She worked efficiently and made packing seem less daunting! Had a positive attitude, and even let our puppy "help" her.

Shawna is incredible. I had a sudden personal injury that left me incapable of properly caring for my 14 year old lab with hip dysplasia. I had to transport both he and my 11 year old lab to board at my vet and Shawna did not hesitate to help and immediately put me at ease. She was very caring and professional during a difficult time. She has since been transporting my 11 year old lab to water therapy as well as pet sitting for him and our cat. She is always on time and responsive to texts. She provides easy pay options with Venmo, emails at each interaction and detailed follow up reports. I'm very happy with her service and feel lucky to have found her. I couldn't more highly recommend her.

Andrea pet sat for us while we went to Arkansas. We can't express enough what an "outstanding" service she provides. She cared for our 19 year old male Border Collie and 2 cats, one 14 year old female and a 2 1/2 year old male. Our pets took to Andrea right away, making us realize that she has a way with animals which made both them and us feel at ease. We knew immediately that everyone would be in good hands. Andrea fed, spent time with our animals, took them out as needed, cleaned the litter box and bowls, texted us with updates and pictures and even brought in the mail and newspaper, watered our plants and vegetable garden. She even VACUUMED the house ! What more could a pet owner ask for ? Please don't waste your time looking for someone other than Andrea. We highly recommend Andrea Rutledge Pet Sitting and look forward to working with her again the future. She's the best !

It is very difficult to find a skilled, competent pet sitter for four senior cats. The oldest one requires on-going medical care. Debra was perfect. She has the skills and knowledge. She communicated with me on an on-going basis to keep me updated about their eating and typical lack of friendliness with strangers. My oldest received her required meds according to the instructions. They did like her in their own aloof ways! I felt relieved when I knew a competent person was caring for my pets while I was away. Debra has the background, knowledge and skills to care for pets which require special care. I will definitely contact Debra for future pet sitting of my beloved cats.

We had a bit of an emergency where I was planning to go out of town and my husband had a work commitment in California. We were able to set the pet sitting up quickly and our pets did well. We have not had anyone look after them other than ourselves in several years so this was an important step for us.

Dixie did a fabulous job taking care of our Yorkie while we went out of town for 5 days. Our pup got sick while we were out and she took care of the house and carpets and let us know she wasn't feeling well promptly. She also brought in our mail and alternated lights to appear as though we were home. I feel like Dixie truly cares about our puppy Lexi, and our Lexi loves Dixie! Will certainly use her again in the future. Highly recommend her!

By far the best when it comes to exotic boarding. I was nervous about leaving my sulcata tortoise, Jane, while I was gone for a week but I was reassured that she would be well taken care of by someone with experience taking care of exotics. Sure enough I came back to a happy and healthy tortoise. I will definitely be using again to board Jane and will keep them in mind for pet sitting my dogs too! Thanks for taking care of Jane!

Kathy is fantastic, and so easy to work with. This was the first time my dog has ever been professionally groomed, and she took her time with him. He looks and smells amazing, and his coat feels like it did when he was a puppy. I look forward to working with Kathy again. She really is exceptional.

Jenna did a great job communicating prior to the pet sit, throughout my trip and even checked in after my return. She sent pictures of our "child" Kyra. She preformed all tasks asked of her regarding feeding, changing lights and bringing in mail. She even did a poo pick up. She did arrive a little late at one visit, but it was due to an incident on 75, but she let us know right away. We will certainly be using Jenna again.

I was nervous about leaving my cat and dog. I asked Ruth to come the day before to meet my "babies" . I never know how they will react to people. My dog immediately liked them (Ruth and her husband) and went to give them his version of a hug. Before they left I gave Ruth a hug too. We just got home from our trip and Ruth has done an exemplary job of taking care of our babies. Thank You Ruth, you can be sure we will be asking you to take care of them on our next trip too.

Sherri is awesome! She is an animal lover and very caring and loving to my 2 babies! She is always there to help any time I call her. Sherri and I have known each other for many years. She is very trustworthy and responsible. I have referred her to many of my friends for pet sitting and everyone has always been so pleased with her. If you want someone to care for your pets the way you do when you're out of town then you need to contact Sherri to take care of your babies. It would be hard for me to trust anyone else other than Sherri to take care of my babies while I'm away. She takes her job seriously and absolutely loves what she does.

I used Beth Burch with Maggie May's to come to my house and dog sit my two dogs for six days. One is a female puppy that weighs 80 lbs., and the other is a grouchy older male that weighs 4 lbs. She first came the day before we left, to meet them and learn their routine. While we were gone, she came twice a day, walked them, fed and watered them, and took pictures to text me from each of her visits. I came home to happy dogs and a clean house. Her rate is very reasonable for her excellent service, and she is so sweet too! We are grateful to have found Beth as a resource and will use her again!

Ryan has been absolutely amazing with our new puppy. First, he was willing to drive up to Westchester from his home, which we are so grateful for. He spent quality time with him every day for about 3 weeks. We included us in his training so we could continue training after he left. Ryan would take him to the park or to the store to train him in different environments. The results have been great. We still need to continue using the skills we learned, but it's like we have a totally different dog. Everyone tells us how well behaved he is for a 5 month old puppy. 10 Stars!!

Laura was wonderful for our furfamily. She took wonderful care of our dog, cat, guinea pig, fish and special needs foster dog. She communicated with me after almost every visit (3x a day) and sent pics frequently. Her rates were very reasonable as well. And she went above and beyond when our foster dog broke out of his kennel (he tore it apart) and made a mess. We're thrilled with her and will be happy to use her again.

Jennifer did exactly as she promised and then some! She was prompt in her arrival (*we have a Ring door bell that noted her entrance/exit times) and spent a lot of quality time with my cat! I received a text message w/ photo as discussed and to my surprise, a "report card" of how my kitty did while I was gone. (Yay for an A+!) I will definitely plan on hiring her in the future and recommend that everyone needing quality pet sitting services consider her for their future plans!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hire a house sitter?

House-sitting can be a lifesaver when you’re leaving town for any length of time. Whether you work remotely, you’re taking a much-needed vacation, or you just want to road-trip for a few days, it’s wise to have a pro keep an eye on your house and pets while you’re gone. Your home is more likely to stay safe and you won’t have to wrangle the kitty into a kennel to travel with you. The national average pet-sitting price ranges between $20 and $30. Pet-sitting and house-sitting costs will vary based on where you live in the country and regional labor rates. Another factor in cost is how long you want the house-sitter to stay. Some people prefer to have the house-sitter stay the night at their house, perhaps to care for an elderly pet or simply to keep a watchful eye on the home at all times. Overnight stays will cost more, ranging anywhere from $50 to $100, depending on services provided. For day visits, house-sitting and pet-sitting prices will increase incrementally the longer the visit and the more service you want performed. For example, a quick 10-minute visit to feed and walk the pet and bring in the mail could be $12.50, a 25-minute visit could be $18, a 40-minute visit $25, and a 50-minute visit $32. How much should you pay for a pet sitter?

Pet sitting provides your precious pet with in-home care. A pet-sitter can make a brief visit during the day to provide snacks, playtime or affection, or stay at your house for one or more nights to tend to your pet. Prices for pet-sitting will vary based on length of the visit. Nationally, pet sitting prices range from $20 to $30, although prices run higher for your sitter to stay the night. Prices will also be affected by where you live in the country. Here are some examples of average pet-sitting prices based on length of time and region:

  • 30-minute visit: $17 in a small Texas town.
  • 30-minute visit: $25 in Southern California.
    • 45-minute visit: $28.
    • 60-minute visit: $32.
  • Overnight stay (10 hours): $50 in Texas.
  • Overnight stay (10 hours): $85 in Southern California.
    • 12 hours: $100.
    • 24 hours: $200. This is a good option for a sick, elderly or brand-new pet that needs constant supervision.
