Wilson, was a very great help to me today. I was having a toilet overflow after I flushed, and he came to the rescue. Even when I couldn't get a hold of my LANDLORD to get this taken care of. He provides great customer service at a wonderful affordable rate. I am on Thumbtack myself, and it was great to work with a fellow vendor to help you out. If you need any help with plumbing, or any other type of service. CRDR Handyman is the man with a plan! Thank you once again Wilson, and I will be sure to recommend your services to everyone.

Juan is just superb, he knew about plumbing, electricity and everything that he needed to replace the garbage disposer, he wound up having to replace the pipes under both sinks and he was very reasonable in his labor costs, I am totally pleased with his service and will definetly call him first with all of my repairs.

Roger was on time, friendly and courteous! He fixed a seal in one bathroom and fixed the base of the other bathroom. He took his time and did the job well. I think I'll keep his name and number on the fridge door. However, I don't think we'll have any issues but if a friend or neighbor is is need of a good person to fix plumbing, Roger is da man! Will hire again for future plumbing jobs. I had my old hot water heater replaced and new one installed. He also replaced some valves for me.

I have had so much trouble trying to get someone to take on my job. Because of some water damage, I was in need of a new a/c access door and repair to the surrounding ceiling. Eduaro responded to my request almost immediately, and scheduled a time to come take a look that same day. He took some measurements, told me his plans, and gave me a quote including materials within the hour. He arrived the next day ready to work. He was fast, efficient, professional, and polite and did a high quality job for a reasonable price. I absolutely recommend!

Richard exceeded our expectations. He truly went above and beyond to ensure excellent quality services. We are first time home buyers and purchased a fixer upper. Richard painted, completely reconstructed one of our cabinets in the kitchen, and did some plumbing work for us. He was very pleasant to speak with and patient when answering questions. His price is unreal for what you actually get!

Mike initially explained how he could obtain a better quality water heater from a company distributor than I could purchase from a home improvement warehouse. The cost to our family was about the same. When it became obvious to him that another commitment would prevent his scheduled installation time, he called to express his regret for our inconvenience. The water heater was professionally installed, the area cleaned up, and the old unit removed. I would highly recommend Mike and his small plumbing company. Thanks. Ron

I have used Xpress since before they were even called Xpress! I am a Fixed Operations Manager at a Car Dealership, so one of my responsibilities is to handle all facets of facilities maintenance and repairs. The facility is several decades old and prior management neglected the responsibility. We rarely go a full week without having a facilities issue and Travis and Melissa are always our first call. We have used them for renovation work, electrical, plumbing, lighting, paint, ceiling tiles, parking lot striping, fencing, door repairs, tile flooring, and even preparation for OSHA and EPA inspections. They always present an estimate that gives us a full scope of what options there are for us. Sometimes they find options that we haven’t even considered. They give us the full spectrum and show us how we can back down to what is bare minimum. We normally find great value somewhere in the middle which is exactly what we are looking for. The work is always of good quality and they always find small ways to throw in some additional things they find. I have recently purchased a new home and I am now working with Xpress on having a fireplace added to my home. The versatility of their company, the flexibility for scheduling, and fair pricing are an asset to our company. Additionally I love doing business with small family owned and operated businesses. I definitely recommend allowing Xpress the opportunity to earn your business.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

How much does it cost to fix a hot water heater?

Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400 or more. Water heater repair costs will depend on the type of water heater you have (tankless, electric, natural gas, etc.), the source of the problem, the cost for new parts, and labor rates in your area. Common water heater issues include problems with the thermocouple, thermostat, heating element and leaks. Most standard electric water heaters have two thermostats and two elements. One example for the cost to replace a bad thermostat is $185 for parts and labor. Replacing both the thermostat and the heating element could cost approximately $150-$200. The thermocouple is a safety device that senses when the pilot light is burning and signals the gas valve to close if the pilot light goes out. If your thermocouple is bad or corroded, the average cost to clean and repair it could be between $350 and $400. If your water heater has started to leak, it is usually more cost-effective to invest in a new water heater than to repair it, unless you’re covered by a warranty.
