Taylor is a professional in every way. She came prepared for the problem and offered and demonstrated techniques that worked immediately. It was really an eye opener. Her confidence with and in the dogs made a world of difference in their behavior. We were having problems with our dogs exhibiting aggressive behavior towards other dogs. By the end of the session, we had both dogs inside the dog park, showing no aggression. She followed up with a written synopsis of the problem and steps to take for behavior change. I would highly recommend Taylor. She has a complete grasp of dogs and their behavior, and is not afraid to " think outside the box" to problem solve. She is a pleasure to work with, and dogs respond very positively to her!

My little dog is very fearful.-frightened of strangers. Not the K9 trainer! My dog was analyzed and I was told exactly what could be done to help her. And how it would be done

Bill has done such an amazing job with Aubrey! Before having him as my dog trainer, I thought that training my puppy was impossible. Aubrey was very disobedient, never listened when I called, aggressive with other dogs, and destroyed just about anything. I was running out of options, and considered giving my puppy away. K9 training was my last resort, and my best investment! Just a few days at Off Leash K9 training, and Aubrey transformed into new dog! He contacted me frequently about Aubrey's progress and was always happy to answer any questions I had. I highly recommend him to anyone with dog issues!

I began obedience training with my new dog (new to me, but one-year-old) highly skeptical that either of us would learn a thing. I was absolutely wrong--Gretta learned to heel, sit, lie down, go to her "place," and stay; I learned all the things I'd been doing wrong for so many years! Amy is an amazing instructor--knowledgeable, systematic, patient, and so much fun. I wholeheartedly recommend Paws About Town to anyone wishing to have a more obedient and therefore safer dog.

What a great dog trainer! His experience and ongoing refresher training is exemplary. Great personal touch explaining his protocol and then our big sweet pit bull responded very well. She did very well in our first training and learned a lot. Couldn’t be happier.

Marlene is so great! What I liked most was her experience and knowledge. She isn't just some trainer who went through a seminar and now thinks they are a dog trainer. I wasn't sure I even needed help thinking I could do it myself no problem. But after meeting with her I realized just how little I know about training and my dog's behavior. I realized this was an investment for the next 10-12 years that I would be spending with my pooch and am so grateful for the wealth of knowledge she provided. Marlene loves dogs and helping people and it shows.

Kevin is a fantastic trainer -- for dogs AND their people! He has been so patient with our foster dog and has helped us all adjust to our changing environment. Kevin was even available last-minute to help us when our foster dog and family cat were not getting along. He helped us not only assess the situation but also keep both animals happy and safe. I truly believe that it is Kevin's guidance and the support from our Dog Rescue that carried us through the initial days as first-time fosters. Kevin helped make the experience a very rewarding one, and in turn helped us open up our home to a dog in need. Thank you Kevin for your patience, honesty and dedication. Two paws up!

I'm working with Kelly to train a service dog for myself. She has been absolutely wonderful every step of the way (she even went with me to meet my SD prospect). Kelly's approach to training is customized to each individual dog/handler pair. At our first training session she assessed our dog/handler relationship as well as my dog's personality to determine the best training methods for us. Kelly is wonderful about making sure you understand the reasoning behind the methods used, and she is quick to make adjustments based on your dog's response or lack there of to each method. Even after the first session, I saw a huge improvement with my dog after applying Kelly's suggestions. In addition to being an amazing dog trainer, she is an all around joy to work with. I highly recommend hiring Kelly as your trainer. You won't regret it!

Sean was the perfect trainer for our German Shepherd Titan.  He was very accommodating with our busy schedule and helped make our 1.5 hour commute worth it. He is very passionate with every dog he trains. Titan and I were able to form a better relationship by following Sean's suggestions and commands. He was very patient and answered all of our questions. He would make sure we understood what we should be doing with Titan at home and on walks. The training sessions were very comfortable and efficient. Not once did my wife and I feel uncomfortable to ask Sean questions. Titan became very comfortable with Sean as well, considering him part of his "pack". Titan looked forward to training with Sean everyday. It wasn’t just training for Titan, Sean helped us better understand the fundamentals of dog training. Overall it was the best training experience we could have asked for and we will definitely be back with our next dog!

Sharon is a gem! I have taken my dog Gus to her for both boarding and puppy classes. She is by far one of the most patient animal trainers that I know. Her heart is devoted to loving and caring for animals. She is also very experienced, professional, and flexible with schedules. Your animal will have top notch care at her boarding facility where she spends many hours of her day walking with your pet. Her small operation ensures that your pet gets the care it deserves and is treated like family.

Hello. My name is Alex Hakspiel, and I love to help out as many paws as possible. I have experience not only with house training, but with personal protection as well. Does your dog like to bark at everything or even chase cars? I can assure you that we can change all of that with a peaceful method of using verbal and hand commands. We'll be using all sorts of different approaches to rid of the problem without using negative punishment because I believe hitting your dog is like hitting your grandmother -- you just don't do it. My clients have a guarantee that my training will work, and if not, I'll fully refund the cost for the training sessions.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

    • What type of training methods do you use?
    • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
    • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
