William was great to work with and he has a very hardworking crew. We worked together on a plan to add hardscape to my backyard and he delivered a great final product. This project utilized a lot of different types of materials and also required major tree trimming. Project was completed in less than three days to plan and even clean up was exceptional. I already have a few other projects in mind for William!

Mosaia and his crew did a large backyard renovation for me. This job was done in a couple phases over about a month. They did a great job. Communication was excellent throughout the entire project. His prices are very fair. Here is a list of the things they did. Built a boulder retaining wall about 4ft tall by 80ft long. It turned out great. They also tore down the old wall of railroad ties. They took care of the permit and dealing with the city. It went pretty smooth Installed a new fence and gate on top of the wall. Looks great. They dug in drainage lines to stop the erosion in my back yard. Cut out a strip of the patio and installed some new drains to stop flooding. Installed OK milsap stone around all the back yard patio Installed a stone staircase thru the wall. It looks really good They moved the irrigation lines and fixed the broken ones Installed a flagstone path leading to the stairs Installed a new concrete pad for our pool pump and filter Built two flower gardens and filed them with potting soil. Laid new sod in the whole back yard. Mosaia handled all the procurement of the needed items. Everything from stones, concrete, wood, you name it, they took care of it. I will be having him do some more work on our yard soon. Their stone work is great.

I hired R&O to remove a lot of yard work done in my backyard that the previous owners had put it. I needed the room for my kids to play. They offered the lowest price and removed everything (it was a LOT) and installed new sprinklers in just one day. A very great group of guys and they know what they are talking about. Highly recommend to anyone needing any form of landscaping work done.

This was a fairly large existing circular drive (~1600 SQFT) that was replaced with stamped concrete. In addition, we needed to repair the flagstone patio around our pool. My experience was very positive from start of the project to finish. Nepote was very professional in providing the initial proposal and explaining the project, options and schedule. His project crew was on schedule and completed the project on time and on budget even I made several changes to the design and concrete color during the project. Nepote even agreed to do some additional work at minimal cost while the team was there. He was trustworthy, very flexible and responsive to our needs throughout. I was pleased with the final outcome of our stamped color concrete patio!

Mark was very helpful with a couple of small fixes I needed to my backyard irrigation system. He was very quick to respond, showed up on time and did what I needed for a fair price. I'd recommend him and use him again if needed.

Lawnsmith came out to do spring cleanup after years of neglect in our heavily wooded front and backyard. Andrew made several great recommendations and ensured we were satisfied with every step of the process. He was very professional and courteous to me and my family. I would definitely recommend him to anyone looking for a great lawn service and positive experience.

I have a small backyard but wanted to add something that is low maintenance and creates a peaceful environment. Justin installed a water feature and some stone borders to my flowerbeds. It totally change the feeling of the backyard and has also become a haven for birds. It is a wonderful early-morning place to have coffee.

I currently had Rossi do the landscaping in my backyard. She made 2 different gardens, planted several trees, created walkways to and from brick deck that she also made. She was extremely friendly and I highly recommend using her for any landscaping or home improvement tasks.

Giuseppe always arrived on time. Work was completed on schedule. All the workers were friendly and professional. I was impressed that all the workers were knowledgable of what they were doing and they could answer my questions and offer advice. Obviously the crew has worked together for a long time. They even helped clean up after a storm. The new irrigation system was planned and installed expertly. No leaks or adjustments have been needed since it was installed. Front lawn and new stone walkway look great. New flower bed design was appropriate to the house and looks great.

Really happy with the patio done in our backyard. Made suggestions we hadn’t even thought about and we love how it turned out. Will be using him and his team for our awning as well. Fair price, very professional.

Omar responded to a request, for cleaning up neglected yard which needed the shrubs trimmed, several dead roses removed, grass cut, etc. He not only provided a time he would arrive to give an estimate...unlike others who no showed he confirmed the time AND came on time!! He provided us a more than fair estimate and followed up with a "Thank you" which in this day is sadly unheard of by any contractor or even professional. Prior to his designated work day, he reconfirmed again. The day he was to do the work....he again showed on time! Again...pluses for both my husband and I. Omar and his partner's quality of work was better than our previous landscaping contractor with a large crew was far superior. As well as their detail to the work they were preforming. The previous work we had, sadly caused us to loose several bushes due to lack of care. Where as this time, they were careful to due to continuing growth along with blowing of leaves along with weeds. We were so impressed, we are now having Omar do our yard. As well as will have him do additional work for us. He is a professional landscaper and provides a great value for his work. having found him, we are quite pleased and look forward to continuing working with him.

I went to St. Augustine grass. It was nice working with the crew to get everything together. Everyone I dealt with was very professional. Previously I had used someone else for the other side of my yard, and I see the difference in the quality of the product. I will definitely use Robbins Family Lawn Care for my backyard when I am ready.

He was very responsive and earned our trust. Great work onsite. He poured the cement in our backyard to use as a base for the flagstone patio. Hardworking team. Came to visit to assess the project, submitted the final estimate and arrived on time per schedule.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

      • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
      • Read online reviews of client experiences.
      • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
      • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
      • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
