Joe paid close attention to detail and gave my bathroom a superb paint job. I have already shared his contact info with a couple of my friends looking for a handyman. I will 100% be hiring Joe again, for other projects and general handyman tasks. Thank you again, Joe!

I was contact by Marcial from Medina Construction & Roofing and two other contractors within 10 minutes after I posted on Thumbtack that I needed a Reroof on my house, the next day he did an inspection on my roof and provided me with a detail estimate for the job and included reference from BBB and Thumbtack, plus a certificate of liability insurance. After reading some reviews and getting two other estimates, I decided to go with Medina Const. for the best price. The job was schedule whitin one week and the work was done in a full day and a half on the entire roof. Marcial is the "man" he is hands on with his crew, he actually is part of the crew, clean job from start to finish, no problem adding extra work for the terrace, and upgrading to 30 year shingle. I would definitely recommend Medina Const. for any roofing project.

My roof suffered some hail damage last year and after filing a claim with my insurance company, I started searching for reputable roofers/general contractors. I reached out with my inquiry on Thumbtack and Matt Snow was one of 5 contractors that reached out to me promptly. Of the contractors I met with, Matt quickly made it to the top of my list. His courteousness, professionalism and reasonable estimate gave me just the confidence I needed to make my decision on which contractor to work with. Not knowing much of anything about roofing, it was a bit daunting to choose a contractor in the first place but Matt kept things simple. Not only did he provide a free inspection/estimate but sat down with me and reviewed the insurance claim, answering any questions/concerns I had. He also walked me through anything I didn't understand about the claim and at no time made me feel obligated to his business. The deadline for my claim was just a few weeks away and I was very concerned about the amount of work and time it would take for my roof to be completed and for my claim deadline to be met. Matt understood my sense of urgency and communicated his availability to me as well as providing me an accurate detail of how long it would take for the work to be completed. On the day of the job, his fellow contractors (he works with a team of two others) showed up promptly at 7:30 a.m. and started the work. I dealt with Matt directly, from start to finish of the project, and I appreciated there being no confusion or need to repeat myself to anyone else. I was charged for the roof after work on it had been started and Matt checked in a couple times throughout the day (it was a one day job) to keep me posted. Matt and his team are very reliable in my experience and wholly professional. Professionalism with courtesy go a long way in my book and Matt definitely defines that. This is an honest, transparent (reasonable rates and itemized invoice) and hard-working business that definitely wants to earn their customer's loyalty as much as their monetary business. My roof was a small job that didn't require a lot of hands but Matt and his team of two worked around the clock and delivered. I could hear them on the roof for the duration of the work and have no doubt as to how dedicated they are to getting the job done and done well! I also got the impression that no job is too big or too small to have Matt's full attention and dedication. Matt will work with your time, budget, claim and concerns. I highly recommend City Wide General Contracting and can't say enough great things about Matt and his team. This is a lengthy review but I wanted to cover all the bases of what I look for when hiring an individual/business. I am a first time homeowner and had no personal/direct experience with property damage and insurance claims prior to this. Matt put my mind at ease and made this process a bit more pain-free. I hope this review will be very helpful to anyone who is like me and wants to ease some of the stress that goes along with seeking reliable, reputable and courteous businesses. If you need roof repair or any General Contracting work, definitely consult with Matt Snow and City Wide General Contracting.

Franks guys did a nice porcelain tile floor in one of our bedrooms. The two guys who came out to our home to do it very friendly and hard working, barely took a break. Finished product was excellent and we are so happy with it. I'm the type of guy that likes to watch work being done, which i did, and they didn't mind at all, some contractors do not like onlookers, but they didn't mind me observing at all.

I'm an ex-contractor (very picky), the couple of times I've hired trades to help me with some of my home projects I've always ended regretting it. Decided to take a chance on Willy (Wilfredo), so I hired him to stain 240 ln. ft. of fence. The guy surprised me! Punctual, clean,detailed...a complete professional! And his quote more then fair. Hope to be working with him again real soon.

We hired them to level our granite counter top. The countertop seam cracked after one month and the contractor would then not respond to any further communications when we asked for help getting it repaired. At this point, it is worst then when we first hired him.

Fernando removed and braced a load bearing wall in my home, tiled kitchen floor, installed new drywall, repaired/textured ceiling, added recessed lighting, etc. Fernando takes pride in his work. He is professional, efficient, clean, and capable of any type of construction job. I haven't been this impressed with a contractor in a very long time and plan to use him for future projects.

Functional Conceptz (Brian and Aisha) were truly professional and have integrity running business for many years. We've shopped around, we received several estimates offers from small contractors to big bucks/chain-stores businesses, but we selected Functional Conceptz for many good reasons: They showed professionalism and understanding the project, provided prompt response, and the most important honesty. They saved us big bucks: I had already paid for the thin-set and they reminded us that we should return it since it was included in the contract, this is might not happen if honesty was not one important factor of their business performance. Their crew were on time from start to finish, working out a great job (see the photos). They moved the heavy furniture, appliances, fast, polite and they cleaned up after. Brian and Aisha at Functional Conceptz saved us money, time and returned quality at home and peace in mind. I would highly recommend them. One more thing, I checked on their business and personal background and records (I got bitten before), they are sharp clean and clear. I will call them for our next project. 360 photos: https://photos.google.com/photo/AF1QipN75uVg9xE70tjqzfBpEvaV_ScqhqG1D5PTZEVm https://photos.google.com/photo/AF1QipN4lkBjzxDtuRvVvGxNBefza6ERTG4QQfV3070n

I don’t like reviews and generally never agree to do them. I was doing a large scale job and in my own head I wanted a small company that would give me an amazing pricing and service and Opus looked like a huge business that was going be super expensive. I talked to several contractors and I really didn’t get the best feeling so I called Opus to see how these guys would approach my job. As soon as I spoke to them I knew this was a real business and I was going to be in better shape. The problem was I needed an architect, designer, permits and so on. I went to their office and they had all the guys I needed already working for them and they were GOOD! Like I thought I was going to get kids out of school or something. These guys were great. Also I found out that Opus employed their own teams they were not using sub-contractors. That made me feel pretty good. Their pricing was actually decent and amazing for the level of quality and service. They did all the small jobs that I thought they wouldn’t want. So I hired them, they didn’t want a huge deposit and were not concerned about getting 50% up front or anything like that. They were scheduled to finish on the 15th of August and they finished on the 17th and there were a few delays on my part but they kept it pretty well on schedule and the budget stayed intact. They had weekend crews to make up for the rain days when they got slowed down. The interior design team was on hand whenever I needed. The landscapers did exactly what RJ designed. Every morning it was a complete event. It was like watching a fined tuned machine run. I have neighbors who hired construction companies and warned me about using big time professionals and said I should hire their friend or something. I would only use Opus and would recommend to anyone who wanted to use them as well. Jose and Maria

Carlos was awesome. We wanted a wood panel accent wall built in the study. High quality work at a reasonable price. Not only was the work excellent, but Carlos was very courteous, respectful, and professional. He kept in contact with me, and let me know the status of the work being performed to prep the wood (with pictures), and let me know when he was on his way for the install the next day. As some of you may have experienced with some contractors, they aren't always the best communicators. Not a problem with Carlos. We are going to be having more work done to the house soon, and will be hiring Carlos to do it. He takes pride in his work, and sadly, that's becoming harder and harder to find these days.

I'm still waiting on this professional to finish the job. He had a personal matter come up taking him away from Dallas but has been unable to find someone else to finish the job for him. Half of the job has already been paid for but it's been over 2 weeks without any progress. Will change my review to 4 stars if the project is done in the next two days - otherwise I would not recommend hiring this contractor.

I highly recommend New Direction Structure Care for any and all of your home projects! I contacted Denton regarding a new tub and tile in the hall bath, and after meeting him the very next morning, he had agreed to take care of our fencing and concrete projects, too. I was thrilled to find someone willing to help with everything inside and out! If you are looking for a contractor who is quick to respond, does what he says he'll do, doesn't cut corners, arrives when he says he will, is up front with any variances from the original plan prior to making changes, and stands behind his work, then look no further! These guys are great to work with, and I plan on calling on them for all our repair and remodeling jobs. Thank you, Denton and Juan! You're the best!

Tommy and his team did a great job enclosing my porch. They installed an exterior wall and window, floated the floor, installed carpet, and put in a sliding pocket door. He was extremely timely answering questions and providing updates. He's the best contractor I've ever worked with, and I highly recommend him and his team.

Top quality job, completely professional crew, trustworthy and fairly priced. I would suggest getting bids from other contractors and then calling Raul. Not only will he give you a better price, but he will deliver. He and his crew completely transformed three different buildings for us on our horse ranch. They also worked through conditions that most people would not even consider working in.

Garage & Driveway remodel and General Construction

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

For more on where to start when remodeling a bathroom check out The Complete Thumbtack Bathroom Remodel Guide.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.
