Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does countertop installation cost?

The national average for countertop installation is $2,147, but this cost can fluctuate depending on the type of countertop you want. Countertops made out of granite, marble, quartz, laminate, soapstone and even recycled glass will all have different costs.

The color and patterns may also have an impact, particularly you choose a natural stone with rarer colors or patterns available. The size and type of finish all play a role, too. Keep in mind more customized edges, complex shapes and cutouts will add to the cost.

To understand how much your new counters will cost, talk to contractors and countertop installers near you. Request free estimates so you can properly budget for this project.

How long does countertop installation take?

Countertop installation generally takes a couple of days, though some companies say it could take less than one day and closer to a week. It all depends on the demand the pro is dealing with.

If it's a remodel job, then it will take time to remove the existing countertop. The pro will then need to make cutouts for things like sinks and electrical outlets. After shaping the countertop in their shop, they will bring it in — typically in several sections — and place it and seal it. After fitting sinks, outlets and appliances into the countertop, they will seal the seams.

When you're requesting price quotes from countertop specialists, ask them how long it will take to install your new counters.

What's the most durable countertop?

Countertops made out of natural stones — such as granite and quartz — are the most durable. These materials are nearly impervious to heat, knife cuts, scratching and staining.

Marco and team did an excellent job to replace our kitchen countertops with black granite. Sink and breakfast bar counters are a bit odd shaped, however Marco cut them in a single slab which showed his skill. Entire job including demolition and installation was done in one and half day. Well done Marco.!

Well... there are definitly some pros and cons to this "Company". I like the speedyness of them coming out to measure and set up installation for the new granite countertops. They did a great job but there were definitly some bumbs in the road along the way. I was very frustrated with how Christina handeled herself with communication. We went over all work that needed to be done (aside from granite) and she wrote everything down and measured all. Then when it came time to start the other work in my house I was told that the work would begin in Thursday. That was then rescheduled to Friday. No big deal. I was told they would be there at 8am, then 12pm and then I received a text message Thursday night at 11:45pm at night that they would be there at 8am. I tried to find someone to be at my house to let them in and was very difficult to find someone in such a short time of notice with it being a working day. I found someone to drive all the way from Little Elm and I PAID her to drive all the way over and house sit while the work was going to be done... but the workers were tired of waiting, so they left and canceled the job. (Wasted money, time and frustration) I then received a text saying they will start work on Saturday at 8am. They showed up at 9:30am, very polite and nice people. They did not finish the work until Tuesday at 2pm. I then receive a message from Christina asking why I have not paid my remaining balance yet. This was one hour after the work had been completed. Seroiusly? I found that very rude as this was a working day and I had not even seen the completed work yet. There were a few other issues that were pretty big. I ended up having to purchase additional tile due to the miscommunication and back and forth with Chistina. I highly recommend that you get ALL details in writing and on the contract before beginning work. I had all areas in writing that were supposed to be completed but since they didn't detail exactly what they were going to be doing to those areas - it was not honered. I was told there would be a lesser price for this mishap but then was told there would not be. I was told the additional tiles I had to purchase would be reimbursed or taken off the final balance and I received back and forth yes and no's on that. I don't recommend her to anyone if you want to keep your sanity. I'm glad this adventure is over with. The work in my bathroom is STILL not completed and my new sink has a defect which will not allow the plumbing to be hokked up to it. BUT - I am to the point where I do not want to work with this company any longer to get it taken care of by them. I hope you will strongly consider your options before choosing this company.
