Introduction: At Community R.E.C. Therapies, our mission is to help others have a better understanding of themselves and the world around them. We strive to provide excellent home and community-based service with topnotch therapists, which means every program, every goal, and every session is tailored to meet the needs of your child and/or family member.
Currently, we provide recreation therapy, aquatic therapy (pool therapy), and adapted aquatics. All services are provided by a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) with a bachelor's degree. In addition, recreation therapists have CPR/AED through the American Red Cross or American Heart Association, professional liability insurance, auto insurance, and undergo drug screening. Recreational therapists who have emergency water safety (American Red Cross), water safety instruction, and/or lifeguard certification as well as additional training in aquatics, provide aquatic therapy.
Therapists tailor programs to meet the needs of individuals with disabilities; therefore, each recreational therapy program looks different. Therapeutic activities may include, but are not limited to, the following: arts and crafts, scrapbooking, computer skills, team sports, card games, board games, music activities, cooking/baking, and puzzles. In addition, clients may participate in therapeutic outings including, but not limited to, the following: movies, bowling, adapted kayaking, laser tag, community festivals, concerts, zoo, park, garden center, department stores, and professional sports games. Clients with specific interests are encouraged to share those with their therapists. Each client receives an initial evaluation to determine his or her needs, tailored goals and treatment plan, and a quarterly chart and treatment plan review.
All aquatic therapy or pool therapy services are provided within the scope of our practice as certified therapeutic recreation specialists or recreational therapists. We utilize aquatic therapy, adapted aquatics, and aquatic fitness, to enhance function and improve quality of life. Our therapists incorporate leisure and recreation activities, relaxation exercises, weight bearing, stretching, and walking into therapy. We work to increase health and fitness, stamina, flexibility, safety awareness, and adapted swim skills.
Finally, we offer 4-6 week adapted aquatics programming. Adapted aquatics is a short-term leisure program performed in the water, and designed to help individuals with disabilities, learn safe and effective methods for enjoying the water. Recreational therapists provide adapted aquatic activities, such as basic swim skills, breathing techniques, floating, and water activities, tailored to meet the swim needs of your child, youth, and/or adult family member.
Clients may pay for services privately, or access funds through the class funds. We offer services in Austin, Waco, Corpus Christi, and College Station. Please call for estimated rates because we offer a sliding scale based on location and travel time.
