Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I choose the best long-distance moving company in Houston?

To find the best long-distance moving companies in Houston, look for a company that can manage the sweltering heat of the Houston area. They should also have experience and a strong reputation. Read their reviews and double-check their references to ensure you’re not hiring long-distance movers with a history of leaving unhappy customers in their wake.

In order to operate legally within Houston, they need to be licensed with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles.

After you’ve identified the most qualified long-distance movers for your move, reach out to all of them. Give them details about your upcoming, and ask for several estimates before hiring a long-distance mover.

How much does it cost to move across the country from Houston?

The price you’ll pay to move across the country from Houston will depend on how the moving company decides to calculate the price. For example, moving from Houston to Seattle or moving from Houston to Chicago might be a little less than moving from Houston to Boston because of the shorter trip.

Contact the top movers in Houston to get a personalized estimate for your cross-country move.

What is considered a long-distance move in Houston?

A long-distance move is generally a move of a least 100 miles, though some companies may classify long-distance moves as 400 miles or more.

Many out-of-state moves are considered long-distance moves, but it’s possible to move long-distance within one state — especially Texas because of its size. Some examples of long-distance moves from Houston are:

  • Moving from Houston to Dallas
  • Moving from Houston to Austin
  • Moving from Houston to San Antonio

Moving to popular, out-of-state cities like Chicago, Seattle, Atlanta, New York and Denver are also considered long-distance moves.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

What is considered a local move vs. a long-distance move?

Local moves are among the most common moves. Unlike a long-distance move, a local move is typically less than 50 miles and does not cross state lines. Generally, a local move only takes one day, and movers tend to charge by the hour.

The definition of a long-distance move may vary depending on the moving company. Generally, a long-distance considered to be any move of 400 miles or more. However, some say a long-distance move is over 50-100 miles.

Local Move

A move under 50 miles

Long-Distance Move

A move over 50-100 miles or over 400 miles; may also be called an “interstate move” or “out-of-state move”

Out-of-State Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “interstate move” or “long-distance move”

Interstate Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “out-of-state move” or “long-distance move”

Intrastate Move

A move that begins and ends in the same state, typically beyond 50 miles

Interstate moves require additional legal preparation and will incur additional costs for distance, the amount and weight of your items, the preparation required and various other factors. Moving companies tend to do an initial weighing of the truck, which you should be present for.

A move that crosses state lines is considered an interstate move or an out-of-state move. Contrast this with an intrastate move, which begins and ends in the same state, but is typically above 50 miles.

To determine whether your move is local or long-distance, contact the best movers in your area.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

How many movers should I hire for my long-distance move?

To figure out how many movers you need, take the size of your home, the number of items you need to move and the weight of those items to estimate how many movers you might need.

For example, a studio or one-bedroom apartment might take two movers to load and unload your belongings efficiently. A two- or three-bedroom home might require three or more movers. And a three- or four-bedroom house might require four movers.

Ask moving companies in your area how many movers — and how many hours — it may take to complete your long-distance move.

What is the cheapest way to move long distance?

The cheapest way to move long distance is to plan ahead. This allows you to capitalize on several money-saving strategies. For example, you may consider renting a portable moving container. These are often cheaper than moving trucks, though moving truck rentals are a great option for moderately sized homes.

Planning ahead also gives you time to start looking around for free moving boxes and supplies. You might also be able to snag discounts from moving companies if you book far out in advance and ask movers for a deal. Try not to move during the peak season (spring or summer), as prices tend to be highest during that time.

Contact the best long-distance movers in your area to get free estimates and figure out a way to save money.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

I was skeptical about hiring long distance movers on Thumbtack, but I’m so glad I hired A-Star Movers. Carlos was incredibly responsive as soon as I messaged him. I appreciate how accommodating and communicative he was through the entire process. Although they were a bit late for the loading, they let me know what was going on. They packed my stuff with such care, wrapped all my furniture, loaded everything well, and then unloaded in Chicago with such expediency. They even set up my bed. I would not hesitate to hire them again and will likely do so if and when I move long distance again. Thank you so much for making such a stressful thing so simple and easy. Cannot express my gratitude enough! Thank you!

Long distance move from Houston to New Orleans. I was already in New Orleans and needed them to move all of my things from storage in Houston. These guys are trustworthy, honest and very professional. They made it in great time and were quick to get my things in the new place. I had a lot of antique furniture to move and it was all wrapped up nicely. I HIGHLY recommended Carlos and his team. They made the move super easy!

I must say that I do not usually do reviews, but I feel that these guys really deserve one. My move was a long distance move everything started off great they were on time and really got everything loaded and ready to go in a timely manor. The issue came on delivery of the items to the Storage. Now the issue was not A-Star's fault it was more on the Storage facility. But never the less they guys hung around for at least an additional hour of so until the Storage facility could actually get me into a unit. So I would definitely recommend and reuse A-Star Movers!

I recently moved from Texas to Maryland (household and car), and I can truly say that using A-Star Movers was a complete BLESSING! My main contact was the owner, Carlos, and he was so professional, personable, and respectful in all of our dealings. I was very pleased that he agreed to do an initial in-home inspection, which is the best way to get an accurate quote of your move. After our meeting and receiving the quote, Carlos didn't come back later to try and "price gauge" (i.e. add additional costs). He was honest and fair throughout the whole process...AND he got my items to me both safely and in the time he originally stated. A long distance move is already a bit stressful, but Carlos (& team) made this a great transition and experience for me. The cost was VERY reasonable (believe me: I'd researched and received other quotes prior to hiring A-Star Movers). They were gentle/careful with my items, This is the moving company to go with. As I shared with Carlos, people are so quick to complain these days but not use the same energy to share positive feedback/compliments. Thus, I am very pleased to take the time to write about this great experience.

Carlos and his team were excellent to work with. Extremely professional and flexible. I had a long-distance move from Houston to the New Orleans area and his team was a lifesaver. Carlos offered an early load-up the night before so we could get on the road sooner. The guys came back the next morning to load up my bed and few remaining things. I added a stop along the way to pick up a bedroom set at my parents' house and the guys were skilled at playing "tetris" to fit everything in the truck. The guys were good about pointing out any existing damage to my stuff so that I was aware and they were careful not to cause any damage during the move. With everything, my price never changed from my initial quote from Carlos, which I appreciated. They could have nickle and dimed me for the extra trips and stops, but they didn't. I highly recommend these guys and if I ever move again I might even see if they would be willing to drive over to Louisiana to move me. They are hard workers and easily the best value I found, hands-down.
