Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to have an outlet installed?

If you plan on hiring a professional electrician to install an outlet, expect to pay $75 to $500, or an average of $210. But for an accurate cost estimate, you need to contact a few electrical outlet installers near you.

The light switch and outlet types may impact your cost. The location of the outlet also matters, as the electrician may have to route additional wiring and may not have access to existing wiring. If you need the outlet childproofed, this may also cost more.

Do I need an electrician to add an outlet?

Generally, this is a job best left to a licensed professional. A licensed electrician will be able to install your outlet using the most up-to-date code practices. If you need any permits to perform the install, the electrician should also be able to obtain them for you.

Do I need a permit to install GFCI outlets?

Depending on where you live, you likely need a permit to install GFCI outlets. When in doubt, get in contact with your local government, and ask a licensed electrician to perform your electrical work.

Jay did a fantastic job installing a couple new outlets for me. I don't think you can find someone more courteous or professional - and I'd happily hire him again for future electrical or handyman jobs.

JD Electric was responsive and showed up on time to my appointment. I wanted a NEMA 14-50 outlet installed in my garage for an Electric vehicle I purchased. The recommended specs for maximum charging calls for 6-3 wire and a 50 amp breaker. When JD first arrived he told me that 50 amp breakers were out of stock and stock on the ship in the blocked canal. He instead took a 40 amp breaker from my AC unit and replaced it with a 30 amp breaker he brought with him. JD Electric said the 30 amp would be enough, however another electrician stated it would not and replaced it with another 40 amp breaker. I do not know enough to comment. He also used 8 gauge wire even after I told him the recommendation was 6-3 garage wire. He was persistent that 8 gauge was safe to use, and it may be but it’s not what is recommended, and not what I wanted. JD Electric did offer to come out and change the breaker, provided I find one on my own. Which after approximately 5 minutes of searching I did. There was no mention of willingness to change the wire. I feel like JD Electric was not adequately prepared for the job and tried cutting corners. Ultimately I had another electrician come out the next day to redo the install. Had JD Electric used the correct breaker size, and the wire suggested their pricing would have been great. However, that is not what happened and I found it disappointing and a waste of money.
