Mike James helped us design and then he installed our new backyard. We knew we wanted and needed to redo it but weren't sure what to do. He patiently walked us through options based on likes and our budget. He then handled removal of old and install of new expertly. Mike stays on top of the project constantly. He pays great attention to details and can do just about anything that is needed -- from landscape to irrigation to fencing and much more. He is professional and outstanding with communication - he kept us informed constantly on all aspects. He and his crew were prompt, neat, quick and honest. This is our second project with Mike James and we have two more planned. I now look forward to working on projects again since finding Mike James.

I recommend Jeff highly. He was very conscientious about doing a great job estimating, trimming and cleaning up afterward and exceeded my expectations. He genuinely cares about what he is doing and over delivers on his commitments. i had 6 large trees badly needing the trimming as well as some large shrubs that Jeff and his crew took care of as well. The trees look great and the mess was minimal. I have extensive experience with contractors, having done full renovations on 3 homes. Without a doubt Jeff is top 5% in the world of contractors.

These guys were really nice, affordable and fast. While many would be reticent about a delay, which did occur in this case. I work in a commercial environment, and I understand that a good contractors schedules will vary because they will stick around at a site to make sure things are done right. The delay was short and not repetitive. They kept in touch and arrived right on time. They had my TV installed fast and made sure to troubleshoot the job before leaving. They pointed out that the TV looked crooked; a fact they could have let me notice after they left and immediately found that the problem was with the crown molding and not their job and went so far as to place a level on each for me to see the issue so that I could have it corrected by my complex. When it came time to pay I realized that I only had a debit card which they couldn't accept. They patiently waited while an ATM was visited so that they could be paid. The most important part is that they were professional and easy going. I will definitely call them back when I move again to reinstall the TV and for any other install that comes up. Kudos to BluStar!

Kyle was on time and got to work right away. He is a knowledgeable, professional, and polite individual. He was able to resolve my sprinkler issue and also took the time to provide some education on proper management of watering cycles and times. I will hire him again if I need any additional sprinkler/irrigation work.

Good quality, timely work with a very competitive price. I had a large fencing and landscaping project and they worked with me figure out what I wanted and then knocked it out quickly and efficiently. Their pricing was better than any other quotes I got and they were honest and straightforward to deal with. Will definitely be using them in the future.

Wow. I think I finally found a landscaper... After trying a few out I decided I would just keep firing and hiring until I found someone who listed to what I told them. Well the difference is finding someone who has a passion for what that do. And that is Travis! From now on (for other tradesmen) I won't have to hire and fire... I will interview people and if they don't have the same passion that Travis displayed I'll keep looking. Thanks for the great job and teaching me how to evaluate contractors!!!

Excellent, reputable company. Our irrigation system was destroyed to bits because of the construction on both sides of our home and American Arbors did an outstanding job to repair everything. Chuck is a good guy to work with. His crew is simply amazing.

Much more responsive than any of the other contractors I was working with. We had the project discussed and taken care of before the other contractors even managed to schedule a day to come look at things for an estimate. Sent pictures of the work while it was in progress via text as well which was great.

Before Raging Bull, I hired two other irrigation specialists to come out and locate buried valves for three zones. Neither of the other companies located the valves, but still charged $250+ each for their time (less than three hours each), despite not actually providing a solution to my irrigation issues. I hired Raging Bull because of their "per service" pricing and will be using them for all of my irrigation needs in the future. In less than 20 minutes, the specialist found all three valves and gave me some advice regarding some water pressure issues I'm having in another zone. Completely worth the price, and its great to know that I'm actually paying for issues to be resolved rather than for "troubleshooting" with no solutions.

Very patient. Explains everything if you need him to....Works til he gets the job done. Very patient....purposely reiterated. Respects what you want but also provides valuable advice if your choice is not the best choice for the project. My place was a mess...he got me all fixed up....Other contractors said my job was too small for them...but after meeting Rene showing him what was needed, he took the job anyway cause he 'wanted to help'. I have a bigger project is pending. Now after seeing his work....the bigger project sitting on the back burner is already his! Super pleasant and friendly as well! Couldn't be happier.

I had a broken backflow on my irrigation system. Chavez landscaping gave me an estimate and fixed the problem the next day. The cost quote was accurate for the work but there was an additional charge because Morgan's Point Resort requires a separate evaluation and testing report which cost an extra $50. Work was efficient and professionally done. Kudos to Chavez Landscaping.

Rob & Dan came out earlier than expected and were super courteous and thorough. They got the repair done in a snap, talked through some potential changes to my iro setup and looked at some crooked heads on a separate zone. Upon inspecting the crooked heads, we found a head assembly that had broken and they fixed that up in 5-10 minutes as well. A solid crew that I will definitely use in the future.

Jeremy and his team were excellent throughout the process. First, through quoting, Jeremy was extremely responsive and helpful in fine tuning my plans without being overbearing or pressuring. Then, during the job, they put things together quickly and professionally. Finally, what really made them stand out was how they handled a problem - I had an issue with my irrigation system that, left unresolved, would have led to some very dead grass. Instead of 'sorry, this wasn't our fault' or 'we'll get to it eventually', they worked consistently after everything else was completed to get this resolved and everything working well. I would highly recommend Jeremy and his team!

We hired Mi Tierra to redo our patio, help us with some drainage issues, and landscape much of our backyard. We did the project in phases and everything went well and looks great. We had a pretty good idea of what we wanted to do for our landscaping projects (at least we thought we did) but there are always lots of decisions to be made. David was patient and helpful as we figured things out and made our choices. I also thought David was resourceful in getting what we needed and/or using what we had to complete a project. We used a wide variety of materials (stone, rock, crushed granite, mulch, etc.) and David helped us choose by showing us pictures of his previous work and giving us his advice. We showed him some pictures of things we liked and I felt like we were on the same page as the projects progressed. We are glad we went with a stone patio instead of stamped concrete. It was a little more expensive but it really looks nice. Overall the projects all went smoothly and we are happy with the results. We would definitely use David and Mi Tierra again for future projects. Work completed: Landscaping, Large Stone Patio, Fire Pit, Drainage, Rock Work, Steps, Kids Play Area, Stone Walkway, Xeriscaping

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
