Carlos was fantastic. He has the capability of playing a wide range and style of music and I particularly love how he can play a rock song in a classical/flamenco style. He called ahead and made sure I felt comfortable with everything and was open to my suggestions and any questions I had. He was professional and easy to work with only needing a power source and a proper chair. He started right away and didn't stop the entire time. I had 75 people at my gathering and they all commented on how good Carlos' sounded. I would definitely use Carlos again.

Jiayi was just the teacher I'd been looking for. She's kind and patient, and also rigorous with high expectations. It's clear she's a wonderful musician herself, which is . She's teaching my seven-year-old daughter who is still very much a beginner, and a fairly reluctant one at that. After our first lesson, my daughter said, "I think piano lessons will be kind of fun!" So that's a win. I definitely recommend Jiayi!

This guy is an awesome teacher ! I remeber when I first decided to take lessons I was nervous if the teacher would be intimidating, but then I heard about Paul Dattner ! I remeber when I first met him he was a really cool approachable guy . He is extremely easy and cool to get along with ! I always have conversations after lessons with him he is that cool of a guy! He is an excellent guitarist ! I honestly thought there was one type of genre of guitar we would be playing be but he has taught me a whole wide selection of music from classical to metal! He can teach you both accustic and electric! He as well has taught music theory and he has even begun to teach me to sing ! If you wanna take guitar as a hobby or wanna become a rock star , I definately suggest Paul Dattner , he does it all!!!!!

I hired the band to play for a backyard fish fry a couple of years ago and they had played earlier that day outdoors for San Antonio's Jazz Alive. Though it was late September it was a hot day and I wasn't sure if they would have enough energy left to REALLY play to the level I had heard in the past. Those who had never heard them before were blown away and they brought the juice that night. We had a great time and I look forward to booking them again someday. Only problem is that they haven't been playing that much lately.

Melody Nasiatka played for my wedding in the spring of 2008. She played beautifully and was very capable and flexible in working with my requests and the other musicians. If I ever need a harpist in the future, I will definitely call on Melody.

Madeline Elizondo is the perfect blend of serious diva power and approachable technique. With a wide range of expertise from Funk to Opera, all voices have much to gain through working with her. As a singer of multiple genres, I felt that by receiving classical instruction from Madeline, my voice improved in all categories. I gained a solid understanding and use of my voice that boosted my confidence to sing whatever was placed in front of me. I highly recommend taking voice lessons with Ms. Elizondo, you will not regret it!

    About

I offer acoustic solo or band musician/vocalist. I am a guitarist and vocalist. Guitar wise, I play lead or acoustic (rock, blues, country, flat picking, etc.), and vocally, I can sing lead or backup, but I do have a rather low voice. Writing is a big passion of mine. The genre would be considered Texas/Americana (Texicana). I also play piano, but it is a second instrument; however, I do have a couple of synthesizers. I also have a full P.A. and lighting system.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

    • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
    • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
    • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
