Very nice work done and I will be using them again when the need arises. They did painting, cleaning, carpet steaming, and other general make-ready services for a rental property.

We hired M. Gourault for a leak repair that required problem-solving, scaling heights and ingenuity. Upon our first conversation, I came away impressed with his knowledge and ability to explain matters in a way that I could understand. Mr. Gourault uncovered the source of the leak (damaged caulking from an exterior fan vent) after checking the windows, attic and gutter. It was repaired along with the damage to the window to look as good as new. He even cleaned another fan vent clogged by lint and properly secured it to the wall. Throughout, Mr. Gourault provided cost effective suggestions to fix up our property. As a bonus, we were able to conduct our business together entirely in French - customer service is certainly a strength. I would recommend Mr. Gourault without hesitation for general home repairs and look forward to working with him again.

Will contacted me within minutes of my post. He came to my house on a Sunday afternoon to give me a final price. He had already given me an estimate over the phone. He brought samples to the house for my wife to choose from. The deal was done in about 30 minutes. I have worked as a contractor for years in the past. I recognized that Will had the ability to handle a lot of things going on at once. I let him know I understood what he has to deal with and that I had a lot of respect for contractors who could juggle things like I seen he has to do. My assessment of W.C. Granite works is based on all aspects of the experience. Last of which is going to be the installation of the granite. My wife and I felt comfortable with the crew he sent. They were very proficient at what they were doing. They were careful around the house. They communicated well with us. I had an immediate sense of trust towards them. The next time I have Granite work to do I will be calling Will for sure.

Donovan is very good. What I like most about Donovan is that he always makes things right and isn't one of those contractors who tries to nickel and dime his clients. When my plumbers messed up and brought me a broken tub from Lowes, he drove to two different stores to return it for me and then pick up the new one. Bottom line, he tiled an entire bathroom for me and did a good enough job that we threw several other projects his way. I'm going to continue using Donovan and you should too.

Had a contractor start on a job that was postponed by the contractor twice after it was started, got rid of him. Called Zach and he started right away, fixed some issues that were left behind from the same guy. I am having him do another job.

FANTASTIC BATHROOM RENOVATION Jeremy and Oliver did an amazing job from start to finish for our master bathroom remodel. At the proposal phase of the project, Oliver provided 3D models of the renovation to give us a realistic idea of the final product. He was also mindful of our budget and provided multiple price options for consideration. As the building materials and fixtures were selected, Jeremy and Oliver reviewed all specifications to ensure compatibility and completeness so once the project started, there would be not delays due to materials. The also used high quality materials, especially the cabinets which were constructed from solid wood, elegantly painted and included soft-close drawers. Once the project got started, Jeremy and the various sub-contractors will all very respectful, arrived on time and cleaned up at the end of each day. All the work was done with excellent craftsmanship and attention to detail. There were a couple of times minor issue were identified and they were quickly fixed the following day. Throughout the process, both Jeremy and Oliver were responsive via e-mail and text letting us know what was happening each day and answering any questions we had. As we got to know them over the number of weeks, it was clear they loved what they did and took pride in the quality of the work. We are extremely happy with working with Twelve 12, not just for how beautiful our renovation turned out but the peace of mind that the Oliver and Jeremy would do everything to make sure we were 100% satisfied.

Mr. Nazario and his team did an excellent job for our post construction deep cleaning. Our retail store General Contactor did not do a thorough cleaning and we knew we'd have to get a professional cleaning before our store opening, and we're glad we chose Navidabra Management. The company was also very flexible with scheduling timings, as we needed a late evening cleaning and they had no issues accommodating. Thanks Navidabra!

Wes was a contractor I used who came in and installed a deck for me I purchased from Lowe's. I had trouble with Lowe's with my timeframe and getting someone out here, but once I got Wes' number he was easy to contact, he worked around my schedule, got the job finished quickly, efficiently, and everything was clean - there were no materials leftover. The job was done great. Wes even called back later to check if the job was done correctly and checked up every 6 months since then! I highly recommend him for any contract work and he did a great job.

The search for a general contractor was a long process for me. I had never gone through a home repair that I couldn't take care of myself but this was far more than what my capabilities were. I reached out to several websites and posted what work I needed done and I had over 10 interested contractors that wanted to bid on the job. Along came David with Platinum Construction, a guy with a dream and a vision of starting his own business. He had worked in the industry of home building for years but was just starting to venture out on his own. After many meetings and phone calls with David on my needs I was still a bit hesitant to choose him for the work because I would literally be his first client. After comparing bids with the other contractors, David was very competitive with the others, not the lowest but right in the middle of the pack. I was down to three to choose from and was getting really tired of looking at the gaping hole in my kitchen ceiling and ultimately just felt my gut telling me to go with the new guy to the general contractor arena while my brain and all the advice in the world tells you that you don't want to pick the guy with no jobs under his belt. I am very happy I went with my gut. David was just the guy I needed for this job. The work started on the time that we agreed upon and finished within the time frame we had discussed even know mother nature decided that she wanted to drop over 12 inches of rain on us in two days. David's attention to detail and his support throughout this project put all my concerns about picking the new guy to rest. He came in and did an amazing job under adverse weather conditions and got it done on time. My house looks and feels brand new again. I no longer need to worry about searching for a contractor in the future if I need more work done. I can make one phone call and get the work going shortly after that. I will certainly be a return client to David and Platinum Construction.

They created a lovely bathroom with a beautiful tiled shower in a space that has many difficult angles on the walls and ceiling. I had three other contractors tell me they could not build a workable shower in the bathroom due to the constraints of the space. Their workmanship is excellent. They produced a very high-quality bathroom on-time and within my budget. The bathroom has truly exceeded my expectations.

We first worked with Barry in 2010 on remodeling an office space. Even though his quote wasn't the lowest, we thought he is a genuine person & awarded the work to him. It took about two months to finish the job and it was done wonderfully nice & my clients were very impressed with the finished product. Based on that experience, we worked with him on my home kitchen remodel as well. Recently we bought an old building for my wife's spa business & Barry did the complete remodel of that space. Total three months work & I would say job very well done. It was very difficult job to remodel the 50-60 yr old building but thay managed it very well. Barry & his team is very professional and the most I like about his work style is 'never say no' attitude. We had several changes to the original design & almost every day we wanted something different than the plan but he always came up with new & better solutions. For us, Barry is our 'go to guy' if we need anything around the property. I highly recommend his company for any construction work.

My fence had been vandalized and was in rough shape. Mr. Blalock contacted me through my thumbtack request. He bid on my job, came to look to give an actual quote, and then did the work within a week. His actual price was within $10 of his bid on thumbtack. He replaced pickets, reinforced the 2x4 rungs, and fixed up a prior repair that had left sharp screws sticking out an inch.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

    • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
    • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
    • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
    • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
    • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

For more on where to start when remodeling a bathroom check out The Complete Thumbtack Bathroom Remodel Guide.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.
