Daniel fixed my 1950's GM Refrigidaire refrigerator when most other maintenance contractors wouldn't even give it a look over. Fair price, honest guy, and trustworthy. Will definitely call back when needed again.

I worked with CJ and he was very professional, prompt, responsive and very knowledgeable. The prices they charge for repairs is higher than other HVAC contractors but he does quality work and explained everything including how other contractors will charge less because they take short cuts which can lead to issues and more costs down the road. In our case that's what happened with some of the repairs we previously had on the AC condenser that we ended up having to have CJ replace. Overall, I am satisfied with the work they did and would consider using again.

Art told me Sundays are good days for him. I lucked out as he was on the way to another location. He was able to swing by and made a fairly quick diagnosis. He was full of info re HVAC's and volunteered several helpful comments about my two systems. Even though he cleaned out one of my HVAC unit's drain, mainly to confirm it was not the source of a leak nearby at the dining room ceiling, he did not charge for that service. He stuck with his $60 quote for the diagnosis. Thanks to him I now realize I have a plumbing issue not related to the HVAC. I strongly recommend him!

Roberto contacted me with a very honest and reasonable quote up front. Unlike other contractors would usually jack up the price first just to take their chance then later on dropping the price because the customer is getting bids from other people. Deluxe central air didn't just replaced the coil and the outdoor unit for me but also installed three flood shut off switches for me which I didn't know it's better to have. Even though one of the employee made a tiny mistake of the assembly of the pipes but Roberto soon took the responsibility and came to fix it next day first thing in the morning plus added freon into my other unit without charge as compensation. It's hard to find people that do business like them nowadays. I highly recommend these guys to everybody.

Harvey is a consummate professional. If you want a timely (incredible reaction time for quote, arrival, and project completion), competent These guys can do virtually anything, and if they can't, then they will refer you to someone who can rather than screw up your house (we've all been THERE!). They work is of extreme quality, care, and attention to the detail that YOU want. These guys pay attention, listen, and get the job done. Integrity is not just a name they picked, it represents what they stand for. Expecting to pay and arm and a leg for this kind of service?? You should! But not here! The quality of work is top notch, at below average pricing. Whoever says you get what you pay for, needs to shut their mouth and let Integrity prove them wrong. You are wasting your time, money and sanity for inferior work if you hire anyone else. Thanks, Harvey for a fantastic impromptu weekend of hard work, and fitting me into your busy schedule. You got more accomplished in 2 days than all my other 4 contractor combined could have. Harvey is so awesome that I feel compelled to leave this review now, even though I want him all to myself for the next month.

The owner, Gary, and his team were just amazing. The18 year old a/c that had been running the second floor had to be replaced. Gary came immediately and together we worked out which brand and type of equipment I would be comfortable with including some improvements of the existing system. The quote was very competitive. Two days later Gary himself and three more of his team came and installed the new system. Man, were they efficient! Four super focused guys that all knew what they were doing. In the afternoon everything was completed - plug and play. I am the owner of ten properties so I have experienced many contractors, but I very seldom find contractors that are this good. I really can recommend Hagen Mechanical Solutions.

Amazing experience. Red Star was incredible. I found them through Thumbtack and they were fantastic. They offered to work around my schedule and did everything to ensure our satisfaction. The technician (Drew) was at my home at the time agreed upon. That rarely happens nowadays. He then proceeded to listen to my concerns with my HVAC system and promptly got to work. He was professional, thorough and extremely quick. I will absolutely recommend Red Star to all my friends and family. Thank you again for a job well done!

These guys are by far the best HVAC company I have ever dealt with. As a property investor, that says a lot! Sam got to one of my rental properties and diagnosed the problem quickly, contacted me and got permission for the repair and had the system back in business within 30 minutes. I thought I was going to have to buy a complete new system that would set me back thousands and he fixed it for far less. Super happy with these guys

Excellent job!! 1) He showed up on time, which unfortunately is sometimes not the case with contractors, 2) He was very professional and courteous, 3) He said he was going to take an hour to get the job done, after 50 minutes everything was assembled and trash in a bag. Would definitely recommend him and will contract him anytime I need help. Such a good experience after a few bad ones hiring through Thumbtack!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
