money wasted. I highly recommend Geneva for anyone's home. Thank you for taking my safety, my time, and my bottom line to heart. This was definitely a superior experience and I'm calling you for sure when we get ready to do the kitchen!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

    • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
    • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
    • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
    • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
    • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

For more on where to start when remodeling a bathroom check out The Complete Thumbtack Bathroom Remodel Guide.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

For more on how long a bathroom remodel should take check out The Complete Thumbtack Bathroom Remodel Guide.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

    • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
    • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
      • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
    • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
    • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
    • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.

For more on how to remodel a bathroom, what it costs to remodel a bathroom, what bathroom brands to consider and more check out The Complete Thumbtack Bathroom Remodel Guide.

    Who remodels bathrooms?

The professional best equipped to handle bathroom remodeling is a general contractor. A general contractor is typically licensed by the state or region in which they work to carry out home remodeling projects. To receive licensing, they must generally demonstrate their knowledge of construction and building and safety codes. General contractors act as the organizer for the entire bathroom remodeling project, ensuring that each element (new tile, shower pan replacement, lighting installation, etc.) is completed at the appropriate time by the proper contractor. Before hiring a general contractor, it’s wise to do your research. In addition to getting several competitive bids, here are questions to ask:

    • May I see before-and-after photos of some of your recent bathroom remodels?
    • Will I need permits for this project? Do you apply for those?
    • May I see proof of insurance and licenses?
    • Can we have a written contract outlining scope of work, budget and timeline?
    • Will you be here each day overseeing the work?
