Al Jones and team built me a 16'x10' wood shed. This job took 3 days, right on track with what Al said. Al and his team are respectful, diligent, and detail oriented. I was very impressed with their efficiency and would without a doubt hire them again for any future construction project.

We were very happy with the results after Angel painted our single story house. He is an honest combination of quality and value. He met with us two or three times before we scheduled. He repaired, prepped (including pressure washing), and then painted. His prep was so thorough that two of my neighbors mentioned it. He did an excellent job with the exterior repairs, which included carpentry on the siding and roof soffits. The whole process took some time, a couple of weeks, due to spring storms and unexpected but necessary repairs (a storm-downed branch damaged the soffit) and it was worth it. Angel really takes his time to do it right, and has pride in his work. We took a chance hoping that the job quality would be worth the value, and there is no doubt that’s the case.

Manuel and his guys were so amazing. They built a closet for our washer dryer in half a day, had it textured and painted the very next morning and gave me a price I couldn’t beat. Not to mention, took care of a few miscellaneous items that needed to be done that were not included in the initial work request. He also saw where we could benefit from some more work and offered an incredibly creative solution that was needed for the lighting in the kitchen. He is an unbelievably professional, honest, and communicative businessman and I HIGHLY recommend hiring him for all your general construction needs!!

I hired Izaiah at Clean Planet Construction to convert an old soundproof music room back into a bedroom. It was 3 layers of a room inside of the room....Not an easy task. After removing the MDF and foam Izaiah informed me that there was quite a bit of water damage in the ceiling from the AC vent leaking condensation between the boards. It was kind of horrifying and not a pleasant discovery. Izaiah got me a quote to replace the ceiling, repair all of the damage, paint the entire room, and to repair all damaged wood in minutes. His quote was professional, itemized, easy to understand, and totally fair considering how big the project had become. Izaiah was great with communication and his team killed it! The room looks brand new! Izaiah and his team devoted 100% of their attention to our project, and even worked a couple of double shifts to get the job done on time. I am thrilled with Izaiah and will most likely be hiring him for a extensive remodel in the near future. I highly recommend Clean Plant Construction for any project. Izaiah and his team are good, honest people.

I was very satisfied with the Onyx shower and vanity installation in two bathrooms. My rating and hiring of Felipe was based on pictures of installation of other showers that he had done. Secondly, that not many contractors are versed with the installation of this type of material. Lastly, the tile and paint work that was done was to my satisfaction. The only problem encountered was the delay in getting sheetrock workers for work that had to be done prior to starting the job.

Pros: the fence that I hired Derby to build turned out perfect. He upgraded my posts from wood to steel and picket thickness. All for a reasonable price. Cons: construction site cleanliness was disappointing but not part of any agreement so I won't take stars away for that. I recommended this business.

Door installation with frame. What went well was Aaron was there very early and got straight to work. Every time there was an issue, he didn't take it upon himself to just correct it, he instead showed me and gave me options. Very knowledgable about framing and tho there were a few hiccups in the door size he made it work flawlessly and was did everything well and expediently! Highly recommend and would def call again for any other jobs I need done. Also he had very reasonable price quote compared to other quotes which were $100's of dollars more

I can only say… working with JW Construction is/was exceptionally AWESOME. Jarett made it very simple. He was friendly, courteous and discussed my home requirements as if it was his own. I researched several companies and chose JW Construction because of Jarrett’s friendliness, respectfulness and knowledge of the industry. The experience with JW Construction was an extraordinary success for my roof replacement; and I’m totally happy with the price, workmanship, and timing to complete the project. Mr. Wright is abundantly friendly, respectful, and prompt and delivered on time and the completed project is worth bragging about. Jarett is a super trustworthy guy and extremely genuine – he loves what he does and is passionate (beyond belief) about construction and that comes through in everything he did for me throughout the whole job process. You can’t go wrong with JW Construction.

Jameson, was fantastic. I had him come basically redo a whole new irrigation system in my yard and the attention to detail you put go make sure everything was perfect and that I wouldn’t have any issues in the future was amazing! I would hire him in heartbeat for any other outdoor projects I have. If I could I would give him 100 out of 100 on this review. Thank you Jameson!!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do construction project managers do?

Construction project managers help in all stages of your construction project, starting from the very first step. Typically paid a percentage of a total project cost, they are part of the design and planning process and help ensure seamless communication between the design parties and the construction team. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, their scope of work includes preparing cost estimates, budgets and work timetables; interpreting and explaining contracts and technical information to other professionals; reporting work progress and budget to clients; collaborating with architects, engineers and other construction pros; selecting subcontractors and scheduling and coordinating their tasks; responding to work delays, emergencies and other problems; and ensuring compliance with legal requirements, building and safety codes, and other regulations.

The work of construction project managers may seem very similar to that of general contractors, but there are some critical differences. One difference is that, unlike most general contractors, project managers are not engaged in the actual construction — they are onsite overseeing the work of subcontractors. Another key difference is that project managers are hired during the design phase, while general contractors are hired after plans have been made. The project manager is generally paid a percentage of the total project cost, while the general contractor is more typically paid according to the bid they gave to build your project.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

How do I find out if a contractor is licensed?

It’s important to know if your project requires work by a licensed professional, as licensing laws can vary by state, locality, and job details. You can find general licensing information online at the government websites that handle occupational licensing for a given profession in your state or location. Some states designate a project cost over which you have to hire a licensed contractor. To find qualified licensed contractors, search your state’s licensing board. For example, in California, the Department of Consumer Affairs operates a searchable database through the Contractors State License Board. In some states, contracting licenses are provided at a regional level. You can find links to specific databases on BRB Publications’ Occupational Licensing page. Red flags that a contractor may not be licensed or may be providing an expired or false license number are unreasonably low bids or a request for complete payment upfront. How much does a project manager charge per hour?

You may choose to hire a construction project manager for your residential or commercial project. For the hands-on homeowner who wants to be involved in home construction but isn’t comfortable hiring subcontractors, a construction project manager can oversee these relationships and supervise labor. Typically, construction project managers charge a fee that is a flat percentage of the total construction project cost. This may range from 10 percent to 15 percent, depending on the company and the services they provide. This means a $30,000 home remodel project would have a construction project management fee of $3,000-$4,500. Hiring a construction project manager generally precludes the markup on subcontractor labor charged by a general contractor. The drawback to this choice is that, unlike a general contractor, the construction project manager won’t be financially responsible for the work of the subcontractors. For larger projects, you may hire a construction project manager who will also hire a general contractor. This provides the benefits of the general contractor along with the management services of the project manager, who will be on board from the beginning. The construction project manager will be involved in the design phase and work with the architects and the building crew, facilitating a smoother overall process.
