Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

What is considered a local move vs. a long-distance move?

Local moves are among the most common moves. Unlike a long-distance move, a local move is typically less than 50 miles and does not cross state lines. Generally, a local move only takes one day, and movers tend to charge by the hour.

The definition of a long-distance move may vary depending on the moving company. Generally, a long-distance considered to be any move of 400 miles or more. However, some say a long-distance move is over 50-100 miles.

Local Move

A move under 50 miles

Long-Distance Move

A move over 50-100 miles or over 400 miles; may also be called an “interstate move” or “out-of-state move”

Out-of-State Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “interstate move” or “long-distance move”

Interstate Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “out-of-state move” or “long-distance move”

Intrastate Move

A move that begins and ends in the same state, typically beyond 50 miles

Interstate moves require additional legal preparation and will incur additional costs for distance, the amount and weight of your items, the preparation required and various other factors. Moving companies tend to do an initial weighing of the truck, which you should be present for.

A move that crosses state lines is considered an interstate move or an out-of-state move. Contrast this with an intrastate move, which begins and ends in the same state, but is typically above 50 miles.

To determine whether your move is local or long-distance, contact the best movers in your area.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

Is it cheaper to move your stuff or buy new stuff?

It often makes more financial sense to buy new stuff when you have the chance to sell furniture to offset the cost. The cost of moving your current furniture can sometimes be more than buying new things, particularly if the furniture is large or cumbersome to move. You can sell furniture online, or make a furniture donation and deduct it from your taxes (if it qualifies as a charitable contribution). Some places near you may even offer free furniture pickup when you choose to donate.

If you have valuable furniture that would be costly to replace, however, it may be cheaper to move them. To find out which option is best for you, contact professional movers in your area to receive quotes and estimates.

These guys showed up on time and worked so hard! We had a monster of a move with a small window to move and these guys delivered! Would definitely hire again for the next move!

I'm so glad I decided to hire Red Barn Movers to safely move my 43-year-old piano home. Their mission is amazing, and their team is even better! Because I have a funky address, the moving van got lost on its way to me — so those who arrived on time took the opportunity to graciously shovel and salt my driveway and walks. Everyone was super respectful and worked fiercely to get my piano safely situated (over some precarious outdoor stair situations, to boot). I hate moving, but I don't think I'll mind it so much in the future — because I'll hire Red Barn Movers again!

Had asked to move a treadmill from basement to upstairs bedroom, about a 15-minute job. However, was given an estimate of $200 for 2 movers @ $35 an hour & asked about the additional costs involved. Was told that included vehicle, fuel, moving equipment, and padding. When my movers eventually arrived, they were in a personal vehicle with no dolly or moving material. They simply picked up the treadmill & carefully placed it in the location of choice in 15 minutes with no issues. Extremely nice & professional guys, would highly recommend them to anyone. But I have a real issue with the cost model used by this company to build their estimates, especially when specific items, i.e. trucks, fuel, and pads were charged to me but were not used in this transaction at all.

The movers showed up on time, they were efficient in their loading/unloading, and they were very personable. In the end, the price was a little more than I had anticipated and $200 was a little steep considering how quickly it was moved. It was something that I was told was negotiable, but in the end I still payed full price.

I hired Sioni and his team of professionals for a last minute (next day) move. My three bedroom home had a lot of large, heavy custom made furniture collected during my career overseas in the military. Most of the furniture has very delicate finishes. Sioni's team took extreme care to cover and pad EVERYTHING so that nothing would be damaged. I am overwhelmed by how much care and attention to detail the guys displayed throughout the move. They even took extra time to insure everything was setup just right at the new location. We also have a lot of antique china and crystal stemware. NOTHING was broken...not one single glass or dish. These guys did a great job for my move. They really helped me through a stressful move. I can't imagine hiring a different mover. Best of all, the price was very fair.

The team from Just the Movers was exactly what we needed today. They worked hard to get the job done, making quick time while also treating our belongings with respect. The only thing keeping me from giving them five stars was a complication in the schedule which meant we had to wait to finish moving until later in the day. I really appreciate their help, and although we hit a snag, I don't hesitate to recommend them. Thanks guys, we'll be using you for our next move!

well the past is certainly telling of the future and I have noticed negative reviews on here just get responded to by telling the complainer they were the ones wrong. That said, I feel it's important to share my review. Not on time: my movers were two hours late and I was the one that had to call and find that out. A more productive approach on notifying the customer would have been appreciated. As I've read through many of these reviews, I've seen this complaint more than once and was told that customers can't expect movers to be on time. Rude: Kingsley was incredibly unprofessional when I expressed my concerns about the late start and slow process of moving. Our movers were frequently in the bathroom for more than 10 minutes at a time and it greatly slowed down the process. I was told that I was "unreasonable" and that they were hardworking employees. I was also threatened with slander if I posted an honest review. On top of that I was told that they had gone above and beyond to let me use their truck. However, the description clearly states a truck is included. Last minute switch: I requested two movers and was told they would send three at the last minute since they were so late and that this addition would get me done in two hours. I was happy to hear about a fast moving plan but in the end that's not what I got. I was not asked if I was ok with paying for an additional mover for 4 hours and was told I had too much stuff - it wasn't their fault. I should have questioned more at the start but I assumed a professional business would have clearly verified that the customer was ok with all the fees. No matter the situation. Our three movers were polite and moved quickly when they knew I was concerned about time in the end- for that I am grateful. I would caution any future customers to ask a lot of questions up front and to be aware your time is "a window" not a commitment.

Late to a review, but it was so memorable that I can still remember the details. He helped us move early November with only 2 or 3 days notice before the move. Kingsley was great to work with, we had a tight budget so he allowed us to assist with the loading and unloading to speed up the process. We moved our whole 2 bed 2 bath house in one truck load, he has a large truck. he quoted us that it would take about 4 hours including drive time, it actually took us little over 2 hours, and that's including the 50 minute drive from house to house. Since he moved us so quickly he charged us less than he originally quoted per hour. We gave him and his assistant a decent tip because we didn't feel right letting them leave with less than we thought it should cost. This was a great experience and if I ever move again I know where I'm going for help. Oh and they even lifted the heavy stuff without any trouble. Thanks again, Josh

Even through I went with an other agency, do to time restraint. They were very professional, friendly and replied quickly. I would consider them in future moves.
They were incredible, we are getting ready to move again and I'll definitely be calling them. I've referred them to a few people who have loved them also!

1. Provide a valid estimate. Their $50/hour statement is a lie. It's $50/hr. per individual AND apparently only to load and move. I specifically asked to be packed and moved. They arrived without boxes. Had to make two trips to get boxes. When I asked about the cost, I was told they had to wait to see how much the packing materials were. At the end of 8 hours when the truck left to go to the new house 12 miles away, I was told the cost of the move was $5,600 and that was their standard rate. So MANY lies. 2. Put numbered labels on the boxes and maintain a list of the boxes indicating what is in them. None of the boxes were marked, AT ALL. There was no way to know which boxes belonged where, so they were all put in the living room and then we had to move them to the appropriate location after we opened them and found out what was in them. 3. Use appropriate sized boxes. Other than books, all the boxes were extra large, making them difficult to deal with. Dishes belong in dish crates. Hanging clothes belong in wardrobes. 4. Don't lie to your customer!!

These guys were super awesome. I needed help very last minute to move a really heavy and bulky piece of furniture that I was buying. They were able to show up within hours. They came early, they did a great job, and I left me with a great impression. Jeffry brought his own truck which was great, and there were no extra charges for things like mileage, truck rental, etc. They were careful in my home and with my stuff. If I needed something moved again I would call them. Plus, communication was great. They responded immediately and kept in contact as I needed to schedule last minute. Great experience.

I take full responsibility for not having the iron and some dishes ready (dry) for the move. Nevertheless, I would have appreciated if the guys would have brought this fact to my attention instead of just packing the items. I noticed the discrepancy and had the items removed so they could be dried up. (There was a potential for mold growth!)

Kingsly Brown did an outstanding job. They were friendly and courteous They handled all my items with care and made sure everything was moved carefully. I was very specific about my time frame and my budget and they met it accordingly. There were no hidden costs or fees. He quoted my price up front and that was the exact pricing at the end. Very honest. I would definitely use them again.

I was extremely impressed with the friendly and respectful nature of these young men. They were prompt, worked very hard, and did not waste any time. My young sons were trying to “help,” and the guys were super kind and aware of their presence while playfully engaging with my kids. The movers were repeatedly asking if there was more they could do to help us out. The value of their work is worth much more than they charged. I highly recommend their services.
