My son is in 10th grade and a bright boy. However, with ACT tests coming up, we wanted him to reach his highest potential. Through the Chelsea International Getting Into The Ivys test prep program, my son has excelled so much so that he is up to go to Stanford. After doing 6 weeks of private tuition with Dr. Michelle, her patience, understanding and encouragement, has driven my son’s greatest results. He scored 34 on his first time taking the ACT and he had no prior ACT testing experience. I am so impressed and so thankful for the professional experience of Chelsea International.

My son enjoys working with Foram and the best part is that he understands the concepts so much better now. I can't wait to see my son's progress with his grades at school.

My daughter finds Mathnasium of Leaguecity a friendly welcoming place to improve her math skills. She is frequently greeted by name and all the math instructors are knowledgable, helpful and pleasant. The system appears to be an organized solid method for providing math help and boosting math confidence. They also help in math homework and math test prep. I am also enrolling my daughter in their math summer camp.

Ms. Nazia was one of the most helpful people I have ever met. She tried to do her best with respect to my needs. She answered all my questions patiently and tried to find the best way for me to learn. Knowing my drawbacks, she tried to find the best way to help me with this. She was there whenever I need help. The way she communicates and teaches were very clear and quite understandable. She was not just my tutor but also was my advisor. She helped me a lot to have contacts and tried to find the best to get me in a graduate school. She always encouraged me and made me believe that I can succeed it. I really appreciate everything she did for me. If you look for someone that can really help you, I can recommend her to you all with all my sincerity.

I have worked with students in inner city Houston, students who are at-risk for failing, and regarding my test-prep, second language students and students who have failed standardized tests. My role as tutor has not only been academic, but also confidence building. Again, I have 27 years' teaching experience and am a mom of two girls taking the SAT and ACT this year.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I prepare for the GMAT?

If you’re thinking of enrolling in graduate school to earn your MBA, it’s time to start thinking about preparing for the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). Working with a GMAT tutor is for many people a wise investment to help you strengthen the academic areas you may be weak in and improving your overall test score. A GMAT prep tutor should teach you not only the kind of information you need to know for the test, but the best test-taking strategies. The GMAT tests you on four categories: quantitative, verbal, integrated reasoning, and an analytical writing assessment. Cramming is probably not going to give you good results for this standardized test; give yourself between two and six months to prepare, focusing on your most challenging areas first. Successful GMAT prep means planning ahead and studying thoroughly. Those students who reported studying under 75 hours were more likely to score 400 or lower on the test, while students who studied 121 hours or more were more likely to score 700 or higher on the test. Hiring a GMAT prep tutor can range in price from under $50 to over $200 per hour.

How long does it take to prepare for the GMAT?

Pros recommend planning to spend two to six months for GMAT prep. The test itself is only 3.5 hours long, but your score will have a major effect on what schools grant you admission. If you’d like to be considered for one of the top-tier schools, it’s recommended to score at least a 700. Your goals for your MBA can help drive your GMAT prep. GMAT tutors will guide your study plan and help analyze your strengths and weaknesses. GMAT tutors also offer professional guidance and insights on strategic GMAT test-taking. Avail yourself of free GMAT prep software that provides sample test questions for you to practice. The creators of the GMAT recommend creating a structured study plan detailing when you will study each day and what topics you will study during each session. Take into account what style of learning works best for you (solo study, one-on-one tutoring, group tutoring, study groups, prep courses) and proceed accordingly. The test is made up of these four categories, each with an allotted time:

  • Analytical writing assessment: 1 topic, 30 minutes.
  • Integrated reasoning: 12 questions, 30 minutes.
  • Quantitative: 37 questions, 75 minutes.
  • Verbal: 41 questions: 75 minutes.
