Mr. Carranza & wife did an excellent job - going beyond what was expected. They had to put ply wood in the ceiling to install the fan. The repair of the ceiling drywall in the other bedroom was perfect.

I did not end up having the ceiling drywall patched because the issue area was a patch already from the builder and Marco was very good at explaining that a new patch would not look any better than the previous patch without re-texturing the entire ceiling. He was honest and straightforward and I would call him again because he steered me in the right direction and was honest with me.

I had a small closet under the stairs that I needed to be finished out and these guys were incredible!! David Gonzales was professional, and kind and knew exactly what I wanted from our first meeting until the end. He brought over a wonderfully talented man, Guillermo, and was able to frame out a door, hang, tape, float, texture the sheet rock, lay tile flooring, install electricity and a light fixture, and paint! The electrician, Jose, also did a wonderful job in moving wires and installing plugs. The job could have taken 2 1/2 days, but they made sure things were drying correctly and did not rush anything. They ended up completing the project in 4 days and it's probably the best room in my house! I would/will hire these guys again in the future and recommend that you do the same! The price was very fair, and I would have paid more (if the budget allowed) to have the ease of the process that David made it! GREAT JOB guys!! Thank you so much for making my tiny closet a BIG deal:-) Katie

Maury and Melissa are a pleasure to do business with, laid back and fun to have around. They fixed a couple of leaky faucets, replaced a kitchen faucet, hooked up an ice maker and installed a ceiling fan for me, all of which are working great. They do good quality work and their charge is very reasonable. I'd definitely use them again.

He was awesome! I had a really difficult light fixture - he helped me put it together with no complaints (this was not part of what he was supposed to do for me - he just did it!). He was very friendly and gave a fair, reasonable price. He installed a ceiling fan, several light fixtures (including a very difficult, tedious one) and helped me with a plumbing issue.

JJ was amazing and installed 2 ceiling fans for me. He and his partner were able to get the job done even after I screwed it up by stripping the screws trying to do it myself. He informed me on the process the whole way through. Was able to come get the job done with only a days notice. Great service and affordable. I will be using him for jobs in the future.

The quote was very good and was what I ended up paying. If I had wanted something fancier, it would have cost more. I settled for a simple 2-post roof/cover over my small patio. The first rain resulted int leaks from the roof on one end and at the center where the ceiling fan hung. Mr. Gay came out and identified the problem and fixed it. After several rains, still no leaks. I was concerned about some vertical cracks on the posts. Mr Gay came out and examined them; he explained that was normal and would not cause any problems; but he said if any problems developed, to call him back. I did not have to call him back. All and all, very satisfied with the work -- took 3 days over a 5 day period. Mr Gay was reasonable and for the most part efficient. I bought an outdoor ceiling fan specifically for flushing with the ceiling. Unfortunately, he was unable to get the fan to hang flush with the ceiling; that was my only disappointment. I will have to hire someone who is an expert in hanging ceiling fans to hang it the way I want it to hang. I would recommend AOS to anyone needing a simple roof installed over their patio.

I had my cabinets repainted and a repair to my ceiling. I also added on a custom shelf and some other repairs and items. Joe and his team did an awesome job including custom mixing my ceiling paint and were always willing to take on the next project I added to the list. They were always prompt and courteous. I plan on using them for more projects in the future and definitely would recommend them.

They came to tape float and texture a hole in my ceiling that the plumbers made. They arrived on time and got the work done quickly. Owner stayed and supervised the workers. Asked for a quote on some roof work and never heard back that was the only disappointment that did not make this a 5 star review.

Everything went well. The work done was very professional and exactly what I wanted done. He installed a ceiling fan where a broken fan had been; He returned again at my request and installed a porch ceiling fan, and security motion detector lights. He ran all the wires through the attic so the resulting work was beautiful and clean. I just had him return today to install a light fixture over the dining room table. He is very knowledgeable about the work he did. He gave me options and suggestions about outlets and things I had not considered. He several times made the trip to Home Depot to pick up supplies to get the job done. He even helped me go online to pick out the best type ceiling fan for the porch. He is extremely polite and stays on the job without wasting time. I believe he is relatively new to working with customers but it was all to my advantage b/c I would rather have some one who just wants to make an honest living versus someone just interested in a quick buck. He is extremely conservative in his pricing. I gave him extra most visits b/c I thought he deserved more $ than he was asking. I had a long list of to-dos electrically and they are all done. He was available within a reasonable time and arrived on time or called me if he was running late. This man is THE ELECTRICIAN to hire. You won't regret it.

Alberto is a very knowledgeable handyman who is respectful and well mannered. It is very hard to find handymen who at the same time are knowledgeable, punctual, hard working, courteous and educated. His expertise relies on basic plumbing and basic electricity as well as in many types of handwork, painting, fixing broken house materials, placing kitchen cabinets, hanging heavy items on walls, placing ceiling fans, landscaping and many more. I will definitely thrust him. He is very detailed oriented and takes the necessary time to do the work in perfection. Highly recommended.

He was reliable, courteous, conscientious, considerate and skilled. He corrected anything that was not up to his high standards or mine. He always left a clean work site. His work was excellent. He removed ceiling fans, clad an exposed, laminated beam, trimmed the cladding and rehung the fans on a vaulted ceiling. Refinished three doors, installed molding around five doors, corrected problems with two doors’ original installation, installed door knobs on all. Installed baseboard in two rooms. Extensively remodeled an office including: Installed tongue-in-groove aromatic red cedar on one wall Custom framed three windows, two in aromatic red cedar and one in pine. Completed installation of a half-done bead-board ceiling Installed track lighting on said ceiling. Painted said ceiling and the pine window framing Installed wiring raceway along three walls to carry computer wiring. Added a duplex plug to one wall. Finished and installed a “barn door” on an office wall allowing door to slide open and closed without taking up room needed for office furniture. Did a beautiful job. Built a wheelchair ramp along an uneven exit to facilitate safe passage for a newly handicapped resident. I will happily employ him again. Thanks, again.

TL;DR Their work was good and they ended up getting it done, though I wasn't pleased by the fact they wanted to charge me more than we'd initially agreed to. I am glad they honored the price we'd agreed to. I'd recently had attic stairs installed and the sheetrock fell, leaving a hole in the ceiling. I hired Superior Home Improvements to fix this problem. Even with my description and pictures, there was some misunderstanding about the job. I needed the ceiling fixed up (sheetrock, texture, paint) in my stairwell. I received a quote for $400, which is all I could really commit to for the project, so I was happy they'd be able to get it done for that price. When they arrived on the job site and saw the area, they said it really should be more because of the height and the need to install scaffolding. After some back and forth, they agreed to honor the original price. The job was supposed to take 1 day but because they needed scaffolding, they said it would take two. At the end of the second day, they'd sprayed texture on the ceiling but I could still see the brown of the sheetrock through the texture and informed them of this. They told me that once it dried it would be white. The next day, I could still see the sheetrock, so I let them know. They came back and fixed it a day or two later. So all in all, the job took about 3 days. They did honor their commitment and got it done for $400 - though I was told that it should've been more like an $800 by the subcontractors and the PM.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
